UKRAINE – 2007
Train from Moscow to Rovno (Volin’ Region).
This was my last trip to the Ukraine to visit my relatives from my Dad’s side. I had
previously visited them in 1989 when the Soviet Union was still in existence. Then I
visited them in 1992 after Ukraine gained its independence, and again in 1996 with my
daughter Susie.
I had relatives in many parts of Ukraine: Velikiy Les (“Big Forest”), Stantsiya Lugini,
Korosten, Rovno, Fastov, and Kiev.

Map of Ancient Volin’ (Volhynia) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volhynia Volhynia (/voʊˈlɪniə/), also Volynia or Volyn (Polish: Wołyń, Ukrainian: Волинь, translit. Volýn), is a historic region in Central and Eastern Europe, situated between south-eastern Poland, south-western Belarus, and western Ukraine. While the borders of the region are not clearly defined, the territory that still carries the name is Volyn Oblast, located in western Ukraine. Volhynia has changed hands numerous times throughout history and been divided among competing powers. Important cities include Lutsk, Rivne, Volodymyr-Volynskyi (Volodymyr), Iziaslav, and Novohrad-Volynskyi (Zviahel). After the annexation of Volhynia by the Russian Empire as part of the Partitions of Poland, it also included the cities of Zhytomyr, Ovruch, Korosten.

During the Zbarazh War of 1675, the cloister was besieged by the Turkish Army, who
reputedly fled upon seeing the apparition of the Theotokos (Mother of God)
accompanied with angels and St Job. Numerous Turkish Muslims that witnessed the
event during the siege converted to Christianity afterward. One of the monastery
chapels commemorates this event.

Pliasheva, a village where a Cossack Grave memorial was founded in 1910-1914 to
commemorate the tens of thousands of Bohdan Khmelnytsky’s warriors killed in the
devastating Battle of Berestechko with the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth army in 1651.
The memorial was designed by architect Volodymyr Maksymov around two unique churches.

The St. Michael Church was brought there from the neighboring village Ostriv. It is rightly reckoned
among the best samples of the Ukrainian wooden architecture of the mid-17th century. According to
legend, it is in this temple that Bohdan Khmelnytsky prayed before the tragic battle. The
underground passage runs from the St. Michael Church to the St. George Church. It leads to the
burial vault chapel, where the sarcophagus with Cossacks’ remains is located.

Commonwealth (now part of Ukraine). He led an uprising against the Commonwealth and
its magnates(1648–1654) that resulted in the creation of a state led by the Cossacks of Ukraine. In
1654, he concluded the Treaty of Pereyaslav with the Tsardom of Russia.

Memorial to the Victims of Fascism
Rivne is famous for being the city with tough and tragic fate, which haunted it over the whole history of its existence. However, the darkest pages in city’s history were entered by the 20th century: during the World War II, Rivne’s territory was occupied by the German-fascist invaders and concentration camps, where people were massively annihilated, were created there. After the war, the Memorial to the Victims of Fascism was opened on the territory of the largest of them, in order to commemorate that terrible time.
For almost four years – from August 1941 until February 1944 – Rivne was the capital of the Reichskommissariat Ukraine (the administrative and territorial unit of the Third Reich). During this period three concentration camps functioned within the precincts of the city. Tens of thousands prisoners of war were brought here from different towns and subsequently massively shot or killed in gas chambers. In total, over hundred thousand prisoners of war and civilians were annihilated during
the occupation.
In 1968, as soon as the echo of the war died down, the Memorial to the Victims of Fascism was installed on the place of the largest concentration camp, where the most people were killed. It consists of two meeting on the top concrete steles and four statues of emaciated prisoners at their foot. Prisoners’ figures are deliberately broken and body proportions are deliberately distorted; their faces are twisted with fear, but their eyes call down the last terrible curse upon executioners. Probably made with excessive naturalism, the monument is very impressive and renders all the horrors of the fascist death camps.
