A degree in physiotherapy, speech pathology or occupational therapy is more than a career, it’s an opportunity to have a profound positive impact on the lives of others.

With comprehensive hands-on practical experience in both simulated and real health care settings, you will be equipped to work in a broad range of areas. These include mental health or community health services, public or private hospitals, rehabilitation centres, sporting organisations, schools or private practice.

You’ll graduate with the knowledge and skills to empower individuals, supporting them in reaching their physical, cognitive and developmental goals; enhancing their quality of life.

What is occupational therapy

Occupational therapy uses intervention and assessment to enable people to actively and independently participate in activities they find meaningful, and those critical to daily life: parenting, work, education, socialising, leisure, and looking after themselves. A career in occupational therapy will enable you to significantly enhance quality of life for individuals, families, and communities.

What is physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is concerned with helping people recover, maintain and enhance their ability to move freely and without pain. Employing physical examination, diagnosis, prognosis, intervention, rehabilitation and education, physiotherapists help people of all ages overcome injury and disability, preserve physical condition during and after illness, and improve athletic performance. Choosing physiotherapy will lead to a wide range of rewarding career opportunities.

What is speech pathology

Speech pathology involves working with children and adults of all ages to overcome physical and developmental challenges to communication and swallowing. Speech pathologists use knowledge and skill in anatomy, neurophysiology, linguistics and

evidence-based, patient-centred care to diagnose and treat a range of speech and language problems. A career in speech pathology offers a rewarding opportunity to have a profound and lifelong positive effect on the lives of others.

Clinical placement requirements

To undertake clinical placements— a compulsory part of our allied health degrees—you must satisfy a number of requirements. These include:

• criminal history clearance

• first aid certificate (including CPR)

• immunisations and prescribed communicable infections (PCI) screening

• tuberculosis screening

• clinical placement deed poll

• student and professional registration.

For more details, visit: health.adelaide.edu.au/study-with-us/student-support/clinical-placements

Inherent requirements

Inherent requirements are the fundamental parts of a degree that must be met by all students. They are the abilities, knowledge and skills you’ll need to complete the degree. If you have a disability or chronic health condition, of course, reasonable adjustments can be made to help you meet the requirements. But this must not compromise academic integrity.

For more details, visit: health.adelaide.edu.au/study-with-us/allied-health

Time dedicated to study

Our allied health degrees are not available for part-time study. As a full-time student you can expect to spend about 30 to 38 hours (Monday to Friday) on campus each week, engaged in: classes, simulated learning activities, clinical instruction, small-group discovery sessions, tutorials and learning laboratories.

Clinical courses may require out-of-hours involvement, and some courses require off-campus placements.

The Adelaide Nursing School is ranked first in South Australia for graduate employment and third in Australia for overall educational experience*.

What will you do?

Our Bachelor of Nursing supports you in becoming a confident and responsible registered nurse. You will:

• develop hands-on skills in high-tech simulation settings

• benefit from clinical and non-clinical placements across metropolitan and rural locations

• explore contemporary issues around health promotion, maintenance, advocacy and care

• undertake interprofessional learning with other health care students.

Where could it take you?

You’ll emerge with a professional qualification recognised Australia-wide, ready to pursue rewarding roles in rural communities, operating theatres, emergency wards, and a multitude of other health care environments.
