Transcript of UMBCXCTF's Preview of the AEC Indoor Track Championships
For years the America East Conference meet was hosted by Boston University, however with their defection to the Patriot League, the Conference sought out other venues using the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston last year and this year, for the first time ever, the World Renowned New York City Armory Track. The site of the historic Millrose Games amongst many national and world level competitions, it is generally regarded as one of the fastest indoor 200 meter banked tracks in the United States. Located in New York City near the base of the George Washington Bridge, events will take place on Sunday evening and the morning/early afternoon hours on Monday. Last year the men’s and women’s teams from Albany took home the Conference Title, but the UMBC team took home most of the hardware after their third place finish on the Men’s side and a record second place finish on the women’s side. While many great athletes having either graduated, are red shirting or are without any remaining indoor eligibility, the Retrievers bring back many of the athletes who led the way last year. Anchoring the teams will be two-time Performer of the Meet Mercedes Jackson along with returning 500m champion Paulette Fogle and All Conference performers Cody Mezebish and Nmeoma Edokobi for the women. Conference Champions Andrew Smith, Hassan Omar, Vincent Rentzsch and Thor Serafenas will lead an underdog group of men to attempt to repeat last year’s performance. Meet Info:
Tickets will be $15.00 at the door, $10.00 if you have a student ID
“Visible” food and drink cannot be brought into the Armory
Street parking is available but limited, very limited, borderline non-existent
If staying in the city, take the Red A to the 168th street station
If staying in New Jersey, the Fort Lee area is the closest with taxi being the easiest method to get to facility though it will cost at least $30.00
If driving, take 95 North to the George Washington Bridge. Stay on the top level of the bridge in the right lane. Take the exit to 178th Street/Broadway. If possible make immediate right onto Fort Washington. Park as close to 168th Street as possible. Bring horseshoes, rabbit feet, four leaf clovers, and troll dolls for luck in regards to traffic and parking.

into the Indoor Track and Field Championships. Serafenas, who scored in both the indoor and
outdoor shot put will also look to continue this streak of points.
America East Championships
Meet Preview
After winning the 60 meter and 200 meter dashes at last year’s Indoor Championships, Mercedes Jackson returns as the commanding number one seed in both events heading into the weekend
Last year Paulette Fogle set a school mark en route to winning the Conference Championship in the 500 meters. With stiff competition from a Conference newcomer she will need a similar effort to repeat. Though her biggest competition might come from her own teammate in Deborah Adelola. A former scorer in this event, Adelola set a personal best mark last time out.
After running a personal best 56.92 in the 400 meters in her last attempt, Kalane Abbey finds herself as one of the favorites for the Conference title
Freshman Mercedes Tillman will be pulling triple duties in the 60m, 200m, and 400m dashes.
Two under the radar athletes that you should keep your eye on this weekend as they may score in multiple events are D’Nique Phillip (60m and 200m) and Briana Young (200m and 400m)
Sean Cooper will lead a men’s squad in the sprints. His last time competing in the Indoor Championships he set IC4A marks in both the 60m and 200 m dashes
After missing out on IC4A Qualifying marks in the 400m and 500m by mere hundredths of a second, freshman Erick Soetje will focus his efforts on the 400 meters
Last year’s Indoor 800 meter Champion in Andrew Smith returns with a commanding lead in the Conference. Having run only 1:53 last year to take the win, he has already run 4 seconds better and could challenge at Top 5 All Time mark in the Conference
Hassan Omar has reset the record books in the 8k XC, 10k XC, 3k, and 5k. Having won the 10k Conference title last year, he enters the meet as one of the favorites for both the 3k and 5k titles
Jake Albino has set the school mark in the 1,000 meters and has flirted with the indoor mile record as well. With the rise in competition look for Albino to make another run at it
The 1,000m should bring some excitement with Nick Johnson moving up to #9 All Time in the event last time out and Charles Bolinger running an IC4A Qualifying 800m last meet
Cody Mezebish will lead the 800 meters after being an All-Conference performer last year in this event. With an ECAC qualification in the 1,000m thus far, another one could be in the works here.
School record holder in both the 800 meters and 1,000 meters, Sarah Daly will look to make a mark in the 800 meters
Last time out, Nicole Dawson ran a massive PR in the 5,000 meters moving up to #7 All Time. In range of an ECAC qualification, Dawson could score for the first time in both the 5k and the 3k
Angelina Oputa has made great strides after making the finals of the 1500m outdoors last year, moving up to #3 All Time in the 1,000m. Watch for her to score her first points for the Retrievers this weekend
Thor Serafenas shot up to the #2 seed in the Conference last weekend after a 60+ foot throw in the weight throw. Only a foot away from the Conference lead, he could add another Conference title to his resume
Nmeoma Edokobi scored in both the shot put and the weight throw last year and enters the meet this year with high seeds that indicate she will repeat this effort from a year ago
At the Penn State National meet earlier this year, Vincent Rentzsch set a #5 All Time mark in the heptathlon. He is definitively in range of becoming only the third Retriever in school history to surpass 5,000 points while contending for a Conference title in an event that UMBC has won three of the last five years
In her first year competing for the Retrievers, Alisha Beeman broke the school mark in the pentathlon. She enters the meet as the second seed and could become the first Retriever to win a Conference title in this event
A former All Conference performer in the high jump while a member of Hartford, Alisha Beeman broke the school mark in the event earlier this year and could challenge for the Conference title on the second day of competition.
Freshman Abby Slonski has quietly been moving up the records books setting the #2 mark and #7 mark in the triple and long jumps respectively and will be in contention to score in both this weekend
Caitlyn Davis recorded the second highest vault in school history in the pole vault earlier this season and enters the weekend with the sixth seed
Mo Drammeh barely missed out on an IC4A qualifying mark in the high jump last time out, but with the stiffest competition in Conference history in the event, the atmosphere should bring out the best in him
Justin Glaze narrowly missed out setting All Time marks in the long and triple jumps in his best meet to date. He could score his first points for the Retrievers this weekend.
Liam Stott started off four years ago as a distance runner but has moved his way up into the Top Ten All Time. Last year he managed to snag a point but will look to increase that total this year
