• Secretary of State remains the Marine Planning Authority but delegated most marine planning functions for England marine plans to the MMO.
• Statutory objective ‘contribution to the achievement of sustainable development’. Statutory guidance to MMO published in 2010.
• A description of the marine planning system in England - published in 2011 - to establish a baseline of understanding on how marine planning would be delivered – to be updated based on experience.
What have we learnt so far
• Just started the ‘journey’ and improving practice as we learn and go forward.
• Continue to work with MMO to clarify understanding and interpretation of expectations and the ‘ask’.
• Governance and assurance arrangements.
• Clear separation of roles and responsibilities – between policy and delivery.
• Demonstrate the benefits of marine plans.
