Using two dimensional techniques studied throughout my first semester of de-sign, I created a theoretical façade addi-tion to the existing façade of the Kinkead Pavilion of the Krannert Art Museum in Champaign, Illinois. Inspired by the lines and interesting angles created through photomontages of the existing façade, I designed a glass sun-space with a web-like mullion structure that folds off of contours on the existing façade.

FAÇADE ANALYSIS AND DESIGNMUSEUM FRONTSpring 2011

After analyzing principles such as symmetry, hierarchy, rep-etition, and proportion expressed in existing building façades, I designed my own fictitious museum façade by using the same techniques.

SINGLE UNIT HOUSESpring 2011

I was most interested in the ar-rangement of public and private space when planning this single family home. The living room, the most public space, is situ-ated in the center of the house, and all other lesser public spaces, such as the kitchen and dining room, are oriented around this room. These spaces are visually linked to the living room but are physically sepa-rated from it by steps and half height walls. The private spaces, the bedroom and bath-room, are reserved to the second floor and are connected by an axial public hallway overlooking a curtain window that illumi-nates the entire house. The second floor also features a private, south facing deck with wrap around planters for gardening.

CENTRE [VIA]SQUARE LOUIS MAJORELLE, PARIS 11emeprofessor: Alejandro Lapunzina

Fall 2011Team: Allison Zuck + Juliette Zidek + Maria Sturcio

My team was given a small, un-conventionally shaped site in Paris and in-structed to create a new gallery for the Cen-tre Via, a small design center specializing in industrial design pieces and sculptures. In response to the site we created an irregu-lar folding façade composed of translucent triangular glass pieces. Asymmetrically spaced vertical wooden slats create vi-sual interest by concealing and revealing elements within the gallery. One enters through one of two openings in the folds of the façade and then follows an ascend-ing circulation path around the three story atrium and through the various exhibition spaces, terminating on an outdoor terrace.

My team worked very closely throughout the entirety of the design pro-cess. For the final presentation, I person-ally created the floor plans and the circula-tion diagram and provided feedback on the drawings produced by my partners. The final model was also a shared effort.

MUSICIAN GUEST FACILITYVERSAILLES, PARC BALBIprofessor: Jean-Brice Viaud

Spring 2012

The Musician Guest Facility is a proposed retreat facility for artists par-ticipating in the Baroque Music Festival of Versailles. It would sit on a small square plot located in the corner of the historic Balbi Gardens, now a peaceful and quite neighborhood park. To preserve the integ-rity of the garden, I designed a low unob-trusive structure that sits between the bor-dering masonry walls, with only the long glass entry façade exposed. Sliding doors on the façade open to integrate the interior lounge and reception space with the exte-rior park. Furthermore, to allow a direct connection to the park, the public spaces are positioned at the front of the building and spaces become more private as one moves further back into the facility.

MUSEUM OF ANCIENT LIFECHAMPAIGN, ILLINOISprofessor: Kevin Hinders

Fall 2012

The Museum of Ancient Life is a fictitious museum in downtown Cham-paign, Illinois. Being interested in the interaction between building and site, I created a site with sloping brick walls that would slowly reveal design elements as the viewer progressed along them. Specif-ically, as one walks alongside the building to the entrance, the sloping brick wall be-neath the glass slowly reveals the interior Tyrannosaurus Rex display. I further explored the idea of revealing elements by pulling apart por-tions of select brick walls to create a “brick weave,” where perforations in the brick would change the viewer’s experi-ence depending on his or her orientation to the wall. The façade design became an iteration of the “weave” at a larger scale with further visual interest created by varying the spaces between brick blocks depending on the programmatic elements located behind them. By using this overall technique, I created an interesting way of framing and revealing the Museum.

GLOBAL ARCHITECTURE BRIGADESRAIN MODULES

Fall 2012: Design CompetitionUIUC Chapter EntryTeam: Allison Zuck + Joey Lippe + Ghislaine Garcia

The Fall 2012 Global Architecture Brigades Design competiton challenged participants to design a rain catchment sys-tem for a primary school currently under construction in the Honduras. The design submitted by my team was chosen to be sent in for the national competition

The Rain Module is a series of wooden planter boxes that are situated be-low the overhanging roofline. Rain falls from the roof and into the modules where it is filtered first by the soil and then by geo-textile, a permeable material. Once the wa-ter is filtered it collects in a series of plastic tanks that run the length of the bottom of the modules. Pipes are connected to these tanks to then carry the filtered water to its intended use. More than just a rain-captur-ing device, the Rain Module also provides tables and seating, making it a multifunc-tional addition to the site. Slight variations in height and design throughout the length of the planters add visual interest and help to create a more aesthetically pleasing envi-ronment.
