Installing the Charge Cradle
1. PlugtheACadaptorintotherearofthechargecradleandintothe mainspower.
2. PlacetheUH038SX-2NBintothechargecradle.Thechargelightwill comeontoindicatetheunitischarging.
3. BeforeoperatingtheUH038SX-2NB,chargethebatterypackfor 16hours.

Getting Started
Belt Clip
To attach the belt clip:Slidethebeltclipuntilitsnapsintoplace.
To remove the belt clip:Toremovethebeltclip,pressandholdbeltcliplocker,slidethebeltclipatthesametimeuntilreleased.
Low Battery Alert
Ifthebatterylevelbecomeslow,thebatteryindicatoricononthedisplaybeginsflashing.Whenthebatteriesintheunitarelow,theunitwillgointoabatteryLowmode.TheTransmitmodeisdisabled.ReplacethealkalinebatteriesimmediatelyorifyouareusingtheNiMHbatterypack,placetheradioonthechargecradletorecharge.Fullchargewilltakeupto16Hrs.
Back Light
TheUH038SX-2NBhasanautomaticdisplaybacklightwhichremainsonfor10secondsafterakeypress(allkeysexceptPTTkey).Thebacklightwillworkevenifthekeypadislockedbutwillnotworkduringlowbatteryalertmode.

3. PressCH / HI / LOkeymomentarilytoexitchannel selectmode.Ifnokeyispressedwithin5secthe UH038SX-2NBwillexitfromthechannelselectmode.
To Transmit and ReceiveTheUH038SX-2NBusestheUHF-CBChannels(Channels 22 and 23 are for telemetry andtelecommand applications. Transmit isinhibited on these channels).1. Beforeyoutransmit,listenforactivityonthe selectedchannel.2. Whenthechannelisclear,pressandholdthePTTkeytotransmit. TXiconappearsonthedisplay.Holdtheradiowithmicrophoneapproximately5cminfrontofyourmouthwiththeantennaatapproximately45°angleawayfromyourhead.Speakinaclear,normalconversationalvoice.
3. Whenyouhavefinishedspeaking,releasethePTTandlistenfora response.TX iconthendisappearsonthedisplay.Whilereceiving, theRX iconisdisplayed.
Transmit Hi/Lo Power SelectPressandholdCH / HI / LOkeytoselectdesiredtransmitlevel.HI iconwillappearonthedisplayformaximumtransmitlevel.LO iconwillappearonthedisplayforminimumtransmitlevel.TheRFtransmitpoweroftheUH038SX-2NBisselectablebetween0.7/0.5W.

Automatic Squelch FeatureTheUH038SX-2NBisequippedwithanAutomaticSquelchSystemwhichshutsoffweaktransmissionsandunwantednoise.
MonitorThisfeatureenablesuserstolistenforweaksignalsonthecurrentchannelatthepressofakey.
To use monitor1. PressMONkey.TheRX iconwillflash.2. Releasewithin1.5secondsandtheunitexits Monitormode.
3. PressandholdMON keyfor2secondsforcontinuouslistening. Thereceivercircuitwillstayopen,lettinginboththenoise&weak signals.TheRX iconflashesinthisstatus.4. ToreturntonormalReceivemodepressMONkey.TheRX icon disappearsorstopsflashinginthisstatus.
ScanningThescanfunctionscansallchannelswhicharestoredintheSCANCHANNELMEMORYandstopsatanactivechannel.IfaPRIORITYchannelhasbeenselectedthenthischannelwillbemonitoredforactivityevery3seconds.Whenthesignalstops,theUH038SX-2NBwaits2seconds(ReplyDelay)beforescanningresumes.
To initiate scanning;1. PressMEM / SCNkeymomentarilytobegin scanning. TheSCANiconisdisplayed.
2. PressSELECT / ,MEM / SCN, /CALL or PTT keytocancel.Whenscanstopsatabusychannel,pressingCH / HI / LOkeywillresumescan.

Reply DelayWhilescanning,theUH038SX-2NBstopsatabusychannelandreceivesatransmission.Whenthereceivedsignalisover,theunitwillwaitfor2secondsforthereturnofthesignal,otherwise,theradioresumesscanning.
To Operate in Duplex Mode (Repeaters)TheDuplexfunctionenablesyoutoaccesslocalrepeaterstations.YoucanonlyactivateDuplexfromCH01-CH08andCH41-CH48.
UHFCBRepeatersareusedtoretransmitorrelayyoursignal.Repeaterswillextendtherangeofyourradioandovercometheshieldingeffectcausedbysolidobstructions.

