MISSIONFounded in 1946 by Fisk University alumnus James E. Stamps, the mission of the National Alumni Council (NAC) of UNCF is to support, promote, influence and strengthen historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). The foundation of NAC’s mission is a commitment to work with UNCF to ensure its network of member institutions are a respected model of best practices in moving students to and through college.

GOALSIn support of UNCF and its mission the NAC will:· Increase individual contributors and contributions from alumni to their alma maters.· Increase individual contributions to UNCF.· Maintain a strong communications network between alumni of UNCF-member

schools.· Disseminate information of vital importance to the life and well-being of HBCUs.· Provide volunteer assistance to local UNCF campaigns through inter-alumni

councils and pre-alumni councils.· Inform the general public, prospective students and funding sources of the

value of HBCU alumni to civic improvement and community progress.· Encourage recent graduates to become active members of their respective

alumni associations.· Develop and pursue other goals relevant to strengthening and expanding the

contributions of HBCUs and HBCU alumni.

The NAC serves as the umbrella organization for UNCF Inter-Alumni-Councils, the UNCF National Pre-Alumni Council and national alumni associations. Other organizations also subscribe to UNCF’s mission as at-large members.

THE CONSTITUENT GROUPS NATIONAL PRE-ALUMNI COUNCILThe National Pre-Alumni Council (NPAC) serves as the umbrella organization and governing body for each Pre-Alumni Council (PAC) on UNCF-member college campuses. The NPAC, the student component of the National Alumni Council, was founded in 1958 by Dr. Walter Washington, an alumnus of Tougaloo College. He felt that it was imperative for students to under-

stand and learn early their responsibilities as alumni of historically black colleges and universities (HBCU).

The NPAC provides leadership for PAC students who are elected to serve on the NPAC Board. The PAC encourages student participation in alumni activities prior to and after graduation. Also, the PACs raise funds for UNCF.

The purposes of the PACs shall be to stimulate the interest and participation of the students enrolled at UNCF-member institutions in order to preserve and to crreate further loyalty and fellowship between the colleges and universities, their faculty, staff, students and alumni. Students enrolled at any UNCF-member college or university are encouraged to be a member of their respective PAC.

INTER-ALUMNI COUNCILS (IAC)Serve as the umbrella organization for all local UNCF alumni chapters located throughout the United States. IACs work in collaboration with local UNCF offices to raise funds for UNCF, its member colleges and universities and their students. The IACs primarily assist local UNCF offices in raising funds by conducting fundraisers, participating in workplace campaigns and faith-based initiatives. The NAC has developed a membership strategy that focuses on chartering new IAC locations. The increase of new IACs will further assist the NAC in raising additional funds for UNCF and expand the NAC’s market and ability to network with alumni, friends and supporters across the country.

NAC PROGRAM INITIATIVESSTUDENT LEADERSHIP PROGRAMIn conjunction with the NPAC, the NAC has developed Project STAY (Students Transitioning To Alumni Every Year) to build a cadre of student leaders who can seamlessly go from students to active alumni with their respective national alumni association and within any constituent group of the NAC.

ANNUAL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCEThe conference is an annual gathering of alumni and pre-alumni for the purposes of training, conducting business and acknowledging exemplary alumni, leaders and projects. The conference provides alumni and pre-alumni an opportunity to network and fellowship.

COLLABORATIVE FUNDRAISING EVENTSThe NAC is in an ideal position to facilitate fundraising activities involving its constituent groups that will be profitable and engage a large group of alumni and UNCF supporters. A cruise is one example of our national fundraising projects.

NAC ENDOWED AND GENERAL SCHOLARSHIPNAC members contribute monies to fund both scholarships to deserving students.

UNCF (United Negro College Fund) is the nation’s largest and most effective minority education organization.UNCF lives up to the ideal expressed in its universally recognized motto—A mind is a terrible thing to waste®—by enabling more than 60,000 students each year to attend college and get the education they need to launch their careers and contribute to their communities. More than 430,000 students have received college degrees thanks to help from UNCF.

UNCF helps increase minority degree attainment by:• Administering more than 400 scholarship and internship

programs, so students from low- and moderate-income families can afford college tuition, books and room and board;• Providing operating funds for its 37 member colleges,

making it possible for them to offer their students 21st century academic programs in a small-college environment and still keep their average tuition to less than half the average of other private colleges;• Servingasanationaladvocate for the importanceofminority

education by representing the public policy interests of its students and member colleges in Washington; in newspapers and on radio, TV and the Web; and through the annual national broadcast of UNCF An Evening of Stars®, the UNCF annual televised celebration of excellence in education and entertainment.

Although the historically black colleges and universities that belong to UNCF offer students the small-college experience, they have made major contributions to the communities in which their graduates live and raise their families and to the nation as a whole.

UNCF Schools Dominate U.S. News & World Report RankingsU.S. News & World Report annually publishes a national ranking of black colleges and universities. UNCF-member colleges occupy seven of the top 10 places in U.S. News’ 2012 “America’s Best Black Colleges.”
