It was hard manual work with everyone on the farm involved, gathering in the cut grass and loading it with pitchforks onto the horse-drawn wagon. Today, although they are still long working days, The Cox family harvesting in the 1930s it’s all about machinery and how to use it to your best advantage. The trusty horse and cart have been replaced by the tractor with the necessary attachments to do each job as efficiently as possible. A farmer still has to make the same decisions on when to cut and when to gather in the harvest but there are less people involved and you need more skills to maintain, repair and operate the farm apparatus. I think we all hark back to what seems to be those more romantic times when life moved more slowly and everyone enjoyed the fun of helping to bring in the harvest and it wasn’t just one person stuck in a tractor cab all day! Sales last month were poor at a mere £296. However the autumn/winter catalogue is now with us which includes cards and other items for Christmas. One of particular interest is The Real Advent Calendar. We have grown familiar with The Real Easter Eggs which include information about the real meaning of Easter. Now for the first time we have something similar for Advent which not only contains fair trade chocolates, but also tells us what Christmas is really about. For every calendar sold 10p will be donated to the Children's Society.Other items to look out for in the new catalogue include the stocking fillers on p42, the olive wood carvings from Palestine on p16 and p52, and the beautiful tops and scarves from India (p24, 29, 30 and 35-37). Angels are always popular (p17/18) as are the numerous nativity sets. Please make a note now of the two Traidcraft Coffee Mornings at All Saints' Church, Bakewell on Oct 12th and Nov 9th,10.30 - 12noon, when you can view all the cards on offer and either buy them at the time or place an order. Old Harrow InnHaving put together a book about the White Lion (which can be seen at the pub), I am now trying to do the same for the Old Harrow Inn which used to be next door, for the present owners of Harrow House. Does anyone have old or not-so-old photos of the pub/house, or even old postcards with the building in the background? Fingers crossed.Angela Robinson 640245

Local Triathlete raises over £700 for Cancer Research.

An update of my Iron distance triathlon in aid of Cancer Research UK by Simeon Benson. In the June edition I introduced my attempt at the Outlaw triathlon, a 2.4 mile swim followed by 112 miles on my bike and finished off with a full marathon. I hoped to complete this in around 12 hours and raise as much money and awareness for Cancer Research as I could. On Sunday the 7th of July I lined up at 6 in the morning with about 1000 other hopefuls and started my challenge. The swim and bike went well but the run was really hard; the 28 degree heat really slowed me down but I still managed an overall time of 12 hours and 15 minutes. I was really pleased with my time despite clocking my slowest ever marathon and I’ve got plans to compete again next year!People have been very generous and I’ve raised over £700 so far for Cancer Research. If you haven’t already donated and would like to please visit www.justgiving.com/simbenson If it is easier I can take cash or cheque donations and forward them on myself, I live at the Vicarage in Great Longstone. My dad Fr. Chris Benson can also collect them.Thank you very much for your kind support. Simeon

Longstone Local History Group Annual Outing 21st September 2013

Our outing this year is Potteries-bound - a unique combination of sites, showing us what our Staffordshire neighbours were famous for. First to the Gladstone Pottery Museum in Stoke-on-Trent, the last complete Victorian pottery factory in the country to survive. Coffee, lunch, and time to find out how bone china was made, and fired in giant bottle kilns - now architectural wonders to stand within - then on to Cheddleton Flint Mill, where our high-quality Derbyshire chert, used in grinding the flint, was found by Wedgwood to produce a revolutionary white body to pottery ware. Here the water mills are still in working order, and there is a sense of contact with lives of not so long ago in a traditional family industry. So please book by 31st Aug with Tony Byrne at Hawthorne Cottage, Main Street; tel.640232 with a deposit of £10 (cheques payable to A J Byrne.) - total cost will be £26 each, including coach, coffee, lunch and museum entry. As usual the coach will leave at 8.45am from the Longstone bus shelter, returning by 6.30.

News from “rocking the BOAT”

We anticipate that the Peak District National Park Authority will soon be announcing a public consultation regarding a proposal to prohibit trail bikes, 4x4’s and quad bikes from using Leys Lane. Leys Lane is the official name for the section of the lane between Dale Farm and the “picnic site” (which is also known as Scratta Gate). On the map Leys Lane is marked xxxxx . “rocking the BOAT” supports this proposal as this section of the route is the narrowest and the most dangerous for other users of the lane. Please do not write or email yet as the consultation process has not begun. We will circulate round the village and nearby areas with all information as soon as we know when the consultation begins.Joyce Poulter for “rocking the BOAT” (map below)

