UMI Innovation Contest2 March 2012________________________________________________Eligibility This contest is open to all current NUS students.Participants can enter individually or as a teamwith a maximum of 5 members . There are 2 categories in the contest- IdeaDevelopment and Prototype Development.Participants can only participate in one of thecategories. For full details of eligibility, please refer to theofficial UIC Terms and Conditions. 3. UMI Innovation Contest2 March 2012________________________________________________Details of the contest The purpose of this contest is to uncover talents whoare interested in urban transportation and mobilityamongst the student population of NUS. UMI, incollaboration with NCS and MHIESA hopes to explorevaluable ideas from the students and work with thestudents to shape the future of urban mobility in theworld. The contest will be separated into 2 categories- IdeaDevelopment Contest and Prototype DevelopmentContest, and a bonus round. Interested participantscan choose to participate in either of these categories. 4. UMI Innovation Contest 2 March 2012 ____________________________________________ ____Details of the contestThe following are some examples of the fields in urban mobility. However, urbanmobility is definitely not restricted to these points only. Traffic Theory, modelling, simulation Safety System (road safety) V2V & V2I communications Intelligent Vehicles Alternate Fuel Traffic Control Systems Traffic and communications networks Technology for ITS user services Driver assistance Toll collection system Sensors and Actuators Vision systems and processing Multi-modal ITS 5. UMI Innovation Contest 2 March 2012 ____________________________________________ ____Some Urban Mobility innovations already in the market: Smartphone- SG Buses, Summon Auntie, etc Maps- Google Map, OneMap, etc Sensors- Roads, traffic junctions, carparks, etc Smart Vehicles Public Transport- Ezlink system 6. UMI Innovation Contest2 March 2012________________________________________________The UMI Innovation Contest comprises 2 categoriesand a bonus round:Idea Development Competition- Participants arerequired to brainstorm and create a new feasibleproduct that can improve urban mobility in todaysworld. The idea/concept of the product has to besubmitted in the form of a report and/or video, and ithas to include full details of how the product will work,how it will be produced, and how will it benefit urbanmobility. There is no need to produce a prototype forthe idea. The report and/or video will be judged. Thereport should not be longer than 10,000 words. 7. UMI Innovation Contest2 March 2012________________________________________________The UMI Innovation Contest comprises 2 categoriesand a bonus round:Prototype Development Competition- Participants arerequired to brainstorm and create a new feasibleproduct that can improve urban mobility in todaysworld. A report has to be submitted together with theproduct, and the report has to include full details ofhow the product will work and how will it benefit urbanmobility. On top of the report, a prototype withcomplete functionality has to be developed andsubmitted. Both the report and the prototypesubmitted will be judged. The report should not belonger than 10,000 words. 8. UMI Innovation Contest2 March 2012________________________________________________The UMI Innovation Contest comprises 2 categoriesand a bonus round:Bonus Round- After the whole competition, participants who produced the top entries will be invited to participate in the bonus round. In this bonus round, participants will be invited to a joint collaboration with MHIESA or NCS, whereby they will be given the chance to develop the products further on an industrial scale together with the engineers from the companies. The development of their product will be fully funded. However, they may be required to go through formal undertaking/contract with the respective companies. 9. UMI Innovation Contest2 March 2012________________________________________________Examples of Prototypes: Software or Smartphone App Physical Product/hardware/gadget Mechanisms or Machineries Etc.The prototypes should display the functions of theactual product. 10. UMI Innovation Contest 2 March 2012 ____________________________________________ ____Judging CriteriaIdea Development Contest Impact- What does the product help people to do? What are thealternatives users have to using the Product and why is yourProduct better? Market- Is there potentially a sizeable and/or clearly definedtargeted group that the Product is designed for? How well will itappeal to the targeted market? Originality- How original the product is? What is the productsunique selling proposition (USP)? Are there similar productscurrently in the market? Functionality- Is the Product closely related to Urban Mobility?Have the functions of the Product provided improvements in thefield of Urban Mobility? How well does it relate to Urban Mobility? Report- Has the report covered the essence of the product? Was 11. UMI Innovation Contest 2 March 2012 ____________________________________________ ____Judging CriteriaPrototype Development Contest 50% will be judged based on the idea, and 50% will be judged based on theprototype submitted. Impact- What does the product help people to do? What are the alternatives usershave to using the Product and why is your Product better? Market- Is there potentially a sizeable and/or clearly defined targeted group that theProduct is designed for? How well will it appeal to the targeted market? Originality- How original the product is? What is the products unique sellingproposition (USP)? Are there similar products currently in the market? Functionality- Is the Product closely related to Urban Mobility? Have the functions ofthe Product provided improvements in the field of Urban Mobility? How well does itrelate to Urban Mobility? Report- Has the report covered the essence of the product? Was the reportprofessional? Was there plagiarism? Viral Potential- Is the Product indispensible? Will it be used by users frequently? Polish and Appeal- How well do the packaging of the product appeal to users? Is theproduct user friendly? 12. UMI Innovation Contest2 March 2012________________________________________________Awards: Prizes will be distributed as follows; all prizes are in SGD:Idea Development Contest 1st prize: $1,000 2nd prize: $600 3rd prize: $300Prototype Development Contest 1st prize: $2,000 2nd prize: $1,000 3rd prize: $500 Commendation awards: $200Certificate of Commendation will be presented to Participants whoproduced the top 10 entries in each category. 13. UMI Innovation Contest2 March 2012________________________________________________Important dates to take note: 2 March 2012- UMI: UIC announcement 12-15 March 2012- UIC lunchtime Road shows 6 April 2012- Final Date for pre-registration 27 July 2012- Final Submission of report and/orproduct 28 July - 28 Aug 2012- Judging Period 31 Aug 2012- Announcement of Winners 14. UMI Innovation Contest2 March 2012________________________________________________How to Submit your Entry: The deadline for Submission is 27 July 2012 at 11:59:59hrs. Latesubmissions will not be entertained. For Idea Development Contest, the report should be submitted inhard copy (printed) together with soft copy (.doc file) to UMI office. For Prototype Development Contest, the prototype, together withthe report should be submitted to UMI office. The report should besubmitted in both hard copy (printed) and soft copy (.doc file). UMI office is located at National University of Singapore (NUS)Department of Civil Engineering Block E1 #08-13.
