1.3 SYSTEM OVERVIEW
The CMS (Control and Monitoring System) has the role to monitor and control the behavior of the Air Traffic Control (ATC) system to guarantee reliable and safe operations of the system. The CMS system is installed in an ATC operative with the purpose to supervise computer nodes and equipment of ATC control rooms.
The CMS system monitors in real-time the data received from the interfaced computer nodes, equipment, and software functions which are installed either in radar sites or in the ATC control room. This data includes the status of the ATC components, diagnostic, alarm, and notification messages which are received from all ATC sub-system. Alarm messages are notified to the operator in a visual and audible way.
The CMS system also allows the operator to interact with the controlled ATC system. The CMS operator can send commands to the ATC subsystems and software applications (CSCI) in order to reconfigure the system, or to change its operational status, or to modify system parameters e.g. to accommodate the system after an anomaly occurred. Moreover, CMS performs real-time data logging services. All monitored data is recorded in real time. Log data can be retrieved by the operator and displayed on the workstations according to different selection criteria.
The CMS system is based on a modular architecture including computer nodes connected to a Local Area Network (LAN). The CMS hardware configuration consists of commercially-available, a LAN which interconnects the CMS workstations "designated" as "CMS LAN". In a minimum configuration, the CMS system consists of two CMS workstation installed in the TSM and in AACC SPV positions. A CMS workstation can be either configured as an "Operative Supervisor" or a "Technical Supervisor" mode. Each mode is associated to a given group of commands which the user is allowed to issue to the ATC system. In addition, a CMS can also support the "Global Supervisor" mode which allows the operator to issue all types of commands to the ATC system.

3. INTERFACE DESCRIPTION
This chapter describes all the interfaces of the CMS towards the system components (functions) and the operator.
Annexes A, B and C give more detailed informations about the Man Machine Interface of the CMS workstations of ARAD TECHNICAL PLANT CMS.
Annex D describes in a more detailed way, the informations that each function sends on the LAN by means of the SMD function and how these informations are used to show the relevant status on the CMS.
3.1 INTERFACE TOWARDS SYSTEM FUNCTIONS
On each node of the system, a basic CSCI named System Message Dispatcher (SMD) is loaded, to interface all the other functions loaded on the nodes to the LAN.
In details, the SMD function provides the following services:
1. receives diagnostic and alarm consumption requests from nodal CSCIs and dispatches them diagnostic messages according to the requested level of priority;
2. receives status messages consumption requests by nodal CSCIs and dispatches them status messages received from the other system nodes;
3. dispatches to nodal CSCIs, either periodically, or on changes or on requests, the global status message of the node;
4. dispatches command messages from external and internal CSCIs to nodal CSCIs;
5. dispatches command messages from internal CSCI to CSCIs on other nodes in the system. SMD sends the command message to the SMD on the destination node. From the SMD on the destination node the command is dispatched to the destination CSCIs;
6. provides the services to synchronize all nodes with the system time;
7. provides timer management services for the time-out activation or the periodic activation of its services;
8. initializes all used resources of the internal operative system, internal mailbox, paths, buffer pools and timers and data structures;
9. exchanges synchronization messages with the other SMD in the system to keep aligned all used tables for inter node message dispatching;
10. provides the services to lock/unlock the node, enabling/disabling the execution of commands internal to the node according to the lock role;
11. executes commands directed to the system ("Set Password", "Disable Password", and "Change Password").
So SMD commands can provide the CMS with the information relevant to the control and monitoring of the node itself and of the other nodes present in the system. It provides the user with all the related information, with tables or messages on the I/O Console and by means of representation that uses different colours and levels on the CMS. As specified at point 2. , SMD receives and dispatches status message of every function loaded in a node. All related boxes and colours are shown in Annex A.
UNCLASSIFIED Page 15
BUSINESS UNIT ATMAS UNCLASSIFIED EE110008303UME184Issue NDate: 14/11/2008
The software functions, actually able to communicate with the CMS using the SMD function as S/W interface, are the following :
- Multi Radar Tracking (MRT)
- Recording & Playback (REC/PLB)
- Short Term Conflict Alert (TCA)
- Real Common Data (RCD)
- Playback Common Data (PCD)
- Advanced Display (ADI)
- Node supervisor (NSV)
- Track handler (TRH)
- Control Monitoring (CMS)
- Flight Data Processing (FDP).
Annex D describes all the informations available from the functions.

