I. GENERAL INFORMATION

Introduction and HistoryTheUniversity of Louisville School ofMusic offers the seriousstudentofmusicanopportunitytostudywithdistinguishedfacultyandtoparticipateinawiderangeofmusicalactivities,bothwithintheSchoolandthecommunity.Historicallyandphilosophically,theSchoolhashadaprofoundimpactontheculturallifeofLouisville.ItsfacultyandadministrationhaveprovidedmuchoftheleadershipandtalentforsuchgroupsastheLouisvilleOrchestra,theKentuckyOperaAssociation,theLouisvilleBachSociety,andtheChamberMusicSocietyofLouisville.

TheSchoolofMusic, founded in 1932,hasbeen locatedon theBelknapCampussince1980inabuildingwhichwasdesignedandbuiltspecificallyformusic.Itcontainstworecitalhalls,a15,000squarefootmusiclibrary,forty-fourteachingstudios,seventy-sixpracticerooms,sevenclassrooms,tworehearsalhalls,andthreedancestudios.

MissionTheUniversity of Louisville School ofMusic is committed toteachingmusicasanartistic,academic,andprofessionaldiscipline;tofosteringinavarietyofwaysandfordiversecommunitiesthecreation, performance, study, teaching, and therapeutic use ofmusic;andtocontributinginnovativemusicalleadershipinthecityofLouisvilleandbeyond.

Staff Laura Angermeier, Admissions Counselor Sr., oversees the

admissionsprocess andoutreachefforts for new freshmen,transfer, and international undergraduate and graduatestudentsintheSchoolofMusic.

Penny Brodie, Program Coordinator Sr.,servesasthestudents’front-linecontactasReceptionistintheDean’sOffice,servesasliaisonfortheChamberMusicSociety,andasDirectorfortheCommunityMusicProgram.

Matthew Crum, Dir. of Instructional & Music Technology,providestechnologysupportforstudents,faculty,andstafffordesktop,classroom,andlabtechnologyandsoftwareandmaintainstheSchool’swebsite.

Judith Hake, Intermittent Employee,overseesregistrationandprovidesadministrativesupportfortheDanceAcademy.

Brad Jopek, Administrative Assistant, provides administrativesupportfortheSchool’sDepartmentofAcademic&ProfessionalStudies, is responsible for preparing all concert and recitalprograms,andmaintainstheSchool’ssocialmediasites.

Deborah Kalbfleisch, Unit Business Manager Int., oversees allactivitiesrelatedtothepurchasingofgoodsandservicesfortheSchool.

Angela Keene, Facilities Coordinator Sr., oversees the useandmaintenanceof themusic facility for classes, practice,rehearsals, recitals, performance-relatedmatters, recital hallbookings,andspecialevents.

Justin Leighty, Director of Development, is responsible forfundraising for various projects and scholarships, andmaintainingexcellentrelationshipswithSchoolofMusicalumni,donors,andtheFriendsoftheSchoolofMusic.

Kaelah McMonigle, Administrative Specialist, providesadministrative support for the School’s Department ofPerformanceStudiesandbandprograms.

Jill Mullaney, Director of Finance & Administration,willprovidehigh level financial expertise to theDean and administersall payroll operations.Assists theDean in theplanning andadministrationofoperationalandpersonnelactivitiesof theSchoolandprovidesoverallmanagementoftheDean’sOffice.

John Ritz, Communications and Marketing Specialist, is responsibleforpublicizingtheSchool’sevents,managingmediarelations,andbranding.

Michelle Williams, Academic Counselor Sr.,overseesallstudentacademicmatters including advising, student records, andCommencement.

TBA, Multimedia Production & Events Manager,Responsibleforproduction andhousemanagementofmultimediaprojects,concerts and other events, including audio and/or videorecordsingsforsocialmedia,instructionalandarchivalpurposes,andoversightandmaintenanceofperformancevenuelightingandvideoequipment.

TBA, Piano Technician, is responsible for the tuning andmaintenanceoftheSchool’skeyboardinstruments.

TheadministratorsandfacultyoftheSchoolofMusicdonotassumetheresponsibilityofnotifyingstudentsconcerningtheregulationsoftheSchoolofMusic,theUniversity,orthestudent’sparticularstatuswithregardtocredits,requirements,orqualitypoints.Theyaremorethanwillingtoinformthematanytimestudentsrequesttheinformation.It istheresponsibilityofthestudentstoinformthemselvesinregardtogrades,creditrequirements,qualitypoints,andtheregulationsapplyingtostudentsintheSchoolofMusic.Anyemailcommunicationwithstudentswillbeontheiruniversityemailonly.Studentsmustberesponsibleandchecktheiruniversityemailonadailybasis.

