Course Description

Human Geography AP is a yearlong, college-level course that focuses on the distribution, processes, and effects of human populations on the planet. Students also learn about the methods and tools geographers use in their science and practice. Emphasis is placed on geographic models and their applications. Students will also learn how to employ spatial concepts, geographic vocabulary, and landscape interpretation to a variety of locations and situations around the globe as well as in local areas. Overall, students will develop a geographic perspective in their manner of thinking with which to view the landscape of the world and better understand current events.

This course will cover a large amount of content. The study of Human Geography is both historical and contemporary. Therefore, it is essential that students remain aware of what is happening in the world. It is suggested that the regular reading of newspapers and news magazines as well as the regular viewing of news broadcasts be maintained throughout the course.

Students have the opportunity to earn college credit by passing a standard exam in May. This course description and following syllabi have passed the audit requirements for the AP College Board. As a result, the curriculum and the requirements are college level and the expectations of the AP College Board must be followed.

Procedure for Parent Access to Instructional Materials:

Tennessee law [Public Chapter 660] requires that parents or guardians be allowed to view instructional

materials being used with their children. Williamson County Schools parents or guardians who wish to

view materials should submit a request in writing to the teacher. In addition, parents should seek

clarification from the teacher about any assignment or instructional material about which they have

concerns. Unresolved concerns may then be brought to the attention of the school administration.

Unit I. Geography: Its Nature and Perspectives

A. Geography, as a field of inquiry, looks at the world from a spatial perspective. 1. Explain the importance of geography as a field of study

a. Geographic information provides context for understanding spatial relationships and human– environment interaction.

B. Geography offers a set of concepts, skills, and tools that facilitate critical thinking and problem solving. 1. Explain major geographical concepts underlying the geographic perspective.

a. Geographical concepts include location, place, scale, space, pattern, nature and society, networks, flows, regionalization, and globalization.

2. Use landscape analysis to examine the human organization of space. a. Landscape analysis (e.g., field observations, photographic interpretations) provides a

context for understanding the location of people, places, regions, and events; human–environment relationships; and interconnections between and among places and regions.

C. Geographical skills provide a foundation for analyzing world patterns and processes. 1. Use spatial thinking to analyze the human organization of space.

a. People apply spatial concepts to interpret and understand population and migration; cultural patterns and processes; political organization of space; agriculture, food production, and rural land use; industrialization and economic development; and cities and urban land use.

land use (e.g., von Thünen model, Latin American city model), industrial location (e.g., Weber model), and the distribution of settlements (e.g., Christaller’s central place theory).

5. Use concepts such as space, place, and region to examine geographic issues. a. Geographical issues include problems related to human– environmental interactions

(e.g., sustainable agriculture); conflict and cooperation among countries (e.g., European Union); and planning and public-policy decision making (e.g., pronatalist policies).

b. Cultural traits are individual elements of culture and include such things as food preferences, architecture, and land use.

a. Classic models that are useful for explaining the internal structures of cities and urban development are the Burgess concentric-zone model, the Hoyt sector model, and the Harris– Ullman multiple-nuclei model.

Quantitative information about a city’s population is provided by census and survey data. b. Qualitative data from field studies and narratives provide information about individual attitudes

The “Test/Assignment” category is calculated on a total point system. This simply means that the student will have the opportunity to score a certain number of points. The opportunities for scoring points come from the interactive notebook, quizzes, projects, tests and other assignments. The student’s score is calculated by taking the total points earned by the student and dividing that number

by the total points possible in this category.

Grades are assigned as indicated below:

Use of Technology in AP Human Geography

It is expected that while students are in class, they will use their devices only when permitted and only for

their AP course work. Any student who is found to be using their device for other tasks or inappropriately

(sending text messages, SNAP CHAT, working on assignments for another class, browsing irrelevant

websites, etc…) will lose the privilege of using their device in this class and a parent/guardian will be

notified.

If you experience unusual difficulty in the assignments, either in general or consistently in a specific area, this is a signal to seek extra help immediately. For best results, attend extra help sessions as needed, rather than only the day before a test or major assignment. Bring in assignments or quizzes you have struggle with to help locate challenging areas.

Students who are unable to come during these times can make other arrangements with the teacher, either before or after school hours. These arrangements must be made in advance so the teacher can plan accordingly.

Interactive Student Notebook (ISN)

All students will keep a 5 subject 8 ½” x 11” COLLEGE RULED spiral notebook of all course work.

Notebooks will be graded periodically for completion and thoroughly at the end of each unit of study.

Goals of using the ISN:

1) To create personal meaning with information that has been covered in class or in the textbook

2) To give a built-in opportunity to organize and review material as we go along

3) To have everything from one chapter/unit in one spot, so all study materials are in one place

4) To teach students study techniques that can be implements in other classes

Studying and Reading Students should expect approximately 30-40 minutes of homework/reading each night. This is a college level course and therefore a great amount of scholarly reading is expected. Almost all of the reading for this class will be completed outside of the classroom. You will be responsible for reading and taking notes on each chapter. Students are expected to do their own reading and work. Copying another students notes instead of reading will not adequately prepare you for the rigorous assessments in an AP course. It is very important that you keep up with the homework and reading, as it is easy to fall behind and difficult to catch up. The lecture notes in class are meant as a supplement, NOT A SUBSTITUTE for reading the text.

