Prospects A depth problem, compounded by the introduction of

the freshman rule, sums up the 1964-65 hockey situation at UMD.

With 17 lettermen available, Coach Ralph Romano voices cautious optimism.

"If we can avoid costly injury or eligibility problems, we should be able to compete favorably with all of our tough opposition," said Romano. "We are so thin, however, that we could go from a tough team to a shaky one in a hurry."

The injury problem has already gnawed away at a most critical position, claiming sophomore defenseman Herb Lewis for an indefinite period. Lewis, counted on to help fill the gap created by the graduation of Bill McGann, suf-fered a broken ankle in football and will be lost for most , if not all, of the season.

UMD, once again classed as a major independent, faces a grueling schedule, including 19 games with Western Col-legiate Athletic Association (WCAA) members, and partici-pation in the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (R. P. I.) Tournament. The rundown, by position: GOAL-SOLID.

Both lettermen, senior Bill Halbrehder and junior Ron Hill return. Halbrehder, a regular last fall with a 3.6 goal against average, must overcome a tendency to be erratic if the Bulldogs are to have an outstanding season. Hill , who has shown tremendous improvement, is untested. DEFENSE-THIN.

Three lettermen, seniors Dick Fisher and Bob Lund , and junior Bob Hill return. All three are solid, but it is doubtful that they can do the job alone. Hill, who tallied 18 points last fall is a potential standout. Depth must come from three converted forwards and a newly eligible junior. The converts are senior letterman , Marv Zilkie, and sopho-mores Corey Loman and Lyle Johnson. Mike Bretto, a Hib-bing Junior College graduate, is the new addition. FORWARDS-SOLID TO STRONG .

Ten lettermen, including all of last season's regulars, return. With eight of this group having played their first full season of competition during the 1963-64 season, Romano has high hopes for outstanding scoring punch. The line combinations:

1. Two sophomores, Keith 'Huffer' Christiansen, and Pat Francisco, join Mike Tok, to form the line expected to provide the bulk of the scoring punch. This trio collected 41 of the Bulldogs 95 points last winter.

2. Senior Center Terry Shercliffe, joins team captain Owen Rogers, a junior, and sophomore Bob Bell on the unit which generally starts for the Bulldogs. This trio, formed half way through the past season, proved to be the most con-sistent on goals for and against. The Shercliffe-Bell-Rogers trio accounted for 23 goals.

3. A pair of aggressive penalty killing artists, senior Bill McGiffert and junior Dave Stepnes, form the nucleus of the third unit , bolstered by sophomore Dick Maertz. This trio, all Duluth East graduates, accounted for 21 goals, al-though their ice time was limited by the substantial penalty killing of the McGiffert-Stepnes duo.

Coach Romano's hopes for improvement over last sea-son's 11-14 mark obviously rest with the availability of all lettermen for the season. Injury or key ineligibility could strike a telling blow to Bulldog hopes.

Coaching Staff

HEAD COACH RALPH ROMANO A native of F Ott William, Ontario, Romano cut his

hockey teeth as a goalie in the city's minor leagues before coming to Duluth. After graduation from Duluth Central H.S. in 1952, he enrolled at UMD and earned varsity letters in his sophomore , junior and senior seasons.

Romano was active in all phases of student activity while at UMD. He was a member of the Air Force Reserved Officers Training Corps and, upon graduation, spent three years as a navigator in the regular Air Force. He currently holds a reserve rank of captain .

Romano joined the sports staff of the Duluth Herald and News-Tribune after his service tour , before corning to UMD . He presently serves as UMD athletic ticket manager and sports publicist in addition to his coaching duties.

Romano is married to the former Barbara Pederson, al-so a UMD graduate. They have four children; Ralph Jr. 7, Elaine 6, Jeffrey 4, and Kevin 3.

ASSISTANT COACH MICHAEL HALEY Assistant coach Mike Haley, one of the finest goaltend-

ers in UMD annals, enters his fourth season on the staff. Haley still owns the UMD record for the best goaltend-

ing average in a season , set during his senior year (1960-61) at 2. 7 goals per game. This performance also earned him the squad's Most Valuable Player award .

It has naturally fallen upon Haley to correct the flaws of the goaltending corps . His work with Bill Halbrehder, the current regular, has been particularly impressive .

Haley prepped at Minneapolis Southwest where he also gained the Most Valuable Player award. He moved to Duluth with his family the following year .

When not coaching hockey , Haley works in the sales department of Minnesota Power and Light Company.

ASSISTANT COACH BILL MCGANN UMD' s lone graduating senior , Bill McGann, has been

appointed to assist Coach Ralph Romano with the 1964-65 Bulldogs. McGann, a hard-driving defenseman, will spend most of his time with the blueline corps.

A Duluth Central grad , McGann spent four seasons as a regular with the Bulldogs serving as team captain last fall .

McGann is married, and is combining his coaching duties with final work on his B.S. degree in Physical Education.
