Page 3: UK Enterprise tech priorities Q3 2012

Widest expenditure

• Operational IT (security, network, data management) continues to attract investment from 2/3rds – 4/5ths of enterprises. (slide ref: 9)

• Virtualisation of server, storage and desktop continue apace with more than 4 in 5 enterprises continuing to invest in Q3. (slide ref: 15)

• Having optimised their websites for mobile and investing in apps for customers, the next phase in mobility for a growing number is the monetisation of mobile (slide ref: 18)

• The clamour for flexible working sees many organisations continuing to put in place the necessary structure to support this work approach (slide ref: 22)

• Growth in real time analytics by “first time” investors is matched in Q2 and Q3 (slide ref: 26)

Headline findings

Page 4: UK Enterprise tech priorities Q3 2012

Fastest growing technologies

• Private Cloud. Whilst investment appears to have dropped off in Q3, for two quarters, more than 40% of investments will be by new adopters. (slide ref: 9)

• Customer mobility, especially mobile payments. For three quarters, over 50% of investments will be by new adopters. (slide ref: 18)

• Flexible working, especially the provision of tablets and mobile apps for workers, where around half to two-thirds of investments will be by new adopters. (slide ref: 22)

• From a lower base, new technologies such as 3D printing and context-aware computing continue to see 50%+of investment by new adopters. (slide ref: 27)

When in the next 12 months will you invest in these operational technologies?

What is this telling us..? Evidently operational technologies are predominantly a maintained & constant draw on investment. Although Private Cloud continues to look like a slightly longer-term plan in comparison.

Not surprisingly in this category, the percentage of first-time adoption is high, with the acceleration seen in Q2 somewhat maintained. What is this telling us..? Evidence would suggest a “let’s wait and see” mentality, with the majority of those intending to invest planning to do so in more than 6-months’ time. Are analytics – of all kinds – seen as a nice to have or must have..? Is the differentiation or competitiveadvantage message reaching IT..?