3.2 INTERFACE TOWARDS THE OPERATOR
In this paragraph, the MMI (Man Machine Interface) of the CMS is described with reference to the levels, frame, colour and commands.
3.2.1 ATC STATUS Presentation
This function is automatically activated after the CMS start-up phase and its purpose is to detect and display in graphical way the system status variations and it is terminated by the Close Session command available on the menu-bar. This command quit the CMS application and terminate all CMS functions.
The ATC system in the CMS is represented with a set of monitoring pictures containing graphical objects representing a single system component or a set of system components. The monitoring pictures are organised in hierarchical way, so the top level picture (root picture) describes the whole ATC system in synthetic way, the lower level pictures represent part of the ATC system in more detailed way.
Only one monitoring picture at time can be displayed in the workspace area.
Graphical objects representing single system component (low level objects) have black background colour.
Graphical objects representing a set of system components (high level objects), have grey background colour and allow the downward navigation to display the lower level picture.
The system components status is represented by the graphical object frame colour and by explanatory texts associated to the related graphical objects.
The graphical objects will take a specific colour related to the status of the system component represented as show in the following table:
COMPONENT STATUS GRAPHICAL OBJECT COLOUR (degradation level)
Not Monitored Yellow ---
Stand-by or Reserve Cyan 1
Fault Red 2
Nominal Green 3
Logical Off Magenta 4
Degraded Orange 5
No Information White 6
TABLE 1
The colour upon shown can be either blinking or not. The blinking colours are used when a transition low level - higher level of degradation occurs.
The blinking colours are not applied to graphical objects contained in lowest level pictures.
The low level objects take the colour from the status of the system components represented by themselves.The high level objects take the colour resulting by synthesis of the status of the components represented by themselves.
UNCLASSIFIED Page 17
BUSINESS UNIT ATMAS UNCLASSIFIED EE110008303UME184Issue NDate: 14/11/2008
On a transition to an higher level of degradation of a system components, the related low level graphical objets and the affected high level graphical objects take the new colour and start to blink until the button “ack blink” is pressed by the user.
If the picture displayed is not the highest level picture (root picture) and a transition to an higher level of degradation of a system components occurs, the “Root” button start to blink in red colour to notify the user that a status of some components is degraded, and it stop blink when the user click on it, in this case the root picture will display and at least one graphical objet in it will blink. If the blinking object in the root picture is an high level graphical object the user can navigate to display the lower level picture to see which particular component caused the status changing.
If the picture displayed is not the highest level picture (root picture) and a transition to a lower level of Degradation of a system components occurs, the “Root” button start to blink in green colour to notify the user that a status of some components is improved and it stops blink when either the user click the “Root” button or a transition to an higher level of degradation of a system components occurs.
3.2.2 Synthesis Colours
The ATC system in the CMS is represented with a set of monitoring pictures containing graphical objects representing a single system component (Low Level Objects) or a set of system components (High Level Objects). The monitoring pictures are organised in hierarchical way, so the top level picture (root picture) describes the whole ATC system in synthetic way, the lower level pictures represent part of the ATC system in more detailed way (Annex A shows the monitoring pictures).
The system send to the CMS the status of single system components that are used to colour the frames of the related Low Level Objects but does not send the status of logical group of system components represented by the related High Level Objects, therefore the CMS, to retrieve their frame colour, use the status of the single system components represented by them and the Synthesis Table shown in Table 2.
The Synthesis Table allows, given two Low Level Objects colours, to retrieve the High Level Object colour. In case of more then two Low Level Objects colours the same logic in recursive way is applied, using the first synthesis result as operand for the next synthesis.

BUSINESS UNIT ATMAS UNCLASSIFIED EE110008303UME184Issue NDate: 14/11/2008
Every High Level Object contained in the root picture have associated the list of the Low Level Objects represented by them. The user can see this list by clicking with the middle mouse button on the High Level Object, and the synthesis window containing a list of toggle buttons appears. Each toggle button is labelled with the name of the Low Level Object represented by its followed by the status ON or OFF that means if it participates or not to the synthesis of the High Level Object.
Clicking one of this buttons it toggles to off, this means that Low Level Object represented by it will no more participate to the synthesis of the High Level Object colour until the same button is pressed again and turned to on.
NoteThe color of boxes "RADAR LINES" do not indicate an eventual failure of a channel not selected. In fact when a not selected radar channel is in failure the synthesis remains green. Only in case on Change Radar Channel (REL RCS) on fault channel will update the syntesys. This behaviour is due to absence of polling of radar channels from MRT functions is at least one channel is OK. In any case the failure of radar channel is visible into the RFE node status and RFE Function.
3.2.3 Navigation Through frame hierarchy
The ATC System is represented in the monitoring frame by means of a certain number of pictures containing graphical objects representing the system components or collections of system components.
The picture are organised in hierarchical way, so at the highest level there is a picture that summarise in it all the ATC system, at the lower levels there are pictures that describe in more detailed way the same component depicted at the higher level.
Graphical objects that are depicted in more detailed way in a lower level picture have the grey background. The navigation function is automatically activated during the CMS start-up phase.The user can navigate through the hierarchy frame in one of the following way:
1. by positioning the mouse cursor on the high level graphical object and clicking with the left mouse button to get the lower level picture (Downward Navigation).
2. by clicking the “Previous” button positioned in the title-bar to get the previous picture (Upward Navigation).
3. by clicking with the right mouse button in the monitoring frame to display the pop-up menu an then select the “Previous” item in the pop-up menu to get the previous picture (Upward Navigation).
4. by clicking the “Root” button positioned in the title-bar to get the highest level picture (Upward Navigation).
5. by clicking with the right mouse button in the monitoring frame to display the pop-up menu an then select the “Root” item in the pop-up menu to get the highest level picture (Upward Navigation).
6. by clicking the “Mark&Resume” button positioned in the title-bar to display a pop-up window as depicted in fig. 1. This window contains a list of previously marked pictures. The user can select one of these pictures and then click the Resume button to display the selected picture in the monitoring frame (see also Mark/Unmark procedure).
The navigation function is terminated by the Close Session command available on the menu-bar. This command quit the CMS application and terminate its functions.
After the navigation inputs given by the user, the previous picture disappear and the new picture is displayed in the monitoring frame.
