reduction, environmentally friendlytechnologies and behaviors, environ-mental awareness and education, consultation with all stakeholders. Thus the sections concern the orga-nization of the event, noise and fuel, protection of ground and water, behavior of team and spectatorsand action to be taken by the inter-national organizers. To be compliant with the mandatereceived, the EWG support the UIM insigning the agreement with the UNEP,which is the voice for the environ-ment within the United Nationssystem and acts as a catalyst, advocate, educator and facilitator topromote the wise use and sustaina-ble development of the globalenvironment. Thanks to the increased considera-tion that the UIM has gained in recentyears within the Olympic family, theEWG has the opportunity to shareexperiences and information with theother motorsport InternationalFederations, as FIA, FIM, FAI andIWWF, which is a useful platformfor comparison to enhance environ-mental standards and achievements. The EWG is now acting on four mainpathway for “Greening our sport”:• to draw a system of standards anddocuments that can help organizersand NAs to face the increasinglychallenging environmental issues• to develop projects regardingeducation/training/communication• to strengthen the cooperationamong key Institutions• to involve new and motivated GreenPartnersSince the Environment entered in theUIM Agenda, as one of the mainpillar of the President Chiulli's

mandate, we have seen an increasedenvironmental consciousness, aswitnessed by the increasing partici-pation to the EWG meetings schedu-led during the UIM General Assemblyweek, but there is still a long way togo. We are also strongly convincedthat many good experiences havealready been developed inside ourmovement, and we have to stimulatemore and more the communicationinside the UIM in order to valorize thebest practices.

What are the main challenges thatour Sports are currently facingin terms of environment andsustainability?Powerboating is often associatedwith a non-eco-friendly sport butthis is not true. There is room forimprovement and many good thingshave been already done. We simplyneed to better communicate theresults achieved. Because theenvironment is part of our Sport, wedo care about it and we will continueto communicate these principles andvalues to the new generations bycooperating with the Youth Develop-ment Program to define the educa-tional program for the young talents. We are working on giving to theorganizers all the tool, informationand support to avoid problems rela-ted to the acceptability of powerboa-ting events. The environmentalsustainability is more and morewidely recognized as a priority by thecountries hosting our races andwe believe that we can bringenvironmental standards even wherethe green consciousness is not com-pletely developed.

We at the UIM, make it a pointof honor to raise environ-mental performance ofpowerboating and make oursport a vector of environ-mental protection and sustai-nable development. We willcontinue to promote theoptimal use of resources andmaterials, efficient logisticsand transport, continuedreduction of polluting, discharges to water andemissions to air.

The Environmental Award isthe reflection of the valueswe hold. For this reason wecontinue encouraging all ourstakeholders to showcasetheir most original initiativesand their most successfulinnovations in terms ofsustainable eco-friendlytechnologies.

I believe that together, wecan take up these challenges.Together, we can ensure abright future for our Sports.

Can trends point the way to the designof superyachts in the future? MarnixHoekstra and Bart Bouwhuis, directorsof the Dutch design house Vripack, believe that in the right hands theycertainly can. Having completed thou-sands of projects and currentlyemploying 80 people, Vripack isundoubtedly a serious player in theyacht design sector, but with adecidedly fun and creative approach. The story of the studio began in 1961when Dick Boon started designingboats. Now, 53-years later, it has grownto become the most complete designhouse in the world, embracing everysingle discipline of yacht design with7000+ projects successfully completed.Today, Vripack functions as a profes-sional design, engineering and navalarchitecture studio involved in theentire building process. 80-people,

each working within on of the fivedifferent disciplines that make Vripackstand out from the crowd. Vripack’sholistic approach is literally 360-degree.From 23’ pontoon boats to megayachtsand solar powered race craft, thereappears to be no corner of the nauticalsector that Vripack hasn’t reached outand touched. Vripack is never shy of anengineering project that goes wellbeyond a dream and the V20 solar raceris an excellent example. For one this 20 foot boat doesn’t sailbut she flies. Secondly, she is poweredsolely on energy created from the sun.And finally, she is the first one-design-race-boat for a world wide classchallenging each other and theelements in the international racingcircuit.By embracing the trend of creating agreener environment, solar energy isnot the only factor that is important. Thetrick is to use it in the most efficientway. “It is all about hull optimization”says Bart. “That factor alone is far moreimportant than any other green initia-tive, be on these very light solar powe-red yachts or the biggest ofsuperyachts”. Marnix chimes in: “Get thehull right and the consumption will dropdramatically no matter what the size ofyacht”.The V20 highlights how it is the hulldesign that is critical for maximizingrange and speed gained through solar

