Jan Sokol-Katz, - Director of Undergraduate Studies in Criminology,

Department of Sociology University of Miami: Jan Sokol-Katz is Lecturer and Director of Undergraduate Studies in Criminology at the University of Miami. Her fields of specialization include delinquency,deviance, and research methods. Dr. Sokol-Katz has written and published onissues related to delinquency and substance abuse, and on adolescent athleticparticipation as it relates to gender, delinquency, and psycho-socialdevelopment. Her articles have appeared in academic journals such as

Adolescence, International Journal of the Addictions, Sociological Spectrum, andSociological Focus.

Mercedes Vigon is Associate Director of the International Media Center,and Associate Professor, School of Journalism, Florida InternationalUniversity.

She has been working for the last two years in a Social Science Research Councilgrant aimed to Improve Media Coverage of Islam and Muslim Communities inLatin America and South Florida. She launched the Journalism Master's Program

with Tec de Monterrey México and trains journalists from Cuba, Mexico, thetriple frontier, (Paraguay, Argentina & Brazil), Venezula and Nicaragua. She also

worked as a TV news director for Net Financial News, and as executive producerand international writer for CBS Telenoticias.

Charles G. MacDonald, Florida International University: Ethnic and Religious Conflict in the Middle East: The Kurdish Pursuit of Social Justice.

Charles G. MacDonald is Professor of International Relations at FloridaInternational University. He has taught at FIU since 1977. His teaching andresearch have focused on the Middle East, Kurdish ethnicity, internationallaw, and human rights. Originally from Ohio, he grew up in Florida and

earned his BA from Florida State University. He earned his MA and PhD inForeign Affairs from the University of Virginia. He had a parallel career inthe Air Force Reserve for more than 30 years, primarily working on the Mid-dle East and on counterdrugs at the national level. He also served on the USMilitary Delegation to NATO. His students have been successful in law,politics, education, diplomacy, the military, and various government agenciesin the service of the United States and other countries. His most recent book is Kurdish Identity: Human Rights and Po litical Status , 2007 (jointly edited withCarole A. O'Leary). His most recent research on the Kurds will appear in

April 2012 in The Wiley-Blackwell Companion to Religion and Social Justice .

Victor Romano is Assistant Professor of sociology and criminology.He earned a BA in Sociology/Anthropology from Florida InternationalUniversity and an MA and Ph.D. from the University of Florida.

Romano teaches courses on race, class, and gender, marriage and the family,and introductory sociology. His professional interests include racial and eth-nic relations, gender stratification, childlessness, and sexuality. Romano haspresented his work at regional and national conferences and serves as aboard member on the Miami-Dade County Equal Opportunity Board. Hismost recent (co-authored) work on childlessness has appeared in Sex Roles : A

Journal of Research and his book on racial and gender social dilemma coopera-tion is forthcoming.

Shaikh Shafayat, was born in Trinidad, West Indies. Graduated as aQaari, Faazil/Islamic Scholar from Deoband, the largest and old-est Islamic Institute in India.

He founded the National Muslim Sports League of Trinidad and Tobago, which established the Islamic Home for Children. He’s also the Founder andEditor of the Al-Hikmat Muslim Magazine and Al-Hikmat TV 24/7 Online.Shaikh Shafayat is a Former president of the Interfaith Council of SouthFlorida.

He organized and conducted many Christian / Muslim / Jewish Dialogues inChurches, Synagogues and Islamic Centers in the U.S.A. He is well knownfor his community leadership. He is a recipient of the Silver Medallion

Award from NCCJ (National Council for Community and Justice) and arecipient of the Peacemaker Award from St. Thomas University in Miami.

He is the Principal and Spiritual Head of Darul Uloom Institute in SouthFlorida

For almost two decades, Mark Davidheiser has engaged human social conflict andits management as a researcher and a practitioner. He is Director of the AfricaPeace & Conflict Network (africapeace.org), Assistant Professor of ConflictResolution & Cultural Anthropology, Editor of African Conflict & Peacebuilding Review, of the African Journal of Political Science & International Relations, and

of Global Ethnographic. Sean D. Foreman is Associate Professor of Political Science at Barry

University. Dr. Foreman earned his M.A. in International Studies fromFlorida International University with a graduate certificate in Latin Americanand Caribbean studies and his Ph.D. in Political Science from FIU in 2003.

He is co-editor of The Roads to Congress 2010 about the midterm elections and has written several book chapters about Florida and national elections. Dr. Foremanhosts a weekly radio show called World of Politics on Barry’s WBRY station andis a frequent guest on talk radio and television and has been quoted in newspapersaround the world. Dr. Foreman is Vice President of the Florida Political Science

Association.
