On Saturday January 26, 2019, Lumen Christi is hosting an Archdiocesan Liturgical Ministry Day. The theme is “We Belong” and our guest speakers are Trevor Thomson and Sarah Hart. Sarah and Trevor are nationally recognized Catholic composers and performers, both of whom
have music in our parish hymnal. Breakout sessions will cover a variety of topics: Spirituality of the Eucharist, The Art of the Lector, Gospel Music, Chant, Environment, Technology,
Creating a Welcoming Parish, self-care, and more. You can read more about the day at this link: https://www.archmil.org/offices/worship.htm. On that page is a link to the breakout sessions with their descriptions. The Friday before (January 25) will be a concert here at
Lumen Christi featuring Trevor and Sarah along with some of our own local musicians. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend this special event being held right here in our
own parish! We will be setting up a parish registration to take advantage of the discount for 20 or more from one parish.

EPIPHANY OF THE LORDD HHAAAAAANNYY OOFF TTHHEEJanuary 6, 2019
LLOOEE LL999999999999
Epiphany means “an appearance or a showing.” Jesus was shown to the world on this day, when the
Magi found him in Bethlehem”.
EPIPHANY DOOR BLESSING Pray the following prayer, and then write 20 C M B 18 in chalk over your front door (representing the names of the Magi-Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar which are inscribed
between the numbers of the year). Blessed are you, God of all creation: By the guidance of a star, you led Seekers to your Son,
and by the light of faith, you bring us to know Christ as our Redeemer, The Messiah you have sent.
We ask that this home be a dwelling place of goodness,
humility, self-control, mutual respect for one another, and hospitality to strangers.
By the light of your star, protect our home and guide all who
walk through this door. We ask this through Christ our Redeemer. Amen.
“What Does Church Art and Architecture Teach Us About Our Faith
Every aspect of a Catholic Church building is full of meaning and symbolism. With that in mind, we continue the series of catechetical articles to help us understand the design of our new worship space. “WHY DO WE HAVE STATIONS OF THE CROSS
IN A CATHOLIC CHURCH” This traditional devotion of the church dates back to the early pilgrims in Jerusalem who traced the route of Christ Passion from the house of Pilate to the tomb of Christ known as the Via Dolorosa or the Way of Sorrows. The Franciscans have long been the custodians of the religious sites of the Holy Land. It was St Leonard of Port Maurice who avidly preached the Stations of the Cross to the poor who could not travel to the Holy Land. Beginning in 1686 he is credited with erecting 571 stations in forty-three years, including at the Colosseum in Rome. To this day the Via Dolorosa is celebrated on Good Friday by the Pope at the Colosseum.
The church encourages this devotion to be retained, prayed individually or as an assembly. Each of the fourteen stations is marked with a cross and the appropriate Roman numeral, often an image of the designated station may accompany the station marker. In warmer climates these stations sometimes are located outside of the church. The Lumen Christi stations were donated by Parishioners in the 1990’s. In the newly remodeled worship space these stations will be retained and made more visibly prominent with the new architecture.
We adore you O Christ and we praise you, because by your holy Cross you have redeemed the world.

STEWARDSHIP CORNER For information, call the Parish Office at 242-7967.
The following was taken from Fr Ron Rolheiser’s reflection entitled, Outside the City. God, it seems, favors the powerless, the unnoticed, children, babies, outsiders, and refugees with no resources or place to go. That’s why Jesus was born outside the city, in a stable, unnoticed, outside all fanfare…away from all the persons and events that were deemed important at the time, humble and anonymous….We tend to understand power by how it works in our world and there it works through popularity, through mass media, through historical privilege, through financial clout…and, not infrequently, through raw aggression, greed, and insensitivity to the needs of others and of nature….Scripture tells us that’s not how God works. The God that Jesus incarnates doesn’t enter into this world with a huge splash…God, as scripture shows, works more through anonymity than through the headlines, more through the poor than the powerful, and more through those outside the circles of power than those inside them… God works more discretely, in quiet, touching soul, touching conscience, and touching that previously touched part inside of us where we still unconsciously bear the memory of once, long before birth, being touched, caressed, and loved by God… Babies overpower no one…They lie helpless and cry for love and care…No physical, intellectual, or athletic power can ultimately touch the human conscience as can a baby-and similar sights of innocent helplessness, a wounded bird, an abandoned kitten, a young child alone and crying. What’s best in us enflames, healthily, in the presence of powerlessness and innocence. That’s how God enters into us, gently, unnoticed…You see this too…in the various apparitions of Mary…that have been approved by the Church. She’s appeared to children, to a young woman of no earthly importance, to an illiterate peasant, and to various others of no worldly status…we see in the birth of Christ, God’s word bypasses the centers of power and gestates instead in the hearts and consciences of those outside the city. May the New Year awaken in us the Truth of God’s Love for all of us! Bob Pauly, Minister of Discipleship
AGE OF WISDOM MEETING
Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at 1:30 pm St James Hall
Our speaker will be Representative Jim Ott. He will discuss issues affecting the state of Wisconsin. Bring your questions about Jim’s time in Madison, as well as concerns about our Wisconsin home.
January 6, 2019 - Epiphany of Our Lord “…the Gentiles are co-heirs, members of the same body,
and co-partners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the Gospel.” (Ephesians 3:6)
Today we celebrate that Christ came to all of us, not just the Hebrews. He has given each of us unique gifts. We all have different yet equally valuable roles to play in the Body of Christ. Pray daily and ask God how He wants you to use your gifts so that we may all “be one”.
MEN’S RETREAT MARCH 8-10, 2019
The Theme for the silent retreat at the Redemptorist Retreat Center in Oconomowoc is: “Witnesses of the Redeemer – Mission to a Wounded World.” To be a witness of the Redeemer is to commit oneself to the person of Jesus, to His teaching and to His attitude. We are called and sent by the Lord Jesus to share hope with others, to have compassion for them, and to identify with their struggles. It means that we commit ourselves to be in solidarity with those who are wounded and deprived. We do so in the name of the faith we have received in Baptism. For more information or to signup, please contact Don McCann at [email protected] or Chuck Gentilli at 262-241-3852.

CHRISTMAS ANGEL TREE – THANK YOU!
Thank you to all who spread Christmas joy this Advent Season by participating in the Christmas Angel Tree program. By your generous giving, many blessings were received and tangible signs of God’s love for all became visible. The gifts which were so lovingly chosen by you were gratefully received by over 500 children from the families served by the Riverwest Food Pantry. The families receiving gifts expressed their gratitude with notes of appreciation, which are hanging on the tree in the church foyer. Gifts were also given to St Hyacinth’s, Meta House, Children’s Hospital, and Woman’s Care Center. Thank you to all the parishioners of Lumen Christi Parish who so lovingly made angel tags, gave Christmas gifts, made Christmas cards, knit slippers and hats, baked cookies, sorted gifts or volunteered their time for this project. The tremendous outpouring of love to our neighbors through your generous giving is heartwarming and inspiring. Thank you so much!
