Engineering Services

Our design services span specialist consultancy to support investment decisions, through concept and front-end engineering (FEED), into detailed design and execution, including procurement support and construction management.

We support both greenfield and brownfield developments, the latter spanning onshore and offshore, from like-for-like replacements focused on maintaining asset integrity through to multi-discipline, major modification projects and upgrades.

From the concept to the detail, we provide design and engineering services across the life cycle of oil, gas and renewable assets. We embed digital tools into our processes to support ultra-efficient delivery, optimising cost and schedule for our clients.

Engineering ConsultancyOur consultancy services complement Petrofac’s wider engineering capability, providing expert advice, analysis and assurance for oil, gas and renewable energy assets onshore, offshore and subsea. This expertise underpins our delivery of front-end and wider engineering delivery, enabling us to unlock even the most complex projects.

FEEDWhen we execute a FEED, we are committed to providing security of cost and schedule, along with designs that are implementable and operable. We use our experience of delivering over 200 major EPC projects, and the intelligence drawn from these, to benchmark our solutions, providing true fidelity of CAPEX and schedule. And we can integrate our front-end and execution activities where required, to significantly fast-track projects.

BROWNFIELD MODIFICATIONSOur operational know-how gives us insight into managing the challenges of modifications during ongoing operations. We use this to deliver designs that are safe and constructible, operable and reliable. It also ensures we design modifications that can be be installed with minimum impact on ongoing operations.

Project Execution & Construction

Brownfield Modifications We deliver any size of project; from minor modifications and like-for-like replacements through to multi-discipline major modification and capital projects such as subsea tiebacks and facility upgrades. Our services are fully scalable and focused on delivering value where our clients need it. Our processes and procedures scale to meet project requirements, ensuring we deliver right-sized, fit-for-purpose solutions.

Across our engineering systems, we are applying machine learning to develop analytics within our systems to automate key engineering processes. These initiatives reduce man-hour costs, increase accuracy and speed up the production of the engineering deliverables. Flexible DeliveryPetrofac is renowned for its capability in lump-sum turnkey (LSTK) engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) delivery for major and mega projects, but we can also provide a range of commercially flexible delivery solutions such as EPCm, smaller EPC and modifications projects in alignment with our clients’ needs. This flexibility allows us to meet all manner of challenges, whether related to schedule, cost or a requirement to maximise in-country value.

Delivery assurance

Across the engineering, procurement and construction project life cycle, we are combining our experience with data and digital technology solutions such as Cloud-based applications, collaboration and communication tools, smart devices and wearable technology to transform how and where we work.

WHERE SAFETY IS A VALUE‘Connected Construction’ is an active, ongoing trial at one of our project sites in Oman where we are the EPC contractor. During the trial, construction workers have been provided with tags which provide visibility of their precise location, to support the fast deployment of emergency assistance in the event of an emergency. It also gives insight into the movement of personnel around the site and time spent in productive and non-productive areas, enabling management to deploy alternative strategies to improve productivity and reduce downtime.

FOCUSED ON PRODUCTIVITYIn addition to the important safety benefits, the dashboard also gives real-time visibility of materials and equipment across the site. This is helping supervisory teams track trends, apply interventions and more effectively manage and reduce downtime due to lack of materials and equipment.

Average response times have been reduced to 3.5 minutes following activation of a safety alert

Trials of Connected Construction have delivered an uplift of 5% in productivity

ProcurementWe have a network of over 400 procurement specialists and an annual spend of around US$2 billion, which we leverage to ensure we achieve the right solution at the most competitive rate to return value back to our clients.

Construction and Commissioning Maintaining the critical path throughout construction needs a fully aligned approach to delivery from project outset. Our experienced teams and integrated approach enable us to manage and mitigate risks posed to the schedule and focus on operational excellence to achieve flawless right-first-time delivery.

Managed AssetsWe provide a full asset management solution for facilities, wells and pipelines focused on improving production and up time in line with our clients’ asset objectives.

