SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS LUNCHEON WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 18 | 12 PM CENTRAL CAROLINA COMMUNITY COLLEGE | SANFORD, NC SPOTLIGHT ON CAR CLUBS THE AUTOMOTIVE RESTORATION CLUB OF SUN CITY WEST, AZ First-time grant awardee Central Carolina Community College (CCCC) is hosting a luncheon on Wednesday, November 18th at the school – located at 1105 Kelly Drive, Sanford, NC 27330 (ww- w.cccc.edu) near the heart of NASCAR – acknowledging and honoring scholarship recipients, including the 6 Automotive Restoration students who received HEP scholarships, based on need and merit. e college, which offers an Associates diploma and certificate in Automotive Restoration Technology, offers the only program of its kind on the East Coast – south of Washington, DC – and attracts students from around the United States. CCCC learned of the Hagerty Education Program at America’s Car Museum (HEP) through a student of the program, Joseph Gambaccini, who reached out to HEP after finding us online, inquiring about funding. Joe connected the CCCC’s Development Department with HEP, who worked closely in developing their grant application for the scholarships. Joe won one of the scholarships and will be seated at the HEP table on November 18th! Join us… HEP made a good friend in January when we spent 10-days in Arizona during Car Week. During our visit, we learned that automotive resto- ration is alive and well in the Phoenix, AZ area, largely because car enthusiast and networking- magician Herb Clark is doing everything he can to utilize the profound knowledge and skill sets of his neighbors, complement the goals of the local high schools and community colleges and take advantage of the goodwill of the area’s restoration shops. He and Tom Jones founded e Automotive Restoration Club of Sun City West (ARCSCW) after learning of the educational needs of the commu- nity. eir outreach was immediate and the results overwhelming. In fact, after a short fundraising campaign to raise capital funding for a new building, they broke ground in March on an automotive resto- ration facility in the heart of their town! e facility will house each of the different restoration shops that dot a 5 miles radius, consolidating the club’s many shops. e club is especially proud of their fabrication shop but they do every aspect of restoration, from mechanicals to uphol- stery to preservation. eir shop will be open to local high schools and community colleges, filling curricular gaps with classes taught by former Detroit designers, mechanics and technicians. “e wealth of knowledge we have in our club is astounding,” Herb reports about the 300 members. “e relationships we are culti- vating with the schools in supporting their curriculum are the wave of the future of education. On top of that, we’re support- ing the movement to teach the next generation of craftsmen and artisans so we can be sure our heritage is in good hands.” e grand opening of ARCSCW’s Restoration Shop is scheduled for January 2016 and HEP will be there. Editor’s Note: In January, Herb and Tom planned 2-days of meetings for HEP to explore that area’s schools and restoration shops, meet with club members and visit their garages plus meet with teachers and students. Since January, we continue to be engaged with teachers and students. WHAT WE DO�e Hagerty Education Program at America’s Car Museum (HEP) raises money to give it away, paving the pathway to careers. We are engaged in a movement to preserve the skills and knowledge of today’s craftsmen, things needed by the next generation as stewards of our automotive and marine heritage. HEP funds post-high school educational programs, scholarships and paid internships and apprenticeships in automotive restoration & preservation. Founded in 2005 by Hagerty and formerly known as �e Collectors Foundation, HEP supports hands-on, career-based education in communities throughout the United States and Canada while promoting automotive history and the interests of the collector community. HEP has awarded more than $2.75 million in 28 States and 3 Provinces since its founding.