Great Longstone Art show 2013This year’s Art Show was very successful even though we had fewer artists exhibiting with over £2,500 worth of sales and 25% commission for the village hall funds. All the money from teas, entrance and artist registration fees will go towards the upkeep of the hall, a registered charity. We are very grateful to the school for allowing us to use the hall over the weekend. So many people are involved with helping make the show a success – putting the exhibition boards up and taking them down is hard work, then there are all the stewards and tea helpers and cake bakers and of course the artists – thank you so much to everyone who gave their time so generously. My Friends,The Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability in Putney, London, has changed its name. It used to be called The Royal Hospital and Home for Incurables. You may understand why they changed it although others may think it an example of political correctness. Political correctness was a pejorative term used by the conservative right in America in the late 1980s to describe an attempt to avoid anything which may conceivably be constructed as discriminatory or prejudiced even if it means changing familiar words or established names. In certain parts of the British press nothing is seen as worse than political correctness and cases are quoted (not always accurately) to show the more extreme examples. Our use of language does, of course, change. Not only expressions – who would now describe something as ‘spiffing’? – but also the values that lie behind what we say. I recently re-read The Thirty-nine Steps by John Buchan. This was published in 1915 and like many other books of that period contains what we would now describe as racist views. At the time few if anyone questioned such views: they were established opinions and part of the culture. But times have changed and what once was thought acceptable is no longer. It would be difficult to edit The Thirty-nine Steps and perhaps we would not wish to do so, but elsewhere editing is possible. An example is Mrs Alexander’s hymn All Things Bright and Beautiful, which in the 1861 version of Hymns Ancient and Modern contained the verse:The rich man in his castle,The poor man at his gate,God made them high and lowly,And ordered their estate. That verse was excluded from the hymn in 1950 because by then society had changed. Not only did it fail to reflect current views of social mobility,

it presented a view of how things are, which seemed wrong. The editor of the revised version of Hymns Ancient and Modern cut it out. This was done because language and the expressions we use not only reflect values they help establish them.In this respect think of how attitudes have changed towards people with disabilities. Fifty years ago those with cerebral palsy were called spastics; cripples were those who, for example, had had polio as a child. Both terms were also widely used as in a derogatory way and people with such disabilities were regarded as having little to offer. A change in attitude came as the use of terms like spastic or cripple was seen as unacceptable. Just altering words will not make discrimination or prejudice disappear but, at the same time, it is very hard to achieve equality when the language we use continues to reflect the values that need to change. Those who claim it is all a matter of political correctness are rarely themselves the victims of such discrimination or prejudice, but if they are then they are affronted by the rudeness such language reveals. I remember one man who was adamant that sexist language was just a bit of fun and caused no offence. However, when his employer suggested that, having reached the age of seventy, he was too old for his job he became infuriated and accused him of ageism! In the end courtesy and empathy are sometimes the best guides, and the imagination to realise that words actually do matter because sometimes they hurt far more than sticks or stones.Yours sincerely,Fr. Christopher Benson

Notes from St. GilesHow quickly the year seems to be passing. By the time you receive this copy of UTE it will be August Bank Holiday weekend and most people will have completed their holiday breaks.Mums and Dads will be frantically finishing preparations for the new school year, getting the last bits of uniform together for the new term.I hope everyone is looking forward to starting back at school, especially those beginning full-time in reception, after attending Pre-school and the older ones as they adjust to High School.May all of you awaiting exam results be pleased with the outcome and settle down to higher attainment in the

future. Do try and visit the Wardlow ‘Gingerbread Festival’, Saturday 31st August to Monday 2nd September, open from 11:00am to 4:30pm for the usual delicious refreshments. there will also be a service on Sunday 8th September at 7:00pm at the Church of the Good Shepherd including FavouriteHymns. If you have any requests please let us know quickly! We are supporting the Buxton Food bank week by week for those having difficulty supplying sufficient for their families, non-perishable foods are needed and any donations will be received with grateful thanks on Sundays at church. There are a few interesting events to look forward to in the village. The 2013 Horticultural Show is at the Village Hall on Saturday 31st august, Longstone Fell race on Friday September 6th, and Longstone Local History Group Annual Outing on Saturday 21st September. There is always something happening in the village so we cannot complain about getting bored. This is the start of a very busy term for everyone. The schools will soon be preparing special shows for the end of term; we have the Harvest Festivals to celebrate throughout the benefice, which are another wonderful way of showing God’s Bounty, giving thanks for a good crop for farmers and ‘all things bright and beautiful’.I am sure there is something happening that will be of interest to us.News has filtered through to me that there have been some very encouraging results from ‘A’ level exams. Congratulations to all you hard working lasses and lads who have managed to gain top results. Well Done!Lets’ hope the ‘O’ Level results are as encouraging for those still waiting.Take Care everyonePam Smith
