description

Art matters at UHCL. The pieces were juried and the effort resulted in a collection that contains a variety of mediums including photography, fiber, acrylic, watercolor and oil. The artwork was created by Pearland residents, UHCL students, UHCL alumni, TAACCL members and Alvin Community College employees. The collection celebrates art and creativity, enhances the campus aesthetic, and recognizes the artists.

– a certain breathing room for the spirit. — John Updike

Whatever art offeredthe men and women of previous eras,

what it offers our own, it seems to me, is space

Inspired by the spirit of creative expression, University of Houston-Clear Lake believes in and supports programs that expose both students and the community to new ideas and mediums that foster creativity and a sense of community. In short, art matters at UHCL.

In addition, art matters at UH-Clear Lake Pearland Campus as well. To this end, UHCL made it a priority to interject art into the new Pearland campus by establishing the UH-Clear Lake Pearland Campus Founding Collection of Art.

This collection is a natural extension of Pearland’s artistic community, the cornerstone of which is the Pearland Art League, established with the support of Pearland Mayor Tom Reid.

Leveraging the community’s interest in art, the university reached out to artists in Pearland and its surrounding communities to obtain works of art that reflect the artistic spirit of the area. Artists from Pearland, The Arts Alliance Center at Clear Lake, UHCL, UHCL Pearland Campus, Alvin Community College, San Jacinto College-South, and public and private high schools in Pearland were encouraged to submit pieces for consideration.

People become exposed to and involved with art in numerous ways – most importantly through art appreciation and artistic expression and creation. Art exhibitions and collections in particular offer opportunities for art appreciation to entire communities. This form of involvement not only benefits the individual, as he or she is challenged cognitively to interpret art, but the public as well, as social networks are built around the shared art experience.

Since its inception in 1974, University of Houston-Clear Lake has demonstrated its commitment to the arts and art appreciation. Year after year, the university hosts exhibits of fine art from the local community and around the world. From the annual art show and sale; exhibits of student, alumni and community art in the gallery; to international initiatives like UHCL Art Consortium, UHCL art programming allows students, faculty and community members here and abroad to enrich their lives through the profound beauty of art.

I am pleased to add the UH-Clear Lake Pearland Campus Founding Collection of Art to this list. The collection reflects the university’s continued commitment to the arts. It is a collection that uniquely reflects the artistic spirit of the community in which it is permanently exhibited. And, it provides access to art to those visiting the UH-Clear Lake Pearland Campus – access for some who might otherwise not be exposed to the exceptional pieces exhibited here.

Art matters at University of Houston-Clear Lake, and now at UH-Clear Lake Pearland Campus.
