2 | 2018 | Principal’s Report - St Luke’s Grammar School

2018 was a year full of opportunities for students and staff. It was the fifth year of Learning@STLUKE’S and the Class of 2018 achieved outstanding HSC results, demonstrating the impact of becoming students who are able to take ownership of their learning. They demonstrated the dispositions of powerful learners and managed themselves with confidence as they faced their assessments and examinations.

Towards the end of 2018, the School finalised the next Strategic Plan. The Strategic Plan for 2018 to 2022 has five pillars. These pillars build upon the previous plans with a continued focus on providing excellence in learning and a commitment to each student’s well-being. Excellence in learning will see an ongoing commitment to Learning@STLUKE’S with the establishment of the St Luke’s Institute for Learning. The Institute will have a focus on

research on the short-term and long-term impacts of the Learning@STLUKE’S framework. Professor Guy Claxton, from Winchester University in the UK, and Dr Simon Breakspear, from Agile Schools, have both accepted the role of Educational Advisors and will assist with the research being undertaken. The Institute will support staff undertaking further study as well as fund research. In 2018, the Institute’s first Fellowship was awarded to Mr Peter Scott (Assistant Head of Junior School, Bayview Campus)

to research the teaching strategies that support the development of the dispositions that make powerful learners. In 2019 the Institute will host

the 3rd Building Learning Character Conference, building on the work of the first two conferences which shared the teaching and learning practices of St Luke’s with the wider educational sector.

One of the great challenges in education is the impact of technology, which puts knowledge at the fingertips of everyone. It is leading to a loss of expertise and an inability to achieve learning which is deep. Deep learning is defined by learning that sticks. In the age of Google, managing distractions and being able to become absorbed in learning, is increasingly difficult. Students need to be empowered to be able to go deep. They need opportunities in their learning to experience the uncomfortable nature of sticking with something that is difficult to master. Equally, they need to be encouraged to try new things, to have the confidence to go beyond “getting it right”, to having the confidence to see difficulty as an important part of learning. The new Strategic Plan seeks to provide students with opportunities to develop strategies for deeper learning.

Another key pillar from the Strategic Plan is the commitment to each student’s well-being and to their care. Every year when Year 12 students are surveyed, they reflect upon the quality of the relationship they have with their teachers. They frequently say that they feel that their teachers are much more than teachers, they are people who invest in them and believe in them. Equally, one of the more significant findings year-on-year is that the rates of bullying, compared with like schools, is much lower. In fact, this is matched with a strong agreement with the statement that bullying is not tolerated at the School and with there being very clear pathways for resolution. St Luke’s is a supportive and inclusive school. And, what underpins the care of students

is the golden thread of the School’s Christian faith. Seeing every person as an image bearer of God means that each person deserves to be

treated with dignity and respect. It means that each person matters deeply because they matterto the God of the universe who was prepared to become one of us to reconcile us to Himself.

From the School’s faith position much more flows as well. The Biblical injunction to love God and to love one’s neighbour as oneself, leads to seeking opportunities for the students to serve the world. This has seen the establishing of relationships with a number of organisations to provide opportunities for the students to practise the dispositions of kindness, grace, compassion, humility and justice. Students continue to serve at

disabilities, and a range of other ways. In addition, the focus on fundraising for special projects; Bear Cottage, Rough Edges (homeless), Stewart house, the Farmers’ Appeal and Anglicare’s Toys’n’Tucker are just a small snapshot of what is being done. The purpose of these experiences is to give the students the confidence to go out in to the world and make a difference because they have had a chance to see that they have had an impact on the lives of others.

I look forward to welcoming you back in 2019 for a year of learning and growing into being the people God has created and called us to be.

4 | 2018 | Principal’s Report - St Luke’s Grammar School

• INAUGURAL JUNIOR SCHOOL PRODUCTION - “The Lion King, Jr”: Congratulations to our Years 5 & 6 students, from the Dee Why and Bayview Campuses, who performed brilliantly in the first ever Junior School Musical. Senior students also performed in “Alice In Wonderland”, with both productions showcasing the talents of students. A great sense of community was also harnessed with staff and parents working behind the scenes to assist in bringing these amazing performances together.

• FULL STEAM AHEAD - Combined Campus Workshop for Girls: An innovative day of inquiry, hosted by the Bayview Campus, for girls in Years 3-4, designed to help the students to be curious about the wide range of opportunities open to them in STEM fields.

• SKIING SUCCESS at the Inter Schools’ Snow Sports: Congratulations to Dylan, Alex and Nikki McNeil who won Gold medals in their respective Mogul events. St Luke’s were placed 9th overall Primary Ski team in the final results, with over 200 schools competing in the Championships.

• CARING FOR THE COMMUNITY - Elizabeth Jenkins Program: Year 10 students again visited the Elizabeth Jenkins Aged Care Facility. Each student visits The Salvation Army Centre 4 times throughout the year, spending time talking to the residents and playing games. The residents then visit the School for an afternoon tea which includes entertainment and fun.

• CELEBRATING DIVERSITY - Chinese Cultural Day: The Overseas students, together with the Years 7 & 8 Mandarin classes, provided a wonderful display of Asian culture, with singing, dancing and poem recitals.

• BUNDANOON ART CAMP - Years 10 & 11 Visual Arts Excursion: The intensive Art immersion experience provided valuable opportunities for students to improve and refine their art capabilities.

• DEE WHY & BAYVIEW - Book Week: Book Week at St Luke’s is always lots of fun and is aimed at inspiring a love of literature. Some of the events included guest authors presenting to students, a dress up parade (Dee Why), and a Write a Book In a Day competition.