Official Notices Studentsmustrespondtoofficialnoticesissuedonadministrativeboardsorsentbyindividualletters.Failuretocomplymayleadtosuspensionfromtheschool.

Music FeesAllSchoolofMusicmajorsarechargedaStudentMusicFeeof$175persemester,pro-ratedforpart-timestudents.Thisfeehelpstooffsetexpendituresexclusivelyrelatedtomusicmajorsincluding,butnot limited to accompanists, technologyand infrastructure,studentactivities,andstudentticketstoconcerts.Ofdirectbenefittomusic students is theaccess to four,one-hour serviceseachsemesterwithastaffpianoaccompanist,theavailabilityofhalf-hour,secondaryinstrumentappliedmusiclessonsonaspaceavailable/permissionofsecondaryandmajorteachersforfoursemesters,andfreeticketsprovidedtoLouisvilleBallet,ChamberMusicSociety,KentuckyOpera,SpeedConcertSeries,andLouisvilleOrchestraClassicsevents.

Musicminors and non-musicmajors approved to take appliedlessonswithintheSchoolofMusicwillbechargedaNon-MusicMajorAppliedLessonFee.Thefeeis$200forahalf-hourinlengthlessonand$400foraone-hourinlengthlesson.

Use of University-Owned InstrumentsMethods Class UseStudentsmayuseaUofL-ownedinstrumentforamethodsclassatnoadditionalcostwiththeprovisionthattheinstrumentissignedout to the student for temporary use and,while so provided,the student is responsible for its return in reasonably the samecondition.Missing instruments or repairs beyond reasonableexpectationshallbeassesseddirectlytothestudent’suniversityfinancialobligationaccountforthestatedvalueoftheinstrumentorcostofrepair,asrequired.

Ensemble or Secondary Applied Music UseStudentsrequestingtouseaUofL-ownedinstrumentforelectiveensembleparticipationorsecondaryappliedmusicstudymayhaveuseofaninstrumentprovidedthatsuchaninstrumentisavailableandnotrequiredforuseinamethodsclass.Instrumentsprovidedmustbecheckedout foreachsemesterofuse,withafinancialholdplacedonanystudent’saccountforthestatedvalueoftheinstrumentwhen the instrument isnot returnedor renewed foranysemester.Studentsareresponsibleforsecuringsafestorageandconditionsfortheinstrumentandwillbefurtherresponsiblefor replacementof the instrument if lost,stolen,ordamagedatreplacementcostasnotedintheinstrumentsign-outprocess.

Use for Degree-Required Applied Music StudyStudentsrequestingtouseaUofL-ownedinstrumentforrequiredappliedmusic study for their respectivedegreeprogrammayhaveuseofaninstrumenttiedtoasetfeeschedulebasedonthereplacementvalueoftheinstrument.Ifavailable,andrecommendedforusebytheappliedmusicteacher,instrumentsmaybecheckedoutforeachsemesterofuse,withafinancialholdplacedonanystudent’saccountforthestatedvalueoftheinstrumentwhentheinstrumentisnotreturnedorrenewedforanysemester.Studentsareresponsibleforsecuringsafestorageandconditionsfortheinstrument andwill be further responsible formaintaining theinstrument in playing conditionwhile in his or her possession.Studentsshallbefurtherresponsibleforcostsuptoreplacement/repair of the instrument if lost, stolen, or damaged up to thereplacementcostasnotedintheinstrumentsign-outprocess.

EffectiveFall2015,usagefeesfordegree-requiredappliedmusicstudywillbeassessedbeginningwiththestudent’ssecondsemesterofappliedstudy.

Optional Secondary Instrument Applied Music Study Assigned by the Studio TeacherStudentsrequiredtostudyasecondaryinstrumentaspartofhisorherappliedmusicstudymayrequestatnocosttheuseofaUofL-ownedinstrumentforsecondaryinstrumentstudyaspartofstudioinstructionorasrecommended/requiredbythestudioteacheriftherequestedinstrumentisavailable.Studentsareresponsiblefor

Student OrganizationsVariousprofessionalandsocialorganizationsareopentointerestedandqualifiedstudents,but freshmen intheSchoolofMusicareencouragednot topledgeanysocialorprofessionalsororityorfraternityduringtheirfirstsemesterofstudy.

Association of Student Composers (ULASC)An organization committed to support and promotemusiccompositionandprovideinformationconcerningcompetitionsandperformancevenues.

Delta OmicronAprofessionalmusicfraternity.Thechapterfocusesitsactivitiesonpromotingprofessional competencyandachievement in thefieldofmusic.Theorganizationencourageshighscholarshipandgrowthintheperformanceandappreciationofgoodmusic.Itisalsoaservicegroupfortheschool,theuniversity,andthecommunity.