ASSESSMENTS:

Reading Quizzes For each section of the chapter, students will take reading quizzes. These quizzes will be much easier for those students who have completed the portion of the study guide that corresponds with that quiz. The questions on the quiz will focus more on information from the textbook. Students are encouraged to use the questions in the Barron’s AP prep book for practice.

Unit Tests Tests in Human Geography AP will cover 1-3 chapters at a time, depending on the unit. All test questions will be structured like those on the AP exam to help students become familiar with the high expectations of the AP exam. To ensure students have plenty of time, tests will be broken up over 2 days, one day for the Constructed Response Questions (CRQ) to assess the depth of understanding and one day for the Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) to assess the breadth of knowledge. The unit tests are challenging and it is strongly recommended that students begin studying at least a week ahead of time, rather than just the night before.

Unit 7 [Chapters 12-13] – CRQ 4/24 & MCQ 4/25

Students will receive a blue KBAT sheet at the beginning of each chapter listing what they will need to “Know and Be Able To” answer for the test. This document should be used as a study guide.

Test Corrections Students who have completed all assigned work, including all notes and interactive notebook assignments, and score below a 75% or lower on the test will be permitted to complete and submit test corrections. Students may receive ½ point for each multiple choice question corrected and up to half of the points missed on the Constructed Response Questions. These must be completed at school during lunch or study hall. Student who score below 65% will be REQUIRED to complete test corrections.

Students coming in to work on test corrections must have completed all assignments and notes before they will be allowed to begin test corrections.

Extra Credit

Aside from what has already been stated (5 points added to semester grade and test corrections), there

is no additional extra credit in this course. Please do not ask. Complete all assigned work on time.

Absences

Students are required to complete all homework and assignments within 3 days after returning to class. *If you are present when a reading quiz is assigned, you are expected to take the reading quiz on the first day you return, unless you request extended time in advance.

*Reading quizzes will be returned at least 2 days before a Unit test. If you have not taken the quiz by that time, you will take a make-up quiz with short answer questions, rather than multiple choice questions

If you are absent it is YOUR responsibility to check the class website for instructions to make up your work. It is also YOUR responsibility to check GOOGLE CLASSROOM for assignments and notes you may have missed in class. Longer absences will be treated on a case-by-case basis for completion of work. Please let me know well in advance if you plan to be absent for an extended period of time.

Franklin High School Policy Regarding Cheating/Malpractice:

Cheating is considered a serious violation of the process of education. It includes, but is not limited to,

the willful giving or receiving of an unauthorized, unfair, dishonest, or unscrupulous advantage over

other students in schoolwork or activities. It is not acceptable to practice plagiarism, which is the

representation of another’s ideas or work as one’s own (original sources should always be cited);

collusion, which is supporting the cheating/malpractice of another; duplication of work, which is

presenting the same work for different assignments without prior permission from an instructor; or any

other behavior that could create such an unfair advantage.

Some specific examples of cheating/malpractice are unauthorized copying of assignments (including

computer documents and files); stealing another student’s homework and turning it in as one’s own;

plagiarism; submitting pre-written work for set classroom exercises or tests; using unauthorized study

aides, notes, books, data, or other information; selling or buying or sharing papers without

authorization; altering an assignment or test after it has been graded; stealing tests or other materials,

or passing such material stolen by others; talking or signaling to another student during a test or quiz;

looking at another student’s answers during a test or quiz, or permitting another student to look at

one’s own test or quiz; possessing or using “crib” or cheat sheets; leaving books open on the floor to

view during a test or quiz; using unauthorized calculators, palm computers, or other electronic devices

to obtain answers during tests or quizzes passing test information on to students in other classes;

computer fraud; sabotaging the projects or experiments of other students.

Of course, this list of examples is not all inclusive. Furthermore, at FHS, intending to cheat is considered

the same as cheating. Because different subjects and assignments may differ in their regard to

cheating/malpractice in some ways, students should be sure to ask their relevant teacher for guidance if

requirements are not clear.

Consequences: For the first cheating offense, at the minimum the student will receive a zero for the

activity, the teacher will contact the parent and the teacher will refer the incident to the appropriate

administrator. For a second offense, at the minimum the student will be placed in ISS for no less than

three days. If a third offense occurs, at the minimum the student will receive five days ISS or perhaps be

placed in the ALC for unruly behavior. Flagrant acts of cheating, such as falsifying or changing a teacher’s

records, will result in greater consequences than the minimum.

AP Exam Information

By taking the AP exam, students have the opportunity to potentially earn college credits for this course.

(Each college and university has its own guidelines for determining how much, if any, credit students may

receive from passing an AP exam.)
