“The Impact of Migration on Families Around the World”

Events organized by the Universal Peace Federation chapters in cooperation with the United Nations and other organizations

A symposium was convened at the UN headquarters in New York to discuss the challenges faced by migrant and non-migrant families.

UPF Secretary General Taj Hamad reads the message for the International Day of Families from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.


“While migration brings prosperity, it causes grief and separation particularly damaging to children,” said H.E. Abdalmahmood Mohamad of the Permanent Mission of Sudan.


H.E. Miss Alya Ahmed S. Al-Thani from the Permanent Mission of Qatar described the work of the Doha Institute on the Family and other national initiatives.


H.E. Gyan Chandra Acharya of the Permanent Mission of Nepal said that migration weakens inter-generational solidarity and the relationship between children and parents.


Sharon Slater of Family Watch International called on the UN to cease anti-family educational agendas that are inhibiting the achievement of the MDGs and other goals.


Ms. Renate Kaczmarska, Acting Focal Point of the United Nations Programme on the Family, talked about creative ways family members can keep in contact.


In small groups, participants discussed the challenges migration places on families and the ways the UN and NGOs can be more supportive of families.