MTNA Collegiate ChapterTheMTNA collegiate chapter provides a connection to thelarger established communityof long-timemusicprofessionals,a community committed to and interested in inspiring anddevelopingitsfuturemembersandthemusic-teachingprofessionasawhole.MTNAisafoundationofeducational,musical,socialandprofessionalexperienceformusicteachersthroughouttheircourseofformalstudyandtohelpopendoorsthroughprofessionalopportunitiesandcareeroptionsinthefieldofmusic.

The Music Therapy Organization at UofLTheMusicTherapyOrganizationattheUniversityofLouisvilleisopentomusictherapymajorsandothersinterestedintheuseofmusicintherapy.MTOULprovidesinformationaboutmusictherapyanditsuses,expandsopportunitiesformemberstohearfrommusictherapistsandrelatedprofessionals,andencouragesinvolvementinmusic therapyprofessional organizations and attendance atconferences.

NAFME/KMEA Student ChapterStudentsinvolvedinpursuingamusiceducationmajorareaffectedbymusiceducationactivitiesnotonlyatthelocalandstatelevels,butatthenationallevelaswell.Thebestwaytokeepintouchwiththese activities is to join theStudentMusicEducatorsNationalConference(SMENC).ForadditionalinformationabouttheSMENC,contacttheMusicEducationFaculty.

Phi Mu Alpha SinfoniaAprofessionalmusicfraternityformentoencourageandactivelypromote the highest standards of creativity, performance,education,andresearchinmusicinAmerica.ItalsoprovidesservicetotheSchoolofMusic.

Student CouncilTheStudentCouncilintheSchoolofMusicisanimportantstudentorganizationdeeplyinvolvedinrepresentingstudents’concernsandopinionstothefacultyandadministration.TheStudentCouncilalsosponsorsanumberofsocialandprofessionaleventsthroughouttheacademicyear.

III. UNIVERSITY AND SCHOOL OF MUSICACADEMIC STANDARDS AND POLICIES

Catalog YearStudentspursuinganundergraduatedegreeshallmeetthedegreerequirementsineffectatthetimeoftheirfirstadmissiontoanydegree-grantingunitoftheUniversityprovidedtheyhavenothadabreakinenrollmentoftwoormorecalendaryears.Ifastudenthas abreak in enrollmentof twoormore calendar years, thatstudentmustapplyforreadmissiontoanenrollmentunitand,ifadmitted,willbesubjecttocatalogrequirementsineffectatthetimeofreadmission.Studentsmayelecttofollowthemostrecentdegreeorprogramrequirementsestablishedsubsequenttotheirinitialentryintoadegree-grantingunit.

TheUniversityreservestherighttoissueandrequireimmediatecompliancewithnewrequirementsasmaybeneededtorespondtocertification,licensure,andaccreditationissues.Individualunitsmayhavedifferent catalogyear requirementswhich supersedethoseindicatedhere.Studentsshouldconsultthecatalogsectionfortheirspecificenrollmentunit.

Academic Standards PolicyTheUniversity of Louisville communicates its expectations forundergraduateacademicachievementthroughtheUndergraduateAcademicStandardsPolicy.Academicstandardsaredeterminedbythefacultiesoftheenrollment/degree-grantingunits.

Applicable standards forcontinuation inaparticularenrollmentunit can be based upon grade point average, course specificachievement, and in someprograms a professional/behavioralcomponent.Studentsareencouragedtoconsulttheirenrollmentunitandthecatalogforthespecificstandardsoftheirunit.

University Grade Point AverageTheUniversity of Louisville calculates aUniversityGradePointAveragewhichbecomesthestandardmeasureofperformanceandtheofficialuniversitycalculationuponwhichacademicdecisionsaremade.TheUniversityGradePointAverageisdeterminedattheundergraduate level,baseduponallundergraduatecourseworktakenattheUniversityofLouisville.Coursesnumberedbelowthe100-level(000-099)takeninthe1998FallsemesterorafterwillnotbeusedintheearnedhoursorUniversityGradePointAveragecalculation.

Enrollment StandardsEnrollment unitsmay establish gradepoint average standardsthat exceed theminimumgradepoint average requirementsoftheUniversity. School ofMusic undergraduate students are ingood standingwhen they have aminimum cumulative gradepoint averageof 2.5. Should an undergraduate student fail tomeet the requirements of their enrollment units, theymaybesubjecttoenrollmentrestrictions,courserepetitionrequirements,othercorrectiveinterventions,andultimately,dismissalfromtheirenrollmentunit.Astudentwhoisdismissedfromtheirenrollmentunitmayseekimmediatetransfertoanenrollmentunitforwhichtheircumulativegradepointaverageisacceptable.

Academic StandardsGoodstandingisdefinedasacumulativegradepointaveragenotlessthantheminimumGPAsetbythedegree-grantingunit.SchoolofMusicundergraduatestudentsareingoodstandingwhentheyhaveaminimumcumulativegradepointaverageof2.5.