panels. We realized that if wecreated our own one-classdesign, more and more peoplecould compete and as a result

technology would move faster towardsthe goal of using bigger and biggerengines driven by solar power. Focusing on the power of trends incombination with the expertise from thefield of innovation and scientific deve-lopments is important to Vripack. Bart& Marnix conclude; “It provides us withthe tools to create better boats in lesstime using our holistic approach. Webelieve that we don’t simply designboats, we engineer fantasies and there-fore we feel very honored that this hasbeen acknowledged by the internatio-nal motorboat federation UIM with anaward for greening the sport”.This acknowledgement has brought usgreat pleasure and a lot of recognition.Winning this UIM award is an importantcontribution towards creating a fasterestablishment of what the future holdsfor us in this area and we are verythankful for that.

In July 2014, Monte Carlobecame an arena for the first ever-solar powered boat race to commenceon the open Mediterranean waters;setting the scene for a new era incompetitive powerboat racing.Monaco residents, elite racing enthu-siasts and the “movers & shakers” ofthe solar power industry, gathered atthe brand new Monaco Yacht Club tosupport 23 international racing teams,in a head to head 100% carbon-freenautical solar powered race.‘Solar1 races was created to promotethe use of solar power in our every daylives, which I strongly believe in. I seeit as a great opportunity to animateand excite a new generation, whilstalso focusing their attention onimportant issues such as renewableenergy. I would like our future to be,clean, economical and sustainable.Solar1 moves us all towards agreener, brighter future!’ SergeiDobroserdov, CEO of Solar 1Solar1 is the first of its kind to unitebusinesses and pioneers, driving thefuture of clean energy. Today, theflourishing solar power industryhas an equally powerful event ca-pable of showcasing its remarkabledevelopments and innovations.

Predominantly the racing participantsof the Solar1 Cup, have been that ofthe student variety. These youngadults have chosen to take part in thisas part of their studies, or in manycases, as extra curricular activities, truly demonstrating their passion. These intricately designed vessels areastonishing, and could be easilyperceived to be the works of well esta-blished technological designers andprofessors with years of experience.Teams have come from all around theworld including; Dutch Solar BoatTeam from the Netherlands, Vento SULfrom Brazil, G.U.T Solar from the PolishGDsank University of Technology,Laguna Creek High School from theUSA and YTU Gunes Teknesi-YTU solarboat team from the Turkish YildizTechnical University, to name a few.“If this is what these young studentscan design and achieve now, I amvery excited to see what our futureholds with them at the helm” SergeiDobroserdov, CEO of Solar 1 Solar1 not only creates an excitingplatform for these outstanding deve-lopments of the solar powered indus-try, which in turn will be applied tolarger vessels as the innovations pro-gress, but Solar1 is also an advocateto all green and clean technologies, and invites and incorporates clean techprofessionals and business, to show-case and speak during the event.A solar village and conference is alsoset up during the racing days to dis-play, solar and clean tech products toengage the public on a personal level;encouraging and highlighting theimportance of these clean technolo-gies, and show how they can join in onthe promotion of a cleaner andgreener world.Solar1 prides itself on its mission,

showcasing these technologies andmaking them accessible to everyone. The event is free to attend, and haseasy accessibility into the paddock, where one can be in close proximityto the actual racing teams, allowingyou to speak and learn with theengineers and pilots. Kids solarpowered model races are alsoorganized; children work with theSolar1 team to learn and constructtheir very own miniature solar powe-red vessels, and race against oneanother. Solar1 feels it is important tocreate an event for everyone, andengage all ages in the importance ofthis environmental message.Solar1 wishes to encourage theapplication of solar technology in allareas of industry, but predominatelyin sea vessels due to the high level ofsea pollution that affects our climate, and the habitats of sea animals. Solar1whom received a Green Patronagefrom The UIM, Environmental WorkingGroup, acts as the facilitator tospread, highlight and engage compa-nies, leaders, experts, cities andpolicy-makers toward this environ-mentally friendly worldwide goal, thatwill in turn benefit all. As a paperless and recyclablecompany, Solar1 choose to opttowards environmentally friendlyproducts where possible, and takeinto account its actions in the organi-zation of each event.2014 has been an amazing launchyear for this innovative race, and willcontinue on in 2015, from the 9th-11th July at the Yacht Club de Monaco.23 International teams have alreadyconfirmed their participation. 2015 isset to be an even bigger and betteryear for Solar1, so join the race.

