8. New England Regional Student ProgramNERSP students from Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont enrolled at UMass Amherst pay (starting in Fall 2006) 75% above in-state tuition, rather than out-of-state tuition, if they choose a major not offered in their home state.

The campus offers centralized computing services through the Office of Information Technologies (OIT). All matriculated students are required to have an OIT Account. This Account provides students with access to: over 500 computers available for teaching and public use, a campus wide network accessible from residence halls, public buildings and off-campus, an email account, the campus online course management system, and the campus wireless network. Registration, grades, and student information are available online. The University also offers tools and training to faculty who wish to integrate technology into their curriculum.

The University offers more than 70 domestic and international exchange programs in over 40 countries to more than 700 students each year. Programs are available in Africa, Asia, Australia, Canada, Caribbean, Ireland, Latin America, Russia and East Europe, Western Europe, Scandinavia, and the United Kingdom.

Special Academic ProgramsCommonwealth College, an honors college, offers a dynamic curriculum, including interdisciplinary seminars, enriched honors courses, and opportunities to link academics and community outreach. It offers students a small college environment with the resources of a major university. Commonwealth College resources include special housing opportunities, a computer laboratory, and academic support services, such as the Office of National Scholarship Advisement which assists students applying for prestigious fellowships. Also, students can participate in undergraduate research with the opportunity to present their work at an annual academic conference.

Unique majors include the Bachelor’s Degree with Individual Concentration , through which students may design their own interdisciplinary major under faculty guidance.

University Without Walls (UWW) – This program offers non-traditional students an opportunity to earn flexible, individually designed B.A. or B.S. degrees which can be interdisciplinary in nature.

Residential Academic Programs allow students to combine living and learning experience through residentially based academic programs, such as: Talent Advancement Programs, which offer students in a particular major the opportunity to live and study together; Thatcher Language House - a unique opportunity to speak a foreign language and share cultural activities in a residence hall setting, available to students from freshman through senior year.

Other academic opportunities include national and international student exchange programs, internships and opportunities to engage in community service through a growing number of service learning courses in academic departments.

Students can enroll at no extra charge in courses at Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith Colleges through the Five College Consortium . Five Colleges have open library borrowing, meal exchange, and a free bus system linking the campuses.

Special events include “Something Every Friday” (first-run movies; comedian and other live performances), Multicultural Film Festival, Haitian, Dominican, and CASA Cultural Night, Black Musicians Festival, Jazz in July, and Magic Triangle Jazz series. UMass sports events are free of charge with student identification. Students can attend Center Series Events at the Fine Arts Center for as little as $7, and many shows at the Mullins Center sports arena offer student discounts.

Learning Resource Center -Tutoring, workshops on learning skills, supplemental instruction, assistance with research and taking notes— the Learning Resource Center helps students hone those necessary academic skills. Learning Commons -The UMass Amherst Learning Commons is located on the Lower Level of the W.E.B. Du Bois library. This space brings together library, technology, and other campus services in an environment that fosters informal, collaborative work, and social interaction.

Native American Academic Support Services Program (NASS) - provides mentoring, personal counseling, academic advising, connections with indigenous communities and organizations; United Asia Learning Resource Center (UALRC) - provides a variety of culturally sensitive support services to Asian and Asian American students.Diversity in Management Education Services (DiMES) - The Isenberg School of Management sponsors DiMES.Its goal is to introduce more students of color to Isenberg’s educational programs and to promote diversity within the school’s community.

Multicultural Engineering Program (MEP) - MEP recruits traditionally under-represented minority students through visits to high schools in Massachusetts and college fairs nationwide, and by hosting an annual career day for high school students. To support students once they enroll in the UMass Amherst College of Engineering, MEP provides academic advising, tutoring, mentoring, and financial aid counseling. The program also works with students to find research, co-operative education, and internship opportunities during their college years, and jobs upon graduation.

Campus Career Network: helps students and alumni identify and pursue satisfying careers through a variety of programs and services; also offers programs to assist employers who are seeking talented students or alumni.

Commuter Services and Housing Resource Center (CSHRC): CSHRC provides a variety of services to UMass commuter students; the website is designed to make searching for off-campus housing and family programs easier; drop by the office for information about locker rentals on campus, how to register to vote, and other community issues.

Disability Services: helps students identify and obtain appropriate accommodations (academic or otherwise) to help them succeed at UMass.

Everywoman’s Center: EWC's mission is to provide leadership in promoting educational access and equity for women, to empower women to take full control of their lives and to strengthen the connections among women.

Health Services: the campus health clinic, providing a variety of services including an emergency room, pharmacy, and primary care doctors.

Mental Health Services: provides a vareity of mental health services including counseling, support groups, and referals for both students and employees.

Student Employment: the central office for students to find employment both on campus and off.

Student Legal Services Office: provides no-cost legal advice for students.

University Child Care: University Child Care provides full-day and flexible-schedule child care services for children ages 15 months through five years. University students and employees are eligible to enroll their children in the program.
