Our Student Focus
The UNC Summer Bridge program welcomes applications from all students. However, we
focus on those students who:
Can best benefit from early exposure to the Carolina curriculum and campus community
Come from rural areas of the state of North Carolina
Represent small high schools that may lack a college prep curriculum .
Are often first-generation college students
Academics
Academic skills enhancement is part of the core mission of the UNC Summer Bridge
program. This is accomplished over the course of six weeks by the following:
Offering an English composition course designed to strengthen writing skills and
reading comprehension, along with critical thinking and analysis.
Enrollment in a quantitative skills course such as college algebra and trigonometry.
Students with appropriate math placement have the option of enrolling in chemistry in
place of a math course.
Study Skills
The program aims to develop and foster positive study habits and behaviors to ensure
continued academic success and achievement by:
Designating a structured study-time each day, which is facilitated by tutors/counselors
who are academically successful UNC upperclass students.
Academic Advising
During the summer and throughout the academic year, Summer Bridge participants receive
one-on-one academic advising.
The program director serves as the primary adviser for participants
Participants are required to have at least one advising session during the summer, as
well as, sessions during the academic year
Campus Connections and Engagement
The Summer Bridge program seeks to increase the community of participants by assisting
with developing campus connections and engagement.
Student staff reside in the dorm and are closely connected to the Summer Bridge student
experience. Staff members serve as role models and also lead group activities outside
the classroom
Participants are connected to various campus resources through scheduled visitations
with offices such as the Learning Center, Writing Center and Career Services
Participants are offered school visits which includes but is not limited to the UNC
Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Education, Journalism, Law, Nursing, Government and
the Allied Health Science programs.