1. SchoolofMusicundergraduate studentswho, after thefirst12 degree-applicable semester hours taken atUofL, have agradepoint averagebelow2.5will beplacedonAcademicWarning.Theywillbenotifiedthattheirachievementisbelowexpectationsandbestronglyencouragedtoseekassistance,butnolimitationwillbeplacedontheirregistrationforthenextterm.

2. In any semester subsequent to that described above, anundergraduatestudentwhosecumulativegradepointaveragefallsbelow2.5willbeplacedonAcademicProbationforthenextsemesterinwhichthestudentenrolls.UndergraduatestudentsonAcademicProbationarenotifiedthattheirachievementisbelowexpectations andare subject to courseand/or credit

hour limitations, and they are limited to 14 semester hourswhiletheyremainonprobation,specifiedcourseregistrationrequirements, andother intrusive advising interventions asdeemedappropriatebytheirenrollmentunit.

3. SchoolofMusicundergraduatestudentsonAcademicProbationwillhavetheirrecordsevaluatedattheendoftheprobationarysemesterwithoneofthefollowingoutcomes:

b. a studentwhose cumulativegradepoint average is stillbelow2.5,butwhoearnedasemestergradepointaverageatorabove2.5,willbemaintainedonprobation.

e. UofL studentswho are suspendedor dismissedby theSchoolofMusicunitareeligibletoapplyforadmissiontoanotherunitandmaybeadmittediftheymeetminimumadmissionstandardsofthatunit.StudentswhoapplyforadmissiontoanotherunitmaynotenrollinanySchoolofMusiccourses.

4. Readmission of suspended students is not guaranteed. Inorder to be considered for readmission, a School ofMusicstudentmustsubmitawrittenpetitiontotheAssociateDeanoftheSchoolofMusicandan“ApplicationforUndergraduateAdmission”formtotheOfficeofAdmissions.ThepetitionmustbereceivedbytheSchoolofMusicatleastonemonthpriortothefirstdayofclassesforthesemesterinwhichthestudentseeksreadmission.Thepetitionshouldaddressthestudent’sperceptionofthecausesofpoorperformance,thestepsthestudent has taken to address those causes, and a plan ofactiontoreturntogoodstanding.Studentswhoaregrantedreinstatementwillbereadmittedonprobation.

Undergraduate Dean’s ListAstudentwhocompletesinonesemestertwelveormoregradedcreditswiththegrades“A”,“B”,or“C”anda3.5semestergrade-pointaverage,withnogradesof“I,”“X,”or“U,”isnamedtotheDean’sList.Thegrade“P”hasnoeffectonthedeterminationforDean’sList.AstudentwhomeetseitherofthesestandardsinonesemesterwillbeawardedtheappropriatehonorthroughordinaryclericalproceduresintheOfficeoftheDean.

Advising and RegistrationAllSchoolofMusicundergraduate studentsareadvisedby theacademiccounselorwhoassistswithregistration,monitorsprogressin courses required for theirmajor, and reviewsprogressmadetowardcompletionofUpperDivisioncourseprerequisites.

AdvisingisrequiredforallmusicstudentsuntiltheyhavecompletedallprerequisitesforUpperDivisioncourses.(SeeUpperDivisionstatement in theSchoolofMusicunit sectionand in themusicdegreesoutlinedintheundergraduatecatalog.)Studentswillbeblockedfromregistrationforclassesuntiltheadvisingrequirementhasbeen satisfied.Registrationperiodscanbe foundonlineat:http://louisville.edu/registrar/registration-information.

Continued registration after non-payment of tuitionStudentswho have not settled tuition bills by thewithdrawaldeadlineshallbeleftonthecourserostersandshallbeallowedtocompletetheworkofthetermandwillreceiveagradeforeachcourseinwhichtheyareenrolled.Untiltheirbillsarepaid,however,theiraccesstoregistration(includingregistrationforsubsequentterms) and transcript serviceswill be blocked. Transfer Grade AcceptanceTheUniversityofLouisville recognizesappropriatecourseworkdoneatother accrediteduniversities andcolleges andacceptsthatworkaccording to theprinciples set forth in theAmericanAssociation of Collegiate Registrars andAdmissionsOfficersTransferCreditPracticesandstatelaw.

Cardinal Core (General Education) ProgramBeginninginsummer2018,allstudentswillberequiredtomeetthe requirementsof theCardinalCoreprogram. Studentswhomatriculatedtotheuniversitybeforesummer2018shouldconsultwiththeiradvisorsaboutthetransitionfromthepreviousgeneraleducationprogramtoCardinalCore.