We pioneered the original outsourced Duty Holder model in 1997. This cost-effective model is beneficial for new entrant operators and international oil companies with assets in the late life phase.

Our flexible well engineering and project management solutions are delivered in close collaboration with our clients, supporting them across the well life cycle, from the development of new resources to well plugging and abandonment.

Well Engineering

Well OperatorExtending our pioneering Duty Holder model, we can take full responsibility for the monitoring and management of wells on behalf of our clients as Well Operator. We were the first outsourced Well Operator to manage a drilling campaign in the UKCS under new regulations set by the Offshore Safety Directive Regulator. Within this service we focus on:

Well Project ManagementOur project management services span full-scale well operation and construction through to the provision of small, integrated project teams to support client-own projects. Well EngineeringCovering all aspects of well engineering and well site operations, we can support discrete studies through to full field development plans for new resources focused on cost-efficiency and maximising the value of the developed asset. Our capability includes specialist engineering, such as high pressure, high temperature, as well as all onshore and offshore environments including remote, deep water, shallow water and desert.

Well Plugging and AbandonmentFrom initial review to methodology selection, detailed planning and engineering through to execution, our services support the safe abandonment of wells and preparation of decommissioning activities. We can help minimise risk and reduce contractual burden and our innovative strategies have helped clients save millions and reduce timelines. We have a thorough understanding of the issues facing assets approaching abandonment and take a fit-for-purpose, asset-led approach to each project. Our services can be delivered standalone or integrated as part of our wider decommissioning capabilities.

Fundamental to our well operation activities is our project management software, Turus. Developed by Petrofac over the past decade, it underpins all our internal well construction projects and is used by several global operators. The tool offers complete visibility of well delivery tasks, streamlining audits and driving increased levels of assurance and risk management across well projects.

Our services span competency consultancy, the delivery of practical training courses, and digital training content right through to the design, build and management of client-owned training infrastructure.

Training DeliveryDuring our 40 + years as a training provider we’ve worked closely with the industry to pioneer many of today’s industry standards and training courses. We continue to be a leader in the field of safety, survival, marine, fire and emergency response training for the oil, gas and renewables industries.

Training FacilitiesWe use our global EPC experience and capabilities to design and build cutting-edge practical training facilities that blend digital training content with best-in-class plant and process skids to support our clients’ competency objectives, nationalisation programmes and facility-specific training requirements. We can implement specialist software to support the day-to-day running and management of the facilities too.

Digital Training ContentWe blend digital training content with practical and classroom-based learning to enhance learning outcomes. We have a library of over 200 eLearning courses and provide custom content, designing and implementing equipment-specific animation, 3D modelling and augmented reality animations to support the safe preparation of delegates before they encounter live operations in the field.

Competence Management Software Designed to improve reliability, predictability, compliance and risk, our competence management software, Skills VX, maps and manages workforce competency, from inception to completion. Specific to the needs of the oil and gas sector, it is designed to assess, manage and track workforce competency across organisations, assets and regions.

Emergency Response and Crisis ManagementWe have over two decades’ experience in developing and implementing crisis management processes and procedures for high-risk sites across the oil, gas and renewables landscape. This includes the development of emergency response strategies and ongoing improvements plans.

Emergency Response Service Centre (ERSC)Petrofac’s ERSC in Aberdeen currently supports over 40 clients and nearly 400 assets worldwide. Clients benefitting from this unique support service include operators, drilling contractors, vessels, well management companies and helicopter providers and we can support the full range of offshore assets.

Training Management ServicesOur fully outsourced training management service has supported clients for two decades. Bringing specialist knowledge of the oil and gas sector, our team takes a holistic approach, tailoring the services to each client’s needs. The service removes the administrative burden of managing training in house and can include the development of training matrices through to the day-to-day management of course bookings, certification and recertification. And, because we have relationships with over 300 third party training providers, clients benefit from economies of scale and assurance that they can secure exactly the training they need, when they need it.