OperationCTCSS & DCS(Continuous Tone Coded Squelch System) & (Digital Coded Squelch)CTCSSisafeaturethatallowsagrouptotalktoeachotherwithouthearingotherusersonthesamechannel.
1. PressSELECT / keymomentarilytoenterCTCSS mode.ThecurrentselectedCTCSStoneflashes.
2. Press keytoselecttherequiredCTCSS tone(OFFor1-38).
3. PressSELECT / keysixtimestoconfirmthe selectedsettingandexittostandbymode.
ForchannelswithaCTCSStonesetting,theCTCSStoneisdisplayedbelowthechannelindicator.ForchannelswiththesettingofCTCSSOFF,therewillbenodisplaybelowthechannelindicator.
DCSisadigitalextensionofCTCSS.Itprovides104extra,digitallycoded,squelchcodesthatfollowafterthe38CTCSScodes.CTCSS1-38,followedbyDCS1-99plusDCS100-104(representedbyo0-o4onthedisplay).

2. Use keytoselectaDCScode.TheDCScodes followonaftertheCTCSScodes.TheDCSiconwill replacetheCTCSScodeonthedisplay.

VOXVOXistheautomatictransmittingfunctionbyinputtingvoiceintotheVOXheadsetmicwithoutpressingthePTTkey.
1. PressSELECT / keymomentarilytwicewhilein standbymodetoenterVOXSensitivitymode.The currentselectedVOXsettingwillflashonthedisplay.2. Press or keytoadjusttheVOXsensitivity.1is thehighestsensitivityand4isthelowestsensitivity. VOXcanbeturnedoffbyselectingOFicon.3. PressSELECT / keyfivetimestoconfirmthe settingandexittostandbymode.
TheVOXiconisshownonthedisplaywhenVOXisselectedtoonandtheVOXHeadsetispluggedintoVOXHeadsetJack.TheTXiconblinkswhenthevoicelevelispossibletotransmitatthecurrentselectedVOXsensitivitylevel.
Transmitting a Call ToneYourUH038SX-2NBradioisequippedwith5selectablecalltonesthatwillbetransmittedwhenthe /CALL keyispressedmomentarily.To select a call tone:
1. PressSELECT / keymomentarilythreetimes whileinstandbymodetoenterCallTonemode.The currentcalltonenumber(C1-C5)willbeindicated.2. Pressthe or keytoselectdesiredcalltone. Eachtonewillbeheardthroughthespeaker.3. PressSELECT / keyfourtimestoconfirmandexittostandbymode. Totransmittheselectedcalltone,pressthe /CALL key. Theselectedtonewillautomaticallybetransmittedforafixedlength oftime.CallTonewillbecancelledwhenthePTTkeyispressed.
NOTE
Currentregulationsrequirecallingtonestoberestrictedtoonetransmissionperminute.Ifasecondtransmissionisattemptedwithinoneminutethenanerrortonewillsound.

PressSELECT / threetimestoconfirmandexit tostandbymode.PRIwillbedisplayedwhena prioritychannelhasbeenselected.
BCL (Busy Channel Lockout) On/OffBCLisusedwhenCTCSSorDCSisselectedtopreventtransmissionwhentheUH038SX-2NBdetectsatransmissionfromanotherunitusingthesameCTCSSorDCScode.
To set BCL ON/OFF:
1. PressSELECT / momentarilyfivetimeswhilein standbymodetoenterBCL ON / OFFmode. ThecurrentBCLstatuswillbeindicated.2. Press or keytoselectON(on)orOFF(oF).3. PressSELECT / twotimestoconfirmandexitto standbymode.BCLwillbedisplayedwhenBCLon hasbeenselected.
Scan Channel MemoryTo store a channel into Scan Channel Memory:
1. SelectdesiredchannelusingCH / HI / LOkeyand or key.2. PressandholdMEM / SCNkey.MEMwillappearonthedisplay.

Important information - 80 Channel UHF-CB channel expansionToprovideallusersadditionalchannelcapacitywithintheUHF-CBBand.TheACMAwillchangethemajorityofthecurrentwideband40channelusetonarrowbandchanneluse.Thisallowsforadditionalchannelstobeadded,upto80(77usable)Channels.Thissimplymeansthatthenewnarrowbandradioyouhavepurchasedwillhavemorechannelsthanolderradios.Pleaserefertotheguidelinesaboveandthechannelchartforfurtherchannelinformation.AlistofcurrentlyauthorisedchannelscanalsobeobtainedfromtheACMAwebsiteinAustraliaandtheMEDwebsiteinNewZealand.Interference / Poor AudioWhenanewnarrowbandradioreceivesasignalfromanolderwidebandradiothespeechmaysoundloud.NarrowbandradiosoperatingonCH41-CH80mayencounterinterferencefromanearbywidebandradiostransmittingonhighpoweronanadjacentchannel(frequency).Whenanolderwidebandradioreceivesasignalfromanewnarrowbandradiothespeechmaysoundquiet-thewidebandradiousersimplyadjuststheirradiovolumeforbestperformance.Theabovesituationsarenotafaultoftheradiobutasymptomofmixedwidebandandnarrowbandradiosincurrentuse.Itisexpectedthatasolderwidebandradiosarephasedoutthisissuewillbeeliminated.
