The Fishermans Friendsare shanty singers from Port Isaac

on the rugged, panoramic north coast of Cornwall in the

It was on the high seas of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries

that the Shanty singing tradition of the British Isles wasborn and thrived. Britains fleet was manned by sailors

from all four corners of the globe and the Shanty was their

common tongue, a work song combining the call-and-

response of African music with European and New World

folk balladry tied together in a swinging rhythm that

continues to intoxicate listeners and singers today.

There has been a renaissance of traditional music in manyparts of the world in recent times and there is a great deal

of excitement about this release in the UK.