Creation and evolution of the Wood Forever PactThe Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation has beencommitted to fighting deforestation since its creation. Thepreservation of the tropical rainforests enables action to betaken in the Foundation's three priority focus areas: fightagainst climate change, protection of biodiversity and accessto water. After an extensive study concerning the various environ-mental issues generated by the yachting sector, the Foun-dation chose to focus its action on wood, a key componentin yacht construction. The various types of wood foundaboard are selected for their technical, mechanical andaesthetic qualities. Teak, mahogany, ebony... these tropicalwoods are used for decks and exterior fittings, as well asfor the interior decor and furniture. In 2010, the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation launchedthe Wood Forever Pact with the aim of helping yacht builderswith an approach to use timber harvested from sustainablymanaged forests. The MYS, due to its status as a key inter-national yacht show and its objective to combine luxury withrespect for the environment, quite naturally decided to teamup with the Foundation.Over the years, the programme has developed and openedup to professions linked to the yachting world that use oradvocate wood such as designers, furniture manufacturersand timber suppliers, with the aim of setting up a network. This union of professionals will have a leverage effect on thewood supply chain, which will result in a more environmen-tally friendly tropical wood offer and make super yachts theenvironmental flagship of the shipping industry.

How to get involved in the Wood Forever Pact Suppliers of wood, furniture makers and designers who careabout deforestation now have the opportunity to make areal difference to the environment by becoming Partners ofWood Forever Pact. By respectively selling certified wood, introducing a range of furniture from certified sources orspecifying certified woods on your designs, you canbenefit from the Foundation’s communications, and get intouch with specialists regarding your technical questionsrelated to wood. The annual contribution of the WoodForever Pact Partnership is 100€. Superyacht Builders who care about deforestation have theopportunity to make a real difference to the environment bybecoming Members of Wood Forever Pact (WFP), theflagship project of the “Monaco makes a commitmentagainst deforestation” initiative, led by the Prince Albert II ofMonaco Foundation.

The WFP Member ‘deal’ is simple and straightforward.Builders who sign up for membership of Wood Forever Pactcommit to look for certified wood whenever possible in theprocess of yacht building. They also benefit from WoodForever Pact technical partners, The Forest Trust (TFT) andthe ATIBT (International Technical Association for TropicalWood), expertise.WFP, ATIBT and TFT’s aim is to accompany and assist yachtbuilders in their own aims to use timber from sustainablymanaged forests – builders can choose to show potentialclients their values, transparency and transformationthrough improvements.WFP Members can fly the Wood Forever Pact flag on theirnew builds at launch and use the Prince Albert II Foundationlogos on their marketing material. WFP members alsobenefit from WFP communications and introductions to WFPPartners (suppliers, furniture makers, designers). The mem-bership fee of the Wood Forever Pact is 3500€ for two years. The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation guarantees allcontributions are 100% used for projects and communica-tions (includes listing on site and in newsletter) withoutmanagement overheads being deducted.

VSY, the first European Member of the Wood Forever PactVSY, the UIM Green Partner but also the first EuropeanMember of the Wood Forever Pact, joined forces with thePrince Albert II of Monaco Foundation in 2012 and strives forsustainability in all aspects of yacht building. VSY has beenactively working with The Forest Trust, a technical partner ofthe Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, to create acartography of its wood supply chain. A lot of efforts have been made on their side to implementa Special Code of Conduct for their wood chain to supportsustainable forest management and safeguard rich biodi-versity in forest operations. To this aim, their target is tosustain the high amount of certified wood in their yachtproduction at over 80%. VSY responsibility covers a widerange of sustainability issues from the preservation ofnature values and legal origin of the wood to social issuessuch as safety at work.

