Travelling by taxiWherever possible, have a trusted adult with your child in a taxi. If they must travel alone, tell them not to get into a taxi if they suspect that the driver or passengers have been drinking or if they feel uncomfortable.

Get a Child Identity KitChild Identity Kits are a community initiative by Missing Persons South Africa and the SAPS.

The Identity Kit is a document containing your child’s personal information and a recent colour photograph which can be used to help locate children if they go missing. Be alertKnow where your children are at all times. Make sure they ask for your permission before leaving the house. Know where they’re going, with whom and give them a time by which they need to be home.

Not just strangersMany children are abducted or harmed by people they know. Make sure you know who your children’s friends are; their first and last names, where they live and who their parents are.

Contact detailsHelp your children to learn important information in case they get lost – your house address, your work telephone number and your cell phone number. If they’re too small to remember, write it all down on a card for them.

Safety at the beachMany children go missing on Durban’s beaches every year. To avoid this, always make sure that:Þ They only swim where the lifeguards are and stay in shallow waterÞ They know where the lifeguards’ station is in case they need helpÞ They are supervised at all times.
