Architectural Undergraduate Portfolio

I n t r o d u c t i o nJourney
For the past sixteen years it has been my goal to become an architect, more than a goal it has been a dream a consuming passion. I started in Jr. High with a basic interior space assignment that captured me. Long after the assignment was turned in I continued to rethink the design and space. I was in a sense bit by the bug. And since then my love for design and Architecture has only increased. The journey continued into high school and I took all the classes that I could in architecture, learning CAD and hand drawing. After High school I attended Salt Lake Community College, where I learned the basics of design and the use of BIM software. I graduated from SLCC with an associate degree of Architecture. Transferring finally to the University of Utah, where I have learned Architectural teamwork, design, and communication. I will graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture.

Pushing & Pulling the Dream
“The educational experience is about growth, and growth often repeatedly requires you to set aside your prior knowledge to consider new concepts and directions.” Harold Linton This has been true in my design at the University of Utah, where I’ve had to constantly work and rework concepts and design to grow in new directions. Design is a process that requires one to set aside old ideas and styles to learn different types of design. I wish to have my journey continue with the mentality of setting aside what has been learned to learn a new direction, and with the masters program I know I will find my design style. I know the technological aspect required to become an architect but I want to better Obtain the skills of design that I know the College of Architecture can pro-vide me. Through the last two years I have come to love the aspect of urban design and historical preservation, and would like to further delve into the details and effects that designing can have in an urban setting. Learning through Jorg and Bob that the near future will require a stronger form of architecture and one that is sensitive and attune to the public. This is why I wish to apply myself to the Graduate program at the university of Utah College of Architecture.

Bonneville MotelA proposed motel located at the bonneville salt flats in the state of Utah. Expressing the importance of the horizon, which is very prevalent in all directions. With this program I raised the living space to allow for an Uninhibited view of the horizon. I liked this project because I was able to create within a space that was solely based on the site.

Brise SoleilBrise Soleil (sun shade), doing a study with an existing storefront proposed to be a print shop. In this group project we created a shading system derived from helvetica type face document, in the creating of solid and void spaces. The sun shade is then split and pushed back to allow for public circulation to and from the store front.

Borgund Stave Church Precedent
Borgund
A historical precedent of a Christian church located in Borgund Norway. A model church that started the religious growth of Christianity within the area of Borgund. Built entirely of wood from the surrounding forests and a stone base from the rivers. The goal of this group project was to learn the importance of the historical building and to create a sectional model of the existing building. From this experience I have learned the importance of materiality, scale, and detail in design.

Bespoke Bike CollaborativeProposed site located in the Pearl District of Portland, Oregon. The goal of this project is to create a bike able site having mixed business use. The businesses that would be inhabiting the project are bike shops, cafe’, and mechanical shops. The idea with this challenge is to take the open spaces provided by the beautiful Portland parks and expressing that through a business site.

Cherry Creek Ski Lodge/resortA newly proposed ski resort located at Richmond Utah. In companionships we were to create a pro-gram and design the best project to suit the site. We Based the circulation around a parti diagram which was a representation of the vegetation in the area. From the circulation we related the solar patterns to orient the building accordingly. The Progress of this project can be seen at andersonarchitecture.tumblr.com
