UH EnginEEring stUDEnts DEvElop MEntorsHip prograM at CastlE HigH sCHool
The UH Mānoa College of Engineering haslaunched a new academic mentorship andcoaching program, EngineeringHI, inpartnership with James B. Castle High Schoolin Kāne‘ohe to create a bridge between highschool and college students, allowing high-performing undergraduates to connect with andmentor high schoolers benefiting from extraassistance in math, science, and engineeringclasses on a nearly peer-to-peer level.
Project overview
EngineeringHI, a pilot project made possibleby a nearly $27,000 Harold K.L. CastleFoundation grant, was created this spring andemploys a select group of outstandingengineering students from the University ofHawai‘i at Mānoa’s College of Engineering toprovide one-to-one academic coachingsessions via Zoom to high school students fromCastle High School in STEM subjects includingalgebra, trigonometry, pre-calculus, physics, chemistry, and more. Through resourcesavailable via UH’s Online Learning Academy(OLA) Program, tutors have been trained inbuilding relationships with students and inteaching relevant content in a way that isaccessible.
The College has leveraged its EngineeringStudent Ambassadors, a group of top-performing engineering students who aretrained to provide outreach to our local schoolsand mentor/advise fellow students, as well asstudents from its student engineeringorganizations and other qualified individuals, tooffer a new approach to tutoring andmentorship. 12 EngineeringHI mentors arecurrently on staff, many working with studentsover the summer to support those taking mathclasses in June and July. The pilot program willrun through September 30, 2021, and after thatdate, program administrators will seek to extendthe program and make it permanent by securingoutside funding and possibly expanding itsreach in the future by bringing in additionaleducational partners.
Goals and projected outcomes
“We have been very intentional inestablishing this program as a specialopportunity afforded to Castle students,” saidKim Perez Hults, program supervisor andDirector of Marketing and Outreach Relationsfor the College. “Our tutors are introduced as‘engineering mentors.’ In addition to providingtraditional tutoring on individual classes, somesessions may also be reserved for working withstudents in a true mentorship capacity onacademic challenges. Castle teachers haveidentified a need for mentorship with areas suchas: guiding students with STEM-relatedprojects and brainstorming concepts forscience fairs, providing students with feedbackon STEM projects and presentations, andoffering special sessions including teacher-requested content reviews.”
Over the course of the 7-month program, organizers project they will be able to serveover 150 students and deliver over 1,500 hoursof intensive STEM tutoring. Additionally, theyaim to demonstrate a measurable improvementin participants’ understanding andcomprehension of target subjects andconcepts, as evidenced by pre-and post-tutoring surveys administered to tutees and/ortheir teachers and tutors, and provide relevant, meaningful employment to participatingundergraduate engineering students, empowering them as mentors to their youngercounterparts and providing them with arewarding experience as evidenced throughtheir post-program survey feedback.
Partners in education
Castle High School and the College ofEngineering are no strangers to collaboration –the two institutions have in fact worked closelytogether over the years, including as partnersin the current Hawai‘i Engineering SectorPartnership involving K-12, college, andindustry partners as well as the Chamber ofCommerce Hawai‘i. This program serves tobuild on those efforts and bolster student
learning in science and math to prepare themfor college and the workforce.
“Our goal is to ensure that students areprepared for the academic rigor of anypostsecondary program in the field of STEM,”said Castle High School Principal BernadetteTyrell. “This summer, Castle engineeringstudents will receive support from a mentor.Successful completion of higher-level mathrequirements will help students better align withUH Mānoa College of Engineering certificationand degrees.”
Engineering Dean Brennon Morioka isappreciative of the unique opportunity todevelop such a program and has high hopesfor the outcome. “We are extremely grateful tothe Castle Foundation for having the confidencein the College of Engineering in providingmentorship to our Castle High Schoolcommunity,” said Morioka. “And this is a greatway for our own students to learn andunderstand their own responsibility asengineers and as leaders of the importance ofnot only being a part of a greater community butalso lead in Hawaii’s efforts.”
Three engineering student ambassadors turned high school mentors from the College of Engineering.