TheCardinalCoreprogramattheUniversityofLouisvillepreparesstudentstodotheadvancedworkneededfortheirbaccalaureatedegreesandpreparesthemtocontributetosocietythroughouttheirlivesthroughtheirprofessionalworkandcivicengagement.The program emphasizes the development of key intellectualskills relevant to any careerpath:critical thinking,quantitative reasoning,effective communication, and the understanding of historical, social, and cultural diversity. Pass-Fail CoursesAnySchool ofMusic undergraduate studentwhohas achievedUpperDivisionstatusandwhoisingoodstandingmaytakeoneelectivecourseeachsemesteroutsidethemajorfieldonapass-failbasis.FormsmaybeobtainedintheDean’sOffice.AnycoursewhichistakentofulfilltheUniversity’sGeneralEducationrequirementsorany“MUS”coursetofulfilladegreerequirementmaynotbetakenonapass-failbasis.

Repetition of CoursesStudentsareallowedtorepeatacourseonlyonce,withthemostrecentgrade counting forgradepoint average calculation andtowards degree requirements. Students are advised toweighcarefullythetradeoffbetween1)possiblyimprovingtheiracademicstandingbyrepeatingacourseandearningahighergrade,and2)theinvestmentoftimeandmoneyinrepeatingcourses.

Incomplete Course WorkStudentsunabletocompletecourseworkbecauseofconditionsbeyondtheircontrolmaybegrantedthegrade“I”,whichstandsforIncomplete,sothattheworkcanbecompletedaftertheendofthesemester.Suchconditionsincludehospitalizations,deathinimmediatefamily,andprolongedsickness.Thegrade“I”maynotbeusedsolelytoextendtheavailabletimeinasemesterforstudentswhofallbehindforreasonsundertheircontrol.

Thegrade “I”maybe assigned at thediscretionof the courseinstructorifallofthefollowingconditionsaremet:

• Themajorityofthecourseworkwascompletedpriortothe endofthesemester.• Thestudentisingoodstandingtopassthecourseupon successfulcompletionoftheremainingwork.• Thefinalportionofthecourseworkcouldnotbecompleted forreasonsbeyondthestudent’scontrol.

Ifrequestedtodoso,thestudentmustsupplytheinstructorwithdocumentationoftheextenuatingcircumstances.Theinstructorisencouragedtoprovidetothestudentawrittenstatementoftheexpectationsandrequirementsforcompletingthecoursework.

The exam contains an extensive combination of scales,chords,patterns/phrasesections,andimprovisingoveraselectedlistofcommonprogressionsandstandardjazzrepertoire.Therewill be numerousopportunities each semester todemonstratethisknowledge,includingtwoJazzBarrierExamdates,juries,andeventssuchasJazzComboandJazzAreaperformances.Pleaserefertotheinstrumentspecificguidelines.

Music Therapy Barrier ExamEach studentmust create a repertoire list of at least 20 songschosenfromaprovidedlisttouseattheassessment.Theremustbeat least2 songs fromeachgenre.Studentswillbeasked tosingandaccompanyfoursongsofhis/herchoice,twousingpianoandtwousingguitarandmaybeaskedtosingandaccompanyadditionalsongsselectedbythefaculty.Studentsmayusemusic,butshouldknowthemusicwellenoughthes/hedoesnotneedtofocusonthemusicandcanmakeeyecontactwhilesingingandplaying.Studentsshouldknowandsingseveralversesofmanyofthesongs.Studentsmaybeaskedtoapplyoneofthesongstoaclinicalsituation/population.

Performance and Piano PedagogyFortheSophomoreEvaluationAppliedExamination,eachstudentmustperformelevenminutesofmusicconsistingofaminimumofthreepiecesofvaryingstyles.Ifthelengthoftheselectedworkswillnotallowthreepieces tobeheardwithin theallotted time,the student should consultwith the applied teacher to selectappropriate cuts or stopping points. If a composition has anaccompaniment, itmustbeperformedwithaccompaniment.Atleastoneofthepiecesonthejurymustbewithaccompaniment(with the exceptionof keyboard instruments,guitar, andharp).PianoperformancemajorsmusthavepassedthePianoProficiencyExambeforetheyperformtheSophomoreEvaluation.

Academic ForgivenessAcademic Forgiveness allows currently enrolled students orstudentswhoareeligibletore-enrollwithoutseekingreadmissiontorequesttheadjustmentoftheirrecordsforoneormorecontinuousentire semesters of previous collegework. If the appropriatecommitteewithinthestudents’enrollmentunitortheunitinwhichtheyseektore-enrollfindsthereareextenuatingcircumstancesthatwarrantsuchaction,thecommitteemayrulethestudentseligibleforacademicforgiveness.Thecommitteewillapprovepetitionsonlyiffutureacademicsuccessseemsplausible,withtheexpectationthat such forgiveness should typicallyhaveapositiveeffectonpersistencetowardeventualgraduation.

