UM LITTLE SYMPHONY TO TOUR

MISSOULA—

A conductor from France, soloists from Chile and California, and a concertmaster

from Hawaii contribute to the cosmopolitan make-up of the University of Montana Little

Symphony, which will perform for high school students and the general public during

a tour March 24-26.

The 39-member orchestra, conducted by Jean Paul Penin, will play Monday, March 24,

at Billings Senior High at 9 a.m. and at Billings West High at 11:45 a.m.; Tuesday,

March 25, at Bozeman High at 11:15 a.m. and 12:50 p.m.; and Wednesday, March 26,

at Butte High at 9:30 and 10:30 a.m.

The orchestra will give a free concert for the public in Butte on Tuesday,

March 25, at 8 p.m. at Montana Tech.

UM faculty members Walter Olivares, violinist, and Bernard McWilliams, violist,

will be soloists with the orchestra.

The program consists of Leonore Overture No. 3, Op. 72, and Symphony No. 1,

Op. 21, both by Beethoven; Symphony in A Major No. 29, K. 201, and Symphonie Concertante,

K. 364, both by Mozart; and Pel leas et Melisande by Faure.

Penin came to Missoula in the fall of 1979 to become conductor of the Missoula

Symphony Orchestra and a member of the UM music faculty. He also conducts the

recently formed Montana Chamber Orchestra in Missoula.

Born 29 years ago in Saint Dizier, France, he began studying piano at the age

of 11, and he sang in his high school choir. He studied mathematics and science at

the University of Nancy, where he took a bachelor's degree, and went on to earn a

Ph. D. in biophysics at the University of Strasbourg.

In 1972, he entered the Strasbourg Conservatory of Music, and that year he

founded the Strasbourg University Orchestra. The orchestra toured Europe and in 1976

won second prize at the International Festival of Youth Orchestras in Aberdeen,

Scotland, and London, England.

After entering the Paris Conservatory in 1977, Penin received a Fulbright

Scholarship to study conducting under Alan Balter at the San Francisco Conservatory.

Last summer Penin attended the Aspen Music Festival, Aspen, Colo., on a conducting

fellowship, and also studied conducting under Franco Ferrara in Siena, Italy. In

September he won the Silver Medal at the International Tokyo Min-on Conducting

Competition, where he was the only non-Japanese finalist.

Olivares, a native of Santiago, Chile, studied violin with Stephan Tertz and

Zoltan Fischer at the National Conservatory of Chile, and at age 15 was chosen to

perform with the Conservatory Orchestra. He has appeared on national TV in Chile

and has toured the United States and South America. He has appeared at the Library

of Congress and the Pan American Union in Washington, D.C., and at Lincoln Center

in New York.

Olivares holds bachelor and master degrees from Texas Tech University, where

he studied with Dr. James Barber. He has taught at Texas Tech and Hardin-Simmons

Uni versi ty.

McWilliams earned degrees in viola and music education from the University of

Southern California, a master's degree from the University of Maryland, and a doctorate

from the University of Iowa. He has studied viola with Joel Berman, Glen Swan,

Stanford Schonbach and William Preucil.

He has been principal violist with the Carmel Bach Festival Orchestra, University

of Iowa Orchestra, and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Orchestra. He is principal violist with

the Missoula Symphony Orchestra. He frequently judges district music festivals, and

he has taught at the Red Lodge Music Camp.
