Dear Colleagues, It is with pleasure that we invite you to the 7th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Urogynaecological Society of Australasia (UGSA) to be held in Auckland from Wednesday 9th – Sunday 13th March 2016.

Following the unprecedented success of our last ASM and various workshops; it is now more obvious than ever that there is a growing need for evidence-based medicine teaching as well as hands on practical training in urogynaecology in Australasia. As a result, UGSA has combined both aspects of clinical education in our upcoming Annual Scientific Meeting. Not only have we invited key opinion leaders from

various corners of the world to provide state of the art lectures, discussion forums and debates but there will also be an interesting array of workshops/courses for delegates to learn how to repair anal sphincter injuries & perform laparoscopic colposacropexy as well as a one day urogynaecology course designed for RANZCOG trainees and interested specialists.

UGSA has been blessed with the generosity from industry and our trainers/teachers, and will continue to deliver education in an affordable manner. All we ask of you is to spread the word around to your colleagues and trainees; and make this event as successful as possible.

A/Professor Moalli, Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology & Reproductive Sciences, University of Pittsburgh, Division of Urogynaecology & Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery,

    Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC.

Her research is in the general area of pelvic floor dysfunction. Specifically, she is interested in determining the biological basis for the increased incidence of pelvic organ prolapse following menopause. She has focused on differences in connective tissue remodelling between pre- and postmenopausal women.

Dr. Moalli is developing a model to test the structural properties of the supportive connective tissue of the vagina. The goal of the lab is to design therapies that strengthen pelvic floor support and decrease the incidence of pelvic organ prolapse.

    ProFeSSor JoHn De LAnCey (USA)

Prof. De Lancey is Director of the Pelvic Floor Research Group at the University of Michigan and the Norman F. Miller Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Professor of Urology in the University of Michigan Medical School. He and his research team have made important discoveries concerning the basic causal mechanisms involved in the prevalent and distressing conditions known as female pelvic floor disorders.

Prof. De Lancey along with Ashton-Miller, and their trainees have elucidated the structural mechanics of factors responsible for the connective tissue, muscle, and neural mechanisms involved in these highly prevalent, long neglected, and stigmatizing conditions. In addition, they have examined the remarkable biomechanics of vaginal birth injury that is the dominant cause of incontinence and prolapse. This research resulted in important discoveries about the fundamental biomechanics of pelvic floor disorders as well as the factors involved in birth-related pelvic floor injury that have won many national and international awards.

    ProFeSSor LInDA CArDozo oBe (UK)

Professor Cardozo heads a busy and productive tertiary referral urogynaecology department at King’s College Hospital. She has a large clinical workload dealing with complex urogynaecological problems in a supra-regional tertiary referral unit teaching medical students, training junior doctors and undertaking clinical research.

Her publications include more than 350 original papers in peer review journals, 21 books and 120 book chapters. She is a member of the Editorial Board of 12 Scientific Journals.

She is currently Co-Chairman of the World Health Organisation International Consultation on Incontinence, International Fellows Representative on the Council of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists where she has also sat on numerous committees.

Build your own pelvis: Hands-on clay pelvic anatomy workshop

    oASIS Symposium

    5

Dr Louise Tomlinson, Dr Sylvia Lin, Dr Vivien Wong Wednesday 9th March, 8.30am – 12.30pm Advanced Surgical Skills Centre, Mercy Hospital, 98 Mountain Road, Epsom, Auckland 20 $600AUD

Obstetric anal sphincter disruption is a major cause of anal incontinence. There is compelling evidence that clinicians are inadequately trained to recognise & repair the anal sphincter. This workshop is essential for all doctors practising obstetrics and repairing perineal tears.

Topics include:· Applied anatomy· Recognition and classification of OASIS· Discussion regarding preventative risk reducing strategies· Repair techniques & video demonstrations· Postpartum care and management of subsequent delivery.· Practical Lab with hands on experience A practical lab includes repairing pig anal sphincters and Abdul Sultan’s latex anal sphincter model. Each participant will use both models to repair an anal sphincter injury under close supervision.

Dr Oliver Daly, A/Prof Malcolm Frazer, Dr Chris Barry, Dr Vivien Wong, Dr Kris Cvach Wednesday 9th March, 1.30pm – 5.00pm Pullman Hotel, Auckland - Corner Princes Street and Waterloo Quadrant, Auckland 20 $250AUD

Would you like to gain a better understanding of pelvic anatomy by building your own pelvis? This practical workshop will provide a theoretical and practical approach to learning pelvic anatomy.

The workshop will comprise an afternoon session commencing with an overview of pelvic structures and supports. Pairs of participants will then work together to build a pelvis using clay and other materials starting with the bony pelvis. Participants will identify bony landmarks of the pelvis and upper femur, the obstetric dimensions and clinical correlates. They will identify the attachments and build the ligamentous structures, muscle groups, pelvic organs and nerves that comprise the pelvis resulting in a complete pelvis enabling visualisation from an abdominal and perineal perspective.
