EXPECTED STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Through the academic advising experience you will:
Demonstrate the ability to make effective decisions concerning degree and career goals.
Develop an educational plan for successfully achieving your goals and select courses each semester to progress toward those goals.
Understand the value of the general breadth requirements.
Utilize the resources and services on campus to help you achieve your academic, personal, and career goals.
Make use of referrals to campus resources as needed.
Develop an educational plan through to graduation.
Utilize a degree audit in your educational planning.
DEMONSTRATING YOUR ACHIEVEMENT OF LEARNING OUTCOMES Working with an advisor, you will document your educational planning progress. This can be done using an on-going paper record or by creating an electronic portfolio. You will include your:
Education plan
Semester schedules Collaborative work based on referrals, recommendations, or research Supporting documents (i.e. transcripts, letters of reference, former course outlines)
Compiling this information into a portfolio will better prepare you for your next academic, career, and personal goals.
STUDENT/ADVISEE RESPONSIBILITIES:
You are expected to:
Schedule regular appointments or make regular
contacts with advisors.
Come prepared to each appointment with
questions or material for discussion.
Be an active learner by participating fully in the
advising experience.
Ask questions if you do not understand an issue or
have a specific concern.
Keep a personal record of your progress toward
meeting your goals.
Organize official documents in a way that enables
you to access them when needed.
Complete all assignments or recommendations
from your advisor.
Gather all relevant decision-making information.
Clarify personal values and goals and provide your
advisor with accurate information regarding your
interests and abilities.
Become knowledgeable about university programs,
policies, and procedures.
Accept responsibility for your decisions.
ADVISOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
You can expect your Advisor to:
Maintain confidentiality.
Be available to meet with you by appointment at the Arts Advice Centre
Be available via telephone or email to answer your questions
Have a thorough understanding of the curriculum, graduation requirements, and university policies and procedures, and communicate this information to you effectively.
Provide you with information about and strategies for utilizing the available resources and services on campus.
Encourage and support you as you gain the skills to develop clear and attainable educational plans.
Encourage and guide you in defining and developing realistic goals.
Assist you in understanding the purposes and goals of higher education and its effects on your life and personal goals.
Monitor and accurately document your progress toward meeting your goals.
Help you make effective decisions and take responsibility for your educational plans and achievements.
Assist you in working closely with your instructors.
MISSION STATEMENT:
We are College of Arts program specialists and
educators working to enhance student learning.
The Arts Advice Centre supports educational
planning for Faculty of Arts students. Advisors
help students plan their educational career, learn
academic success skills, and how to use available
resources and services.
What is Academic Advising?
Academic advising facilitates students’
understanding of the meaning and purpose of
higher education and fosters their intellectual and
personal development toward academic success
and lifelong learning. (NACADA, 2004)
