EducationCultural & Educational Tours Cream Teas & Festive Tours

Great geological, cultural, wildlife and historical facts that surround the Ullswater valley making it the perfect location to create cultural, wildlife and educational tours. Ullswater is approx. 7.5 miles (12km) long and approx. 0.5 miles wide (0.8km), with an area of 3 square miles (4.8 square km) lying at a height of 477 feet above sea level.

Ullswater was formed by three separate glaciers, this is why it is unique in The Lake District. It is the only lake with three separate reaches and its two distinct dog-legs. Ullswater is a typical narrow “ribbon lake” formed after the last ice age when the deepened section of the valley floor filled with meltwater from a retreated glacier. During a volcanic upheaval approximately 450 million years ago, faults in the rocks allowed movement; Howtown is located on such a fault which gives Ullswater its characteristic kink.

The valley today is dominated by three main groups of rocks; the Borrowdale Volcanics, Skiddaw Slates and the Carboniferous Limestone. One of the finest geological examples of a hanging valley can be found on the Eastern shore. Its beauty has inspired famous poets, artists and writers over the centuries such as Turner and William Wordsworth. The famous Daffodil poem was written after a walk along the lakeshore in 1802 by William and his sister Dorothy.

We are currently developing our educational packages to be introduced soon. We are working with Penrith & District Red Squirrel Group and National Trust Aira Force to provide educational tours for Key Stage 1 children. Ask us for more information.

Operating 363 days a year we offer the perfect option to combine a cruise with a traditional English cream tea or festive lunch at the many eateries that surround Ullswater.
