"andela would spend the ne2t +9 years in prison. !is prison sentence brought

international visibility to the anti8apartheid movement. !e was finally released through

:nce released from prison, elson continued his campaign to end apartheid.

Apartheid was a system of racial segregation in South Africa enforced through

legislation by the ational Party governments, the ruling party from $&5% to $&&5,

under which the rights, associations, and movements of the ma;ority black inhabitants were curtailed and Afrikaner minority rule was maintained. !is hard work and life long

here are so many reasons why I admire this man. !aving gotten old with a collection of

#ohn 6risham novels, I am smitten over people in the legal profession. It is one of the

most, in fact, the most prestigious professions in the world. It is never easy to become a

lawyer. his and other facts make him really a good read<

come and find a sympathetic ear and a competent ally, a place where they would not be

!aving a dependable and reliable litigant is a dream of any colored race. 3ntil now, even

with the abolition of the apartheid, racial discrimination is still rampant even to a

predominantly black country as outh Africa. he emergence of "andela and ambo,

his best friend, colored people instantly found hope. A lot of them are human rights

victims yet they never caught a glimpse of ;ustice until "andela.

-ven nowadays, cinema often produced films which show the worldwide discriminationagainst colored men. he olor 6urple by pielberg, among his many movies about the

discrimination was slavery at its peak1 maltreatment and torture was the trend. It is

often a dream for colored actors to be cast in movies alongside white men. "andela

fought hard to erase that.

Mandela ,a) a 'a)ter of di).ui)e and a .eniu) at e%adin. arre)t- !e

was dubbed the ?lack Pimpernel for his legendary ability to escape capture. !e

fre>uently disguised himself as a fieldworker, a chauffeur, or a chef. In fact, he was

dressed in a chauffeur7s outfit when he was finally arrested. In $&@+, "andela was finally

apprehended while driving with fellow activist 0ecil 4illiams. In his biography,

he wrote< =At 0edara, a small town ;ust past !owick, I noticed a /ord 8% filled with

It was really cool to think of "andela in disguise. I guess people who elude arrest

become masters of disguises. ?ut we have to remember that "andela, being colored, is

Cdesigned’ to stick outDstand out among the crowd. It would be a sight to find him in any

disguise he could devise.

A courtroo' )peech a(out (ein. read/ to die helped )a%e hi) life.

"andela7s speech during his trial received international attention and was published

as  m 6repared to 4ie. Ironically, e2pressing a willingness to be e2ecuted helped spare

him that fate, and "andela was sentenced to life in prison.

0e had a chance to .et out of pri)on 1 and declined$ on principle-  In $&%E

outh African President P.4. ?otha offered "andela his freedom if he would agree to

Indeed, it was ironic that a desire to be e2ecuted would save his life. he outh African

government probably found it ridiculous and surprisingly challenging that a prisoner in

the death row would actually be ready to die than fear it, that they decided to give back

his life and a chance to live it. !e was even offered freedom which he refused knowing

full well that the renunciation of an armed struggle would show the world that the

apartheid won. !e could not afford that.

failure to address the situation in his country. It was a good thing he did, to treat AI*

as a regular disease that needs an immediate cure rather than condemning people

afflicted with it. It will never do good to point a finger at an AI* victim and make him

A very subtle and undiscoverable way of communicating with people, that’s what

I find elson "andela a positive, Gfor betterL type of leader. !e may have started a

seemingly armed yet peaceful struggle in early outh Africa yet he championed the

causes of the anti8apartheid. Although there was tremendous ine>uality brought by

racial discrimination, his battle was rewarding. !e was a picture of triumph of peace

"andela was the highest e2ample of democratic leadership in social movements in this

country. !is values were solidarity, e>uality, respect, tolerance, peace and friendship,