Forgivenesswillonlybeappliedtotherecordafterthesuccessfulcompletion of at least 12 hours after the last term forwhichforgivenessistoberequested.The12hoursshouldbeindegreeapplicablecourseswiththenecessarysemestergradepointaveragedesignatedbytheirenrollmentunit.Afterthese12hourshavebeenattempted,studentsmaypetitiontheappropriatecommitteeforacademic forgiveness, designating the semesteror consecutivesequenceofsemesterstowhichtheforgivenessprocessistoapply.If approved,all coursegradesandcredithours for the forgivensemesterswillbevoided.Studentsmaynotbegrantedacademicforgivenessmorethanonce.

AlthoughFreshStartaffectscumulativegradepointaverage,ithasnoimpactonearnedandattemptedhours.Allcoursestakenattheuniversitywillstillbeusedforfinancialaid.FinancialaidrecipientswillstillhavetoadheretotheSatisfactoryAcademicProgress(SAP)policyadministeredbytheStudentFinancialAidOffice.StudentswhoaregrantedaFreshStart arenot automatically clearedofanySAPissues.IfinterestedinsubmittingaSAPappeal,studentsshouldcontacttheStudentFinancialAidOffice.

Coursestakenundertherepeat-to-replaceoptionduringtheperiodcoveredbyaFreshStartwillnotbecountedagainstthemaximumrepeatsallowedunderuniversitypolicy.Financialaid for repeatcoursesiscalculatedaccordingtofederalregulations.

IV. MUSIC REQUIREMENTS

Attendance at Classes and LessonsStudentsareexpectedtoattendallclassesandlessons.Attendancerequirementswillbestatedinthesyllabus.Thecataloguerequiresthatallfacultykeepanattendancerecordforallclassesandlessons.Thisinformationmayberequestedincasesofstudentcomplaintsaboutgrading.

Private lessonsmissed foranycauseother than illnessmaynotbemadeup.Lessonsmissedbecauseofillnessmaybemadeupprovided the instructor isgivenduenotice.ExcessiveabsencesshouldbereportedtotheOfficeoftheDean.

ElectivesMusicelectivesinanyBachelorofMusicdegreeshouldbechosenfromcoursesinMusicHistory,MusicTheory/Composition,MusicEducation,MusicLiterature,MusicPedagogy,MusicTherapy,Jazz,a secondaryappliedarea,or anon-requiredensemble.Coursesbeyond thedegree requirement in the student’smajor appliedareaorintherequiredmajorensemble(s)arenotappropriate.FortheBachelorofArtsdegree,inadditiontotheelectiveslistedfortheBachelorofMusic,appliedmusiccoursesbeyondtherequiredfoursemestersareacceptableasmusicelectives.MUHcourseswillnotbeacceptedasmusicelectives.SchoolofMusicstudentsmaycountuptotwoone-hourPhysicalEducationcoursestowardthegeneralelectiverequirement.

Applied GradingUndergraduatemusicstudentswhofailtoreceiveagradebetween“A+”and“C-”forappliedstudymustrepeatthatlevel.Ifagradeintheaforementionedappropriaterangeisnotreceivedattheendof thenextsemester’sstudy, thestudentwillnotbeallowedtocontinuestudyintheSchoolofMusic.Exceptionstothisrulemustbebywrittennoticeoffacultyaction.Ifastudentfailstoshowfortheirappliedjuryattheendofasemester,thestudent’sjurygradewillbean“F.”Thestudent’sfinalgradeforthesemesterwillalsobean“F.”

Final Applied GradeTheapplied instructormayset theirowngradingpolicy for theappliedlesson,buttheweightofthejurygradeshouldbenolessthan30%andnomorethan50%ofthestudent’sfinalgrade.Criteriafortheappliedlessongradeduringthesemesteroftherecitalwillbedeterminedbytheappliedinstructorandstateonthesyllabus.

Applied JuriesStudents requesting credit for appliedmusic study,with theexceptionofFunctionalStudy,shallbeexaminedbyacommitteeof the facultyat theendofeachgradingperiod.ThemeansofassessmentforFunctionalStudywillbedeterminedbytheappliedfacultymemberandclearlyindicatedinthesyllabus.Arequiredrecitalofaminimumofthirtyminutesofmusicmaytaketheplaceofthejuryattheendofthesemesterinwhichtherecitalisgiven.

Jury Comment Sheets remain a permanent part of a student’s academic file. TheyshouldbereturnedtotheDean’sOfficewiththeexamJurySheets.Theywillbecopiedandreturnedtothefacultymemberinordertosharewithstudents.Literaturepresentedforexaminationmaynotberepeatedinwholeorinpartatasubsequentexamination.Anexceptionmayoccurinareasthatrequireaself-preparedworkonthe jury. Insuchcases,aself-preparedworkpresentedatajurymayberepeatedonasecondjuryiftheworkhasbeenstudiedindetailatalaterdatewiththeteacher.

