President’s WelcomeHi and welcome to the University of London Union (ULU)!

My name is Vratislav ‘Vraj’ Domalip and I am your ULU President for the year. Having been Vice President and President of Queen Mary Students’ Union for the past two years I know full well all the issues and problems facing students living and studying in London.

The focus of ULU’s mission this year will be on the strengthening of the representation of London students and ensuring that your concerns, your voices and your issues are heard, so that you can make the most of your time at university.

ULU is run by two elected Sabbatical Officers and we are here to offer support and advice on any problems or concerns you may have. So feel free to drop by our office and have a chat with us.

ULU also offers a massive range of services, from volunteering opportunities to sports clubs and from student journalism to societies. Getting involved in any of these activities is a great way to meet new people and make friends that will stay with you throughout your university career.

University is as much about meeting people and getting involved in extra-curricular activities as it is about academia and here at ULU we endeavour to offer you support on both sides of the spectrum. Whether you just want to take advantage of joining us on a campaign or take a more active role by joining a club or society, writing for the student media or even running for an elected position; don’t be a stranger.

Being a University of London student is a fantastic experience so make the most of it. I look forward to meeting you all.

Best wishes,

Vratislav 'Vraj' Domalip ULU President

Vice-President’s WelcomeHi all, I’m delighted to have been elected as ULU Vice-President (VP).

I think ULU is of tremendous benefit to its members, and I hope we can help make your time at the university more interesting and enjoyable.

ULU of course is a building with shops, bars and a gym, but it’s also much more than that: political representation, campaigns, clubs and societies, sports leagues and more.

ULU has, over the last year, been at the forefront of an exciting movement defending education and fighting against cuts and fees. I’m proud to have been elected on a campaigning platform, and I intend to keep ULU as a radical union. I’ll be prioritising liberation campaigns for women, LGBT, disabled and black students; the fight against cuts and fees at our

university; and ensuring that we resist private provision of education.

I also plan to assist the small and specialist colleges of the University in particular, especially as I come from one myself, Birkbeck. Small and specialist colleges’ individual characteristics and enthusiasm add much to ULU, and I hope we can do more for our members there.

As VP, clubs, societies and sport also come under my remit. I certainly hope to increase participation in sport across ULU, and make sure that more and more people feel welcome and able to take part. I’ve already had several great ideas for new societies discussed with me by enthusiastic ULU members, and hope help have them up and running soon.

I expect Senate, the democratic body of ULU, will

continue to be a forum for debate for people across the Colleges and hope some of you will contribute to that. I plan to hold meetings and debates on issues of interest, as well as continue the variety of political meetings and conferences that ULU already hosts. Opening up the building, democratic process and decision making for our members is a priority.

Please feel free to contact me about ideas you have for campaigns, clubs, and societies or with any other queries.

Best wishes,

Sean Rillo RaczkaULU Vice President

ULU LeaguesLove to play sport or want to try something new? Why not try out the ULU Sports Leagues.

This is a great way to form or join a team in your college student union and play against students in other colleges. To take part in the ULU Leagues, speak to your college union and find out what teams they run. If they have teams in ULU then you can sign up straight away. If your college union does not have a team then contact the ULU Sports Administrator who will give you advice and information on how you can take part.

The ULU sports leagues consist of 36 divisions across 10 sports, with over 4800 competitors.

The leagues aim to deliver sport for University of London students, at a competitive and recreational level.

As well as the leagues, ULU also offer cup knockout competitions to complement the league seasons. These run in most of the sports and provide an extra element to what ULU has to offer to students. At the climax of the season, ULU runs a ‘Finals Programme’, a series of one off days for all the cups finals to be played.

ULU Leagues are getting bigger and better every year, so keep an eye out for new sports becoming available. If you have a sport that you would like to be included then feel free to get in touch any time.

London Student The London Student is the newspaper of the University of London Union. Established in 1954 and catering for over 120,000 students, it has a rich history and is the only newspaper for all University of London students, and the fortnightly publication is available on all college campuses.

It has four main sections – News, Comment, Features and Sport- as well as a cultural supplement, Play, which has 8 sections – Literature, Travel, Stage, Screen, Music, Food, Fashion and Arts. Its structural diversity allows it to cover everything relevant to students – as well as the odd not-so-relevant story!

All students are welcome and encouraged to get involved with the London Student, whether they want to report a news article on university funding, argue a polemical point on protests, review a play they’ve recently been to see or share a photo they’ve taken; the London Student is a paper for students by students.

The London Student will also be organising journalism training events, debates and discussions with professionals in the field, open days, and a secondary school student scheme which sees university students visit disadvantaged secondary schools in London and help them set up their own newspaper, magazine or newsletter.

For the 2011/2012 academic year, London Student has launched a new, dynamic, multimedia website: www.london-student.net. The website features a range of items, from breaking news through regular podcasts to diaries of students studying abroad. If you have any ideas or would like to get involved with any aspect of London Student, please send an email to [email protected] – we’d love to hear from you.

There will be a Fresher’s Special version of the newspaper in September, so don’t forget to pick up your copy – even if it’s just to make sure you haven’t hit the headlines and become the talk of the Union
