UNBLEMISH Congratulations, another zit bites the dust! Official cause of death: correctly applied medicine to the specific area. All is fine until another one pops up… and it will. While the urge to purge zits is natural, it must be avoided. The impatient, “home-grown” treatments for blemishes and blackheads have permanent side effects; scars result from prods, picks and squeezes. Uneven pressure from all these techniques pushes debris deeper, all but guaranteeing future full-blown pimples and/or scars. Did you know that the acne forms under your skin two to three weeks before it surfaces? Using spot treatments for acne makes as much sense as only brushing one cavity-filled tooth while ignoring the rest of your mouth.

HOW IS ACNE FORMED?

1. Oil production: Hormones stimulate sebaceous glands to increase oil production

2. Plugged pore: Dead skin cells mix with sticky oils to form a plug in the pore, just like a cork in a bottle. Oil builds up behind the plug.

3. P. acnes bacteria: In this perfect airtight breeding ground, the bacteria feed and breed releasing toxins.

4. Inflammation: The body responds to the toxins causing inflammation – a red tender bump appears.

WHAT WILL HELP CONTROL ACNE?

No single medicine, including spot treatment, can ever reverse complex problems. Since every pore on your face has pimple potential, Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields believe treating on a microscopic level is the most powerful. This is done by combining medicines to attack the entire process responsible for problems. A daily ritual of safe, proven medications used on the entire face is the only scientifically logical way to manage skin conditions. This is assurance for healthy, clear skin. This combination treatment is represented by the Multi-Med Therapy in the Rodan + Fields UNBLEMISH Regimen.

The discovery of a full-face treatment regimen resulted in Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields’ prestigious Executive

Cosmetic Women’s Award in 2003 for changing the direction of the industry.

WHAT DOES RODAN + FIELDS OFFER TO ADDRESS ACNE, BLEMISHES, AND BREAKOUTS? Used daily, the UNBLEMISH Regimen (pictured below) is engineered to give you clear, calm, and balanced skin. UNBLEMISH also helps to prevent pimples, blackheads, red spots and dark marks from making unwelcome appearances.

HOW TO HANDLE AN EMERGENCY BLEMISH Place ice wrapped in a paper towel on the blemish for one minute. Apply 1% hydrocortisone cream to reduce the inflammation. (Suggested product: SOOTHE As Needed Lotion with

Hydrocortisone) Or dot UNBLEMISH Benzoyl Peroxide Acne Treatment Lotion on the breakout 2-3 times a day. Lightly apply a makeup that closely matches your skin. Gently pat a matching concealer on the affected area with your finger, making sure to feather off the edges.

If you identify a deep, hard cyst developing, and time permits, a cortisone shot is an option. Request that your dermatologist use a low dose to prevent trauma to the skin’s connective tissue.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR MEN: Step 1: UNBLEMISH Acne Treatment Sulfur Wash Wet skin with lukewarm water. Using fingertips, gently massage a dime-sized amount evenly over entire face for 30-60 seconds, avoiding the eye area. The wash also doubles as a medicated shaving lotion. After shaving, rinse thoroughly and pat dry. If you use an electric razor, thoroughly rinse off the UNBLEMISH Acne Treatment Sulfur Wash, pat your skin dry and shave as usual. Step 2: UNBLEMISH Clarifying Toner Apply evenly to entire face with a fresh gauze pad, avoiding the eye area. Allow to dry without rinsing off. Step 3: UNBLEMISH Benzoyl Peroxide Acne Treatment Lotion Apply a dime-sized amount evenly over entire face, avoiding eye area. Do not rinse off.

TIPS For daily sun protection apply a quarter-sized amount of ESSENTIALS UVA/UVB SP3 30 Sunscreen to the entire face after the UNBLEMISH Benzoyl Peroxide Acne Treatment Lotion has dried down. Reapply every 2-3 hours when exposed to the sun. Avoid the eye area.

Constant friction on the skin from a helmet, cap, backpack or even a phone, when mixed with heat and sweat, can trigger acne mechanica (a form of acne caused by pressure or friction). Keep the chaffing to a minimum and the area clear by using the UNBLEMISH Regimen.

Minimize shaving irritation by changing your shaving blade after each use. Never leave your razor sitting in a moist shower as it encourages the growth of bacteria, yeast and fungus. To reduce ingrown hairs and assist in getting a closer shave, substitute Rodan + Fields ENHANCEMENTS Micro-Dermabrasion Paste for the UNBLEMISH Acne Treatment Sulfur Wash 2-3 times per week. Allow the granules to do the work – Don’t use extra pressure. Rinse off, pat dry and shave as usual. Remember to apply sunscreen to your ears, the back of your neck and scalp.

FROM THE DOCTORS’ OFFICE

“I’M TOO OLD FOR ACNE” BY DR. KATHY FIELDS, CO-FOUNDER OF RODAN+FIELDS Dr. Rodan and I have been in practice for over twenty years. In the early days, the dermatology texts stated that only 3% of adult women have acne. Dr. Rodan pointed out that either this 3% live entirely in San Francisco and are clients of ours, or the book is wrong. As we paid more attention, we identified a large group of women ages 25-55 who had some form of acne. They usually broke out on the chin and jaw line. Only they did not call it acne: it was a "stress bump" or "period bump," but not that teenage four-letter-word called acne. They self-treated with 10% burn-it-off-your-face Benzoyl Peroxide, then softened the burn with some pretty moisturizing cream.

As dermatologists, we watched these adults struggle with mild, moderate and severe acne. We found that all degrees of acne, even mild acne or occasional monthly blemishes need consistent use with a targeted solution of the right medicines in the right order. Rodan + Fields UNBLEMISH Regimen with Multi-Med Therapy will treat and help prevent acne from returning. Today we are approaching all of daily skin annoyances with a treat and prevent tactic. We are unique with this philosophy and are seeing amazing, life-changing results!

THE AGONY OF ACNE BY DR. KATHY FIELDS, CO-FOUNDER OF RODAN+FIELDS

Acne is a four-letter-word. At its mildest, it is an annoyance. At its worst, it wrecks self esteem, confidence, and can

ruin a life.

Recently I was sitting next to a woman at a baseball game. We started chatting and soon got to the topic of kids.

Suddenly her tone changed and she exclaimed, “I hate my 15 year old son!" Since my own child turned 13, I asked,

“Why?" wondering if this could ever happen to my angel. She said he had become sullen and moody."He never looks you

in the eye and always lashes out and hides in his room on the computer.” I asked if he had acne. She said, "Oh yes and

it’s bad! So on top of everything, he looks lousy.” I said, “Appearance is the foundation for everything else. At his age

he is being evaluated by peers by his looks. Acne has the stigma of being caused by dirt or food or something he is

doing wrong. All of that is just not true! It's due to hormones. It hurts to be judged like that. I would run to my room and

hate the world too.” I later sent him UNBLEMISH with instructions, and the transformation was remarkable. His skin

cleared and his self esteem and confidence soared. His relationship with his parents also improved.

My message to parents is that before you judge your teenager, find out what's really hurting their self worth. I bet you'll

find that it is something you can repair.
