Everyuniversitycampushasthem–reveredandremarkablepointsofpride.AcampusthesizeoftheUniversityofGeorgia(asturdy389buildingson759sprawlingacres)boastsabevyofsuchspots,butamongthoseareafewthatstandout,pushedtotheforefrontbyhistoryandprominence.TheyarethesymbolsandlandmarksthatmakeUGAfamiliarfromafar.

thE archIf you walk under The Arch as a freshman, legend has it you’ll never graduate.

SittingatthefrontofNorthCampus,acrossfromthebustleofdowntownAthensonthecornerofBroadStreetandCollegeAvenue,thewrought-ironArchwascommissionedin1858andpatternedaftertheonelocatedonGeorgia’sGreatSeal.Arepre-sentationofthestateconstitution,TheArch’scolumnsrepresentwisdom,justiceandmoderation.It’sincorporatedintotheofficialuniversitylogoanditsimageisseenonjustaboutanythingtheuniversityproduces.Originallyitheldheavygatesthatwereclosedtosecurethecampus,buttheydisappearedsometimearound1885.In1946,twoelectriclightswereaddedtothetop,anditwasmovedaboutsixfeetawayfromthestreet.

Accordingtolegend,universityalumnusDanielHuntleyRed-fearn(Classof1910)arrivedinAthensintheearly1900swithonlyatrunk,asuitcaseandlessthan$200.AsheapproachedTheArchforthefirsttime,hevowedhewouldnotwalkunderituntilhehadadiplomainhand.Hekepthisword,evenasafresh-manhazingritualcalledforhimtorunwithclassmatesunderTheArchinhisunderwearbeforetheGeorgiaTechfootballgame(Heranwithhisclassmates,butranaroundTheArch).

WalkthroughTheArchandthegreenspaceopensup,dottedbyoakandelmtrees,surroundedbybuildingsmarkingUGA’sbegin-nings.PasttheHolmes/HunterAcademicBuildingstandsDemosthe-nianHall(1824),ameetingspotformembersoftheDemosthenianLiterarySociety,asocietyfoundedin1803forthepromotionofextemporaneousspeaking.In1820,somemembersbrokewiththesocietyandformedthePhiKappaLiterarySociety,simplyknownbyDemostheniansasthe“Societyacrosstheway.”PhiKappaHall’s(1836)firstflooronceservedastheuniversity’sfirstrealgymnasiumin1888.DuringtheCivilWar,thebuildingwasconvertedbyfederaltroopsintotheheadquartersfortheprovost-marshalgovernment.Todaythetwosocietiesholdperiodicdebatesfromtheirsecond-floormeetinghalls.

Builtin1832,theChapelwasoncethemaincenterofcampusactivities.Adailyreligiousservice,whichstudentswererequiredtoattend,washeldthere,aswereassembliesandcommencements.

ABellToweroriginallycrownedtheroof,butin1913wasfoundtoberottenandwasremoved.Thebell,whichrangforchapel,forthebeginningandendofclass,andinemergencies,wasplacedatthetopofawoodentoweratthebackoftheChapel.Nowthebellisrungonlytomarkathleticvictoriesorotherspecialoccasions.

AsundialinfrontoftheChapelmarksthesiteofToombsOak.AsenatorandConfederategeneral,RobertToombsbeganhiscareerbybeingexpelledfromtheuniversityin1825.Asthestorygoes,here-appearedatcommencementandspokesoeloquentlyundertheoak

Sittingintheheartofcampus,SanfordStadium(D3)haswelcomedasteadystreamofvisitorssinceOct.12,1929,whenanoverflowcrowdof30,000watchedVernon‘Catfish’SmithleadtheBulldogstoa15-0blankingofYale.ThroughtheyearsSanfordhasaddedlightsandseats,triplingincapacityandbecomingabeaconfor92,746spectatorsonFallSaturdays.

ButoneaspecthasremainedconstantsincethatYalegame–thesweepinghedgesthatoutlinetheplayingfield.TheideatoputhedgesaroundthefieldcamefromCharlieMorton,abusinessmanagerintheAthleticDepartment.HesaidhereceivedinspirationfortheideaduringavisittotheRoseBowl,wherehesawthehedgeofrosesinthatstadium.RoseswerenotasuitablechoiceforAthens’climate,soprivethedgeswereused.“BetweentheHedges”wasborn.

NamedforthelateS.V.Sanford,formeruniversitypresidentandChancelloroftheuniversitysystem,Sanfordwasinitiallyopen-endedontheEastandWestsides.Lightswereaddedin1940,andin1981theEastendwasenclosedandlightswereattachedtotheupperlevel.AdecadelatertheWestendwasclosed,andexpansionsin2003and2004addedasecondupperdeckonthenorthsideand27SkySuites.In1996,SanfordhostedthemedalroundoftheOlympicmen’sandwomen’ssoccercompetition.

Reopenedinearly2011followingamassiveexpansion,theGeorgiaMuseumofArt(F2)servesasbothanacademicmuseumandtheofficialartmuseumofGeorgia,aroleit’sheldsinceitwasfirstopenedin1948,whenitwasinthebasementofanoldlibraryonthenorthcampus.GMOAoccupiesacontemporarybuildingontheuniversity’seastcampus.