UIM EQUALITY COMMITTEE “Yes, we care”

As an International Federation fullyrecognized by the IOC, there was nodoubt that the UIM was needing anEquality Committee. But what doesEquality Committee have to do withMotorboat Sport? Focus on a commit-tee that cares for all.

What is equality Committee? The Equality Committee is a newlycreated Committee discussed andratified by the 2013 General Assemblyin Auckland. Its Members have beenappointed by the Council held in Milanlast June 2014. It was a great pleasure and honor forme to be appointed Chairwoman ofthis Committee and to chair the firstmeeting which took place in Ibiza du-ring the last UIM General Assembly. All the members appointed by theCouncil attended the meeting and Iam very proud of that because itmeans that all of us have understoodthe significance of our task and havethe right enthusiasm to start to work.

What is the Equality Committeemission? Equality Committee has been createdin response to the growing publicinterest in sports practice an d to thedevelopment of the trend in

health/fitness and physical/sportactivity. The most important aimof the Equality Committee is to en-courage and support the efforts anddevelopments disseminating thehealth and social benefits to be gai-ned by all members of society throughregular physical/sport activity.Equality Committee has the role to es-tablish guidelines for Sport For Allstrategy, this is why we tried to iden-tify during our first meeting, how tofight any form of discrimination, howto encourage and support the promo-tion of women in sport at all levelswith a view to implementing the prin-ciple of gender equality and, above all,how to encourage and support thedevelopment of Sport For All.During our discussions some coun-tries as Italy, Latvia, New Zealand andPortugal mentioned that they hadamong their National Authorities peo-ple with different capacities involvedin boating and aquabike activities, thisis why we have set ourselves thechallenge to develop for 2015,the number of National Authoritiesinvolved in this activity. One of our main ambition is also toencourage the creation of the first“SPORT FOR ALL AWARD”. The nextEquality Committee meeting will be

the occasion to write the relevant rulesto be submitted to the Council for itsapproval. The Equality Committee also intendsto organize in 2015, the first NationalMotorboat meeting for people withdifferent capacities. This meetingwould be the opportunity for anyoneto get closer of the Sport For Allmeaning. We know that there is a lot of work todo but I did understand during ourmeeting that all of us, members ofEquality Committee are not scaredabout that … actually, this is quite thecontrary! This is an agreeablechallenge that we will meet with greatpassion. Strongly inspired by the UIM“YES WE CARE” principle, we will doour best to defend and guaranteeSport For All.We will bring this principle whereverthere will be a motorboat race so wecould also have in the same event a“race” for people with different capa-cities … Oh yes we are aware this is abig dream we have but … why not? I take this opportunity to thank theUIM President for his support duringthe first meeting of Equality Commit-tee and last but not least I wish tothank all the Components of EqualityCommittee, Mr. Sami Abu Shaikha

(form Qatar), Mrs. AnaMonica Mateus Leo-nardo (from Portugal),Mrs. Denise Preece(from New Zealand),Mrs. Mette BrandtBjerknaes (from Nor-way), Mrs. NadezhdaPylaeva (form Russia),Mrs. Ieva Taunina (fromLatvia), Mrs. Alyona Go-lovkova (from Belarus)and Mrs. Gerde HolmeLarsson (from Sweden).

What better way to put the “Sport atthe center” than through the voices ofits athletes. Focus on the first evermeeting of the newly created AthletesCommittee, chaired by a great po-werboating athlete, Marit Stromoy. During this year’s UIM GeneralAssembly meeting in Ibiza we had thefirst ever Athletes Committeemeeting. The Committee consists ofDuarte Benavente (Portugal), AlbertoPascali (Italy), Evgeny Erukhimov(Russia), Pal Virik Nilsen (Noway) andmyself, Marit Stromoy (Noway). Allactive athletes in Offshore, Aquabikeand Circuit racing. Our first meeting was open to all andattracted a lot of people among them,Council members, members ofvarious committees, promoters,National Authorities, etc. We wereall pretty clear that the AthletesCommittee must not be an alibi onpaper, but a committee with realpower in decision-making processeswithin the UIM. To do so, the Athlete committee wasencouraged by President Chiulli tofollow the work of the other commit-tees and to be a part of Councilmeeting and other key committees