For the sophomore evaluation applied examination (studentsregistered forMUS202,204,206,212, 214), each studentmustperformelevenminutesofmusicconsistingofaminimumofthreepiecesofvaryingstyles.Ifthelengthoftheselectedworkswillnotallowthreepiecestobeheardwithintheallottedtime,thestudentshouldconsultwiththeappliedteachertoselectappropriatecutsorstoppingpoints.Ifacompositionhasanaccompaniment,itmustbeperformedwithaccompaniment.Atleastoneofthepiecesonthejurymustbewithaccompaniment(withtheexceptionofkeyboardinstruments,guitar,andharp).

Transfer of Applied CreditsAsstatedelsewhereinthishandbook,theSchoolofMusicoftheUniversityofLouisvilledoesnotacceptcredits inappliedmusicthathavebeenearnedatotherinstitutions.Attheendofthefirstsemesterinresidence,however,astudentmaypetitionforadvancedstanding.

Attendance at Area MeetingsAttendanceisrequiredatallAreaMeetingsforstudentsinthearea.Theseareusuallynotweeklyevents,buthelda fewannouncedtimesduringthesemester.Non-areameetingweeksarereservedforstudiomasterclassesduringthattime.

Public PerformanceStudents are encouraged to be active in public performanceand should consult their applied teacher inpreparing for theirperformances.

Student Performance RequirementUndergraduatestudentstakingapplied lessonsfor2or4credithoursmustperformatleastoncepersemesterinapublicforumafterreceivingcreditfortheirfirstsemesterofappliedstudy.Suchperformancesmaybeof the following types: convocation, arearecital,majoroperarole,fullorhalfsolorecital,soloperformancewithamajorensemble,orotherperformancesanctionedinadvancebythestudent’sinstructor.EachperformancemustbeincludedontheRepertoryRecordFormsubmittedattheappliedexam.

Soloist OpportunitiesStudentswhoappearassoloistswiththeUniversityofLouisvilleSymphonyOrchestramust participate in theConcerto orAriaCompetitions.Thecompetitions,whichareheldonthefifthFridayof the fall semester, areopen to any full orpart-time studentsworking towardadegree.Theapplication tocompete,which isavailableintheDean’sOffice,mustbesignedbytheappliedmusicteacherandsubmittedtotheDean’sOfficebythedatestatedontheapplication.

WhenastudentischosentoappearassoloistwiththeUniversityofLouisvilleSymphonyOrchestra,thestudentmustperformthemusic offeredattheaudition.Theworkmustbepreparedin itsentiretyfortheaudition,butmemorizationisnotarequirementfortheauditionortheperformance.Thestudentmustprovideanaccompanist.

AccompanistsStudentswhohavepaidtheMusicStudentFeeortheNon-MajorAppliedLessonFeehaveaccesstoamaximumoffourservices(maximum of one hour/service) each semesterwith a pianoaccompanistsubsidizedbytheSchoolofMusic.Thefourservicesconsistoftheappliedexaminationandanycombinationofthreeservices,includingrehearsals,lessons,masterclasses,convocations(generalorarea),ortheUofLConcertoCompetition.Theservicesmaybedividedbetweenmajor/principalandsecondaryappliedstudy,aslongasthestudentdoesnotexceedatotaloffourservicespersemester(notfourservicesperinstrument).Studentsauditingapplied studymay also take advantage of the accompanyingservices,providedtheyhavepaidthesemester’sMusicStudentFee.Inasemesterwhereadegreeornon-degreestudentrecitalreplacestheappliedexamination,thestudentmaysubstituteanotherservicefortheappliedexamination.

Unusedservicesmaynotbecarriedovertoanothersemester.Forany services thatanaccompanistprovidesbeyond the four (4)subsidizedservices,aswellasfeesforrecitals,theaccompanistwillmakepaymentarrangementsdirectlywiththestudent.Astudentmustprovidetheaccompanistwithtwenty-four(24)houradvancenoticetocancelalesson,rehearsal,orperformance.Failuretodosowillmeanthatthestudentwillforfeittheservice;however,theaccompanistwillstillbepaid.Thestudentwillberesponsibleforpaymenttotheaccompanistforanymake-upservice.

Full-timestudentswho fail to register foramajorensembleeachsemesterwillbeinviolationofthecatalogandsubjectto academic action.A studentwho fails to register for theappropriate ensembleduring a semesterwill beplacedonimmediateAcademicWarning. If the student has failed toresolvetheensembleregistrationbytheendofthesemester,thestudentwillbeplacedonAcademicProbation.A student who fails to register for the appropriate ensemble in a second consecutive semester will, if the ensemble has not been added by the end of the first week of classes, be placed on immediate Academic Suspension.