Measuringabout13feetinlengthandweighingbe-tween2,500and3,000pounds,theskeleton(bottomleft)isthefirstofaprehistoricanimaleverputtogetherinGeorgiaandonlythefourthNorthAmericangroundslothknowntohavebeenmountedanywhere.Theboneswerediscoveredin1970duringtheconstruc-tionofInterstate95nearBrunswickandexcavatedbyuniversitystudents.

Oneofthestudents,AlbertBrantley,anundergradu-ateingeologyatthetime,waschosentoreconstructandmounttheskeleton.

Hesimulatedamarshtorecreatethedeathscene,astheskeleton’stwobackfeetandonefronthandareinvisibleinthemudwhileonehandgraspsforfreedom.

AcrossthestreetfromtheMainLibrary,nestlednearLamarDodd,sitstheOldAthensCemetery(above),Athens’originalburialground.PurchasedforUGAin1801,alltownspeoplewereallowedtoburytheirdeadtherefreeofcharge.Somemarkersareuninscribedlocalfieldstones,whileothersareofimportedmarble.TwoRevolutionarysoldiersareburiedthere,aswellasDr.MosesWaddell,Universitypresidentfrom1819-1829.

Thelastknownburialsoccurredinthe1880s,andtodaythe

cemetery,withitsbeautifulpark-likesetting,servesasaplaceofquietre-flectionandremembranceofAthenslongago.

fOundEr’s GardEn The first garden club organized in America is remembered in nature

Createdasalivingmemorialtothe12foundersoftheLadies’Gar-denClubofAthens,thefirstgardenclubinAmerica(organizedin1891),theFoundersMemorialGarden(B3)notonlyservesasamuseumoflandscapedesign,butalsoanatural

laboratoryforbotany,forestry,andrelateddisciplines.ThepropertyislistedontheNationalRegisterofHistoricPlaces.

Thelayoutofthetwoandone-halfacreplotonNorthCampusincludesgroundsoftheformerHeadquartersHouse,aformalbox-woodgarden,twocourtyards,aterrace,aperennialgarden,andanarboretum.

Aftertheestablishmentofthegardenin1946,theoldsmoke-housewasacquiredforalivingmuseumtothe12women.Itwasrestoredandfurnishedinkeepingwiththeperiodofthehouse.His-toricalmementos,pictures,andapaintingdepictingthefirstmeetingofagardenclubareamongthemuseum’smosttreasureditems.

WhiletheuniversityhasbeenthefocalpointofAthenssincethetown’screation,thepast30yearshasseenitbecomeknownforsomethingelse–itsmusicsceneandthenightlifeitcreates.Somesayitwasthewater,whileotherssayitwasthesummerheat,orjustawaytopassthetime.Whateverthereason,therewassomethingaboutAthensthatmadepeoplewanttoplaymusic,andjustasmanypeopleeagertolisten.

ThesparkofthescenecanbetracedtoValentine’sDay,1977.Fivefriends,callingthemselvesTheB-52’s,playedsixsongs(includingRockLobster)atahousepartyonMilledgeAvenue.WithinayeartheywouldplayNewYorkCity,andayearlaterwouldreleasetheirdebutalbumtomuchfanfareworldwide.

TheB-52’ssuccessstartedasmallrippleofbands–Pylon,MethodActors,LoveTractor–thatbecameatidalwavewiththecreationofR.E.M.in1980.ThroughouttheyearsAthenshasbeenhometomanybandsandmusicians–WidespreadPanic,TheWhigs,NeutralMilkHotel,ofMontreal,DriveByTruckers,DangerMouseandMatthewSweet–thatfoundanaudiencebeyondAthens’borders.

afamiliarlandmarkonthecornerofDearingandFinleystreets(C5).The50-foot,whiteoak,alsocalledtheJacksonOak,occupiesasitelessthanaquarter-acreinsizewithintheFinleyStreetright-of-way.

Accordingtolegend,UniversityofGeorgiaprofessorWil-liamJacksonlivedacrossDearingStreetfromanoaktree,whichheoftenclimbedasachildandgrewtolove.ThisattachmentpromptedJacksontodeedtothetreethelandonwhichitgrew.

Whena1942stormbroughttheoldtreedown,oneofitsacornswassavedbytheJuniorLadiesGardenClub,whotendedthesproutandplantedthesaplingontheoriginalsitein1946.TheTreeThatOwnsItselfhasbeenlocallydesignatedasaHistoricLandmark.

designedbyJohnGilleland.CastintheAthensfoundry,itwasintendedtofiresimultaneouslytwoballsconnectedbyachainwhichwould“mowdowntheenemysomewhatasascythecutswheat.”Itfailedforlackofameansoffiringbothbarrelsattheexactinstant.Itwastestedinafield,butthelackofprecisesimultaneitycausedunevenexplo-sionofthepropellingcharges,whichsnappedthechainandgaveeachballanerraticandunpredictabletrajectory.Lackingaworkablefiringdevice,thegunwasafailure.ItwaspresentedtotheCityofAthenswhereithasbeenforalmostacentury,