such as Offs-hore Commit-tee (Cominoff),InternationalT e c h n i c a lCommission(Comintech),Aquabike andSafety Com-mittees. Thisgave to theCommitteem e m b e r sa n d a l lathletes au n i q u eopportu-nity to fol-low theprocess ofthe rule proposals, calendars and the future of oursports. The Athletes committee alsohad the authority to make their ownrule proposals for future GeneralAssemblies. The first Athletes Committee meetingwas the occasion to discuss theworkplan and current issues to whichpriority should be given. We identifiedthat the main priority is to find aforum where licensed drivers from allover the world could meet anddiscuss factual and upcoming issuesregarding our sports from an athlete’s

point of view.In the futurewe would alsolike to contri-bute ourexpertise andexperience tothe rulechanges, secu-rity matters andto further enrichthe Sportsimage. We willmainly workopenly with otherdrivers throughthe variousleading represen-tatives. The goal isclear: to speak onbehalf of theathletes to make

the powerboating sport ever betterand more attractive for us drivers, sponsors, media and fans. There aremany things we want to work with, but it is important to take one thingat a time. Our reason to sit in acommittee is first and foremost toensure that the athletes' interests areprotected in a relatively heavy advisedsystem. The drivers are directlyinvolved in the sport and it's essentialfor us to be heard in all matters thatconcern us.

More about: Fred Hauenstein, newly appointedUIM Vice-President

After his appointment as UIMVice-President during last GeneralAssembly held on October 26th inIbiza, the UIM makes the point onFred Hauenstein great career andinvolvement within the UIM.

Have you always had a connection toPowerboating Sports ?I was born into a powerboat racingfamily and started racing outboardsmyself at the age of 16. My “O” classcareer highlight was winning the UIM’sJohn Ward Trophy. I progressed toprofessional racing, becoming thefactory team driver for the JohnsonOutboard Company and winning theParker, Arizona seven-hour endurancerace as well as other top events. In mymany years involved in the sport,I have managed race engine develop-ment programs, race teams and thedevelopment of future race drivers.I have designed and developedequipment for and performance ofoutboard racing boats, inboard hydrosincluding Unlimiteds, and offshoreracing engines and boats. I am stillracing small outboard hydroplanes, enjoying doing so with my sons andplanning to do so with my grandchil-dren in the near future.

What led you do the Vice Presidencyof the UIM ?I first attended an actual UIM meetingin 1979, when the HQ was in Brussels.

As an engineer for an enginemanufacturer, my interestwas in the UIM’s technicalneeds, and I became amember of Comintech tofurther UIM’s goals throughunderstanding of technical problemsand rule development. In 1993 I was elected to a four-yearterm as President of the AmericanPower Boat Association and therebybecame a member of the UIM Council, and for the first time saw the ‘innerworkings’ of the UIM. From thatexperience, I realized there was a needfor strong leadership in the SportsCommission to maintain our high levelof support for the actual racersinvolved in our sport. I was electedPresident of Cominsport and, as aconsequence, became a second-tiermember of the UIM Council. In 2012 I was elected to full member-ship on the UIM Council, and now havebeen elected the Vice President of theUIM. I am very proud of the fact thatthe UIM Council feels that I cansupport the development of the aimsof the UIM towards growth and stabi-lity for the future of powerboat racingand our member nations.

What are your aspirations forPowerboating ? My vision for the future of the UIM is aunion that retains its influence andencourages expansion of powerboatracing on the world-wide stage. Wemust develop more, and moreattractive, entry-level opportunities for

external communication of theexcitement and attractiveness ofour sport. We need to create linksbetween other boating and motorracing activities. Most importantly, we mustcontinuously develop and enforceimproved safety rules. This area isvery important to the growth of oursport because few are attracted toa sport that could cause life-alte-ring injury; and potential sponsorsdo not want to be associated withsuch a sport. We must support the professionalside of our sport through develop-ment of future racers and raceofficials because they support ourgoals as we do theirs. The profes-sional series of UIM races are asource of publicity that promotesour sport and attracts potentialfuture participants: racers, spon-sors, national authorities andofficials. In return, their financialsupport of the UIM is essential toboth of our successes.I thoroughly enjoy working with themany people that are the heart ofthe UIM and hope to continue formany more years. I thank the Coun-cil for their faith in me by electingme to the Vice Presidency.