2018 HIGHLIGHTS

• INTERNATIONAL FUTURE PROBLEM SOLVING CONFERENCE: Congratulations to Jade Wilkins (Year 7) who represented Australia in the International Future Problem Solving Conference in the USA. Jade was the Australian Representative in a team of four students from New York, Connecticut and South Carolina. The team was awarded 4th place in the Competition.

• YEAR 2 STEM - Combined Campus Workshop: An excellent opportunity for students from Dee Why and Bayview to work in cross-campus groups to complete a ‘design-and-make’ challenge and to apply their learning in Science and Technology to a new context.

• SAILING SUCCESS - National Achievement: Kalin John (Year 7) crewed in his first Heron Nationals which went over one week in some of the most grueling conditions in Port Stephens. He also participated in his first CHS (Combined High School) Sailing Competition in Lake Macquarie.

• KING OF KAYAKING: Toby Schooley (Year 9) represented Australia at the Asia Pacific Regatta in the Pacific Regatta in Adelaide. Toby placed 2nd (silver) in the K4 500m event and the K2 1,000m, 3rd (bronze) in the K4 1,000m and 6th in the K1 200m.

• CHANGING THE GAME - Bayview: The ‘Game Changer’ initiative was an amazing way to collaborate and think outside the box! Students from Cottage to Year 6 were put into peer support groups to work together to come up with a game. The support leaders (Years 5 & 6) received a mystery box which was then used to create an imaginary game.

• SAFE DRIVING - Ubicar Road Safety Initiative: The Year 12 students participated in a driver education initiative. The program used an App to track and monitor student driving performance over the Term, with Ubicar donating $1,000 to Cassie Hargreaves, the Year 12 student who had the best driving rankings. Cassie very kindly donated the money to The Lighthouse Foundation.

• CARING IN CAMBODIA - Year 10 Service Trip: This was the chance of a lifetime for students to explore the lives of those in need and tackle the issue of poverty in rural areas. The students worked with locals to build up the community and strengthen ties between the villages and outside world.

• SPANISH FIESTA: Students at the Dee Why Campus dressed up as Hispanic celebrities and enjoyed authentic cuisine cooked by an Argentinian family. The ‘did the Macarena’, played a game of soccer and watched a Latin Dance concert. At Bayview, students were treated to a Spanish Cooking lesson from Miguel - who demonstrated just how delicious healthy food can be!

• TOP HONOURS IN BASKETBALL - NSW All Schools Basketball Championship Winners: The Opens Girls Basketball team was crowned State Champions, defeating both the top Catholic school in the State and the top public school. The team has been CIS Champions for the last 3 years, and this year went one step higher winning the All School’s competition. This was an amazing achievement and was indicative of the team work and talent displayed.

• DEBATING WINNERS: The 2018 Debating Season was a successful experience for St Luke’s students, with the Middle Team winning the HICES Competition. ISDA, IPSHA and HICES debaters all developed their debating skills and learnt to face challenges, develop their resilience, think on their feet and learn about modern social and political contexts.

• BEAR PIT SPEAKING COMPETITION - What’s the Buzz’ Winner: Dee Why students participated in the “What’s the Buzz?” public speaking competition. Those who progressed to the last stage of the Competition delivered powerful speeches that brought laughter, tears and thunderous applause from the 400 audience members they bravely addressed. Stage winners were Edie Gillett, Zephyr Lee and Ethan Clack. Congratulations to Zephyr Lee who then went on to win the Northern Beaches Bear Pit Speaking Competition.

• INAUGURAL MANLY JAZZ FESTIVAL PERFORMANCE - and Stage Band Workshop: Students were involved in a Jazz Workshop, run by Carl Allen and Andrew Speight. Carl Allen is a well known Jazz musician, who travelled from the USA to take part in the Manly Jazz Festival. Andrew Speight is currently a Professor of Jazz Studies at San Francisco State University. Mrs Fechner, who is also a key organiser of the Manly Jazz festival was gracious enough to orchestrate the workshops, to help our Stage Band students prepare for their inaugural performance at the Jazz Festival.

• YEAR 2 STRINGS PROGRAM LAUNCH - Bayview: Congratulations to the Year 2 students at Bayview, who participated in the first ever St Luke’s Strings Program. The students performed brilliantly at the Cottage to Year 2 Celebration Concert, having participated in weekly small group tuition throughout the year. The Strings Program is a first step in achieving the Principal’s dream of a first ever St Luke’s Orchestra!

• NEW FURRY FRIEND - and Para Olympic Selection: Benjamin Said was selected to compete in the 5,000m event (Para Open selections) at the Melanesian Regional Championships, held in May 2018. Ben was born with a vision impairment, which during the course of this year has significantly declined, to the point that he is now legally blind. Ben was thrilled though, to have finally been matched with a Guide Dog ‘Jontie’ who will attend all Ben’s classes and activities in 2019.

• HIGHEST EVER DUKE OF EDINBURGH - Gold Participation: A record number of Year 12 students from the Class of 2018 participated in the Gold Duke of Edinburgh award scheme. The 12 students overcame many challenges, acquired new leadership and team collaboration skills and created many memories during the 4 year process.

• WRITE A BOOK IN A DAY - National Winners: The Year 9 WABIAD team were crowned National Champions of the Middle Division (Years 7 - 9). They won the ‘National Best Book’ category, in addition to the ‘NSW Best Book’ category. The WABIAD initiative is to raise money for The Kids Cancer Project.