2. Forallpart-timestudents,participationinaprincipalensemblemustkeeppacewiththenumberofhoursaccumulated.Foreach15hourscompleted,atleastonecredithourmustbeinensemble.

4. MusicTherapyequivalencystudentsholdingadegreeinmusic,orwith a bachelor’s degree in a different field, butwhosetranscriptsindicatethattheyhavetakeneight(8)ensembles,arenotrequiredtotakeanensemble.

5. Under no circumstances will participation in amateur,semiprofessional, or professional organizations outside theUniversitybesubstitutedfortheUniversityrequirement.

6. After achieving Upper Division status, the studentmaypetitiontohaveadifferentmajorensemblesubstitutedforthedesignatedprincipal ensemble. Thepetitionmustbemadepriortotheensembleauditionsforthesemesterduringwhichthe substitutionwill take place. If a student changes theappliedareaordegreeemphasis,thestudentmustre-auditionforscholarshipconsideration.Scholarshipstudentswillbeexpectedtoenroll forapplied lessonsontheirprincipal instrumentattheprincipalormajorlevel(ie.the101,103,105,111,or113sequence)foraminimumof2credithoursduringeachsemesterthattheyholdamusicscholarship.

Annual ReviewStudentsreceivingamusicscholarshipwillbereviewedattheendofeachsemester.Thereviewwillincluderecommendationsfromthe applied, ensemble,music theory,music history, andmajorareafacultyasapplicabletothe individualstudentdegreeplan.Databasedonprogresstowardthedegree,musicalprogress,andgeneralacademicperformancewillbeconsidered.Adjustmentstoscholarshipawardsmaybemadebasedonthisjointreviewandrecommendation.AnystudentswithIncompletegradeswillhavetheirscholarshipputonholduntiltheIncompletesareremovedandtheGPArecalculated.PLEASE NOTE: If scholarship funds have already been disbursed and your scholarship is reduced or revoked, a balance will be generated and you will be responsible for paying that money back to the University of Louisville.ViolationsofeithertheUniversityofLouisvilleCode of Student Conduct or the Code of Students Rights and Responsibilitiesmay result in either thereductionorlossofascholarship.

Undergraduate Scholarships for Current StudentsCurrentstudentswhoarepursuingamusicmajorattheUniversityofLouisvillemayrequestconsiderationforanewmusicperformancescholarshiporanincreaseintheircurrentawardbysubmittingapetitiontotheScholarshipCommittee.

StudentsshouldsubmitapetitiontotheScholarshipCommitteeno later than November 1 in a fall semester or April 1 in a spring semester.Thepetitionshouldincludealetterofrequestfromthestudentandaletterofsupportfromthestudent’sappliedteacher.Both letters should be submitted together to theAdmissionsCounselor.

Piano,percussion,drumset,harp,andorganroomsrequireakey.Storageof the following instruments also requires a key: tuba,euphonium,doublebass,reedmaking,andstringmethods.Eachkeycheckedoutrequiresa$20depositfortheacademicyear.CardinalCashistheonlyacceptableformofpaymentforthedeposit.Allkeysarerequiredtobereturnedattheendoftheacademicyearbythepostedduedate(typicallythelastdayofexams).Studentswhofail toreturnthekeysbytheposteddateswill forfeit theirdepositsandwillhaveaholdplacedontheiraccountuntilthekeyisreturned.Lostkeyswillresultintheforfeitofthedepositandwillrequireanotherdeposittoobtainanotherkey.Forsafetyandsecurityreasons,personalitemsmustnotbeleftinpracticerooms.Tomakearrangementsforpracticeorstorageroomkeys,pleaseseeAngelaKeene,FacilitiesCoordinator(Room150B).

Recital Hall UsageStudentsmay contact theBuildingManager to request recitalrehearsalspaceusenotmorethanfivedaysinadvanceandonlyforonehouratatime.Final decision concerning priority rests with the Dean’s Office.

Security SystemTheUniversity of Louisville Department of Public Safety hasinstalledanelectronicalarmsystemforsafetyandsecuritywhichwillsummonimmediateaidshouldyoubecomephysicallydisabledorfeelthreatenedbyanintruderorassailantwhileyouareinthebuilding.Emergencypushbuttonstationsareinstalledinpracticerooms, dance studios, andwomen’s restrooms throughout thebuilding.

StudentsandfacultyshouldbeawareofindividualsintheMusicBuildingwhoare unknown,whoappear not tobe students, orwhohave nobusiness in thebuilding.Do not approach them;insteadreporttheirpresenceimmediatelytotheDean’sOfficeor,ifappropriate,notifythePublicSafetyOffice(852-6111).
