Volume XIX, Number 2 June, 2018 UFC W 2008 a VOICE for working America OBSERVER N E W S L E T T E R A True Champion of Labor We are saddened to notify you that retired President of UFCW Local 1583 (now Local 2008) passed away on February 20, 2018. Ralph J. Greene was born August 7, 1934, in Des Arc, Arkansas. He was one of six children and the only boy, which probably aided in giving him his competitive nature. After graduating in May of 1952, he moved to Camden and went to work for Safeway until October of 1953, when he joined the Air Force. After four years of service, he went back to work for Safeway in Helena and then in El Dorado. Ralph was key in helping to organize the El Dorado Safeway store, where he worked until February 29, 1960, when he went to work for UFCW Local 1583 as a Business Representative. Nine years later, he became President of the Local. Ralph’s 21-year tenure as President left a legacy that will be hard for anyone to follow. One of Ralph’s dreams was to move Local 1583 out of the small office they were renting and into its own mortgage-free building. Membership increased nearly every year making that dream a reality by 1978. Another big dream of Ralph’s was that his membership have eye care, dental care, and a good pension program. With hard work and an unstoppable attitude, he made that seemingly impossible dream come true for his membership as well. Ralph played a large role in the benefits our members enjoy today. Ralph’s strong leadership abilities were not only recognized by the Local Union, but by Arkansas Governors also. He was appointed to serve on several state advisory councils and commissions, where he lobbied state legislators to improve labor laws for working people. Ralph also pioneered the check-off authorization form for political contributions in the state of Arkansas, as well as using radio commercials as an alternative to strikes in settling contract disputes. In his role of president, Ralph only had one strike and it was with Safeway. Because of proper planning and his tough negotiating skills, that strike only lasted four hours. Ralph Greene also served as past president of the Central Arkansas Labor Council and a former member of the State Labor Board, and a Trustee for United Food and Commercial Workers Unions and Employers Pension Fund, as well as the South Central United Food and Commercial Workers Unions and Employers Health and Welfare Trust Fund. The International President also recognized Ralph’s commitment asking him to serve on the Advisory Committee to the International Executive Board, the committee that formed the Region 8 Council, and co-chair of Constitution Committee. He also served on the Foreign Affairs Committee at International meetings in Switzerland and Japan, as well as conducting union education seminars for the trade union movement in Pakistan, Sri Lanka, India, Korea, and Turkey. Ralph retired in August of 1990 to travel with his family and enjoy some hunting, fishing, and golfing. Ralph’s daughter, Tracy Greene New, told us that the Local was her father’s life, it was their life. She remembers how proud her dad was of the Union and all the accomplishments that were made for workers. She told us there were many a sleepless night she heard her dad on the phone with members trying to work out the best solution for them – he knew they depended on him, and he took that to heart. Ralph J. Greene was a strong Union leader with fierce commitment and a desire to achieve the absolute best for his membership – a true champion of labor. We thank you for all of this and more Ralph. Ralph J. Greene was born August 7, 1934, inDes Arc, Arkansas. He was one of six children andthe only boy, which probably aided in giving him hiscompetitive nature. After graduating in May of 1952,he moved to Camden and went to work for Safewayuntil October of 1953, when he joined the Air Force.After four years of service, he went back to work forSafeway in Helena and then in El Dorado. Ralph waskey in helping to organize the El Dorado Safewaystore, where he worked until February 29, 1960, whenhe went to work for UFCW Local 1583 as a BusinessRepresentative. Nine years later, he becamePresident of the Local. Ralph’s 21-year tenure asPresident left a legacy that will be hard for anyone tofollow.

8th Regular Convention of the UFCW International UnionThe UFCW International holds a Convention every 5 years to address new issues that face Labor as a whole and UFCW specifically.Every Local Union is eligible to send delegates and attend this Convention. During the 2018 Convention, we elected the President,Secretary-Treasurer, Executive Committee, and Executive Board to a new 5-year term. We also modified the constitution to addressnew issues that face our Union. Everyone had a great time, and we accomplished much that will help us continue to provide the serviceyou expect from your Union.

If called to a meeting with management, do not refuse to go where you aredirected for such a meeting, but read or give this card to management whenthe meeting begins.
If this discussion could in any way lead to my being disciplined or terminated,or affect my personal working conditions, I respectfully request that my UnionRepresentative, Officer, or Steward be present at this meeting.
Without representation, I choose not to answer any questions.
As a member of the UFCW, you have the peace of mind of knowing yourmanager cannot force you into a one-on-one disciplinary meeting with them.All you have to do is request to your manager that your union representativeor shop steward be present, and we can be there for you and make sureyou aren’t bullied or treated unfairly.
In the Weingarten case, the Supreme Court ruled that Union-represented workers have the right to Union representation during allmeetings or discussions with supervisors or managers that the memberreasonably believes might lead to discipline. These meetings or discussionsinclude discussions on the work floor, in work areas, offices and even outsidethe facility.
At the beginning of the meeting, the law requires the supervisor ormanager to disclose all meeting topics and to give the member a chanceto ask for a representative. Members can demand the presence of any on-duty steward. If none is available, the supervisor or manager must postponethe meeting until a steward is available. Companies may not punishemployees for exercising their Weingarten rights.
If you work in a UFCW-represented workplace, please helpencourage your fellow coworkers to exercise their Weingarten rights. Thisis important because they waive the right to a witness if they do not speakup and expressly request representation.

Influence Inside and Outside the WorkplaceFor every employee, both those in the public and private sector, what goes on in the world of politics has a direct connection to theunion’s ability to advance and protect the members’ interests. Legislatures pass and enforce laws that can make it easieror harder for unions to organize, to protect members’ health and safety, to bargain for reasonable health care coverage, and to improve countless other aspects of working life. What is won at a bargaining tablecan be taken away with a stroke of a pen by elected officials who are not worker-friendly,or by appointed or elected judges.

Growing Our Union FamilyMakes Us All Succeed
How do we grow our Union, so we have a stronger voice for all our members?This is a key question that can be answered in two ways – throughorganizing and engaging. When we organize workers and the places theywork, it spreads the benefits of UFCW membership to more people. Whenwe engage members and involve them directly, we areable to secure good contracts with better pay and benefitsthat show people the great value that comes with being apart of our Union family.
Neither of those steps would be effective withoutthe hard work of stewards. Stewards are on the front linesensuring everyone at work can fully see, enjoy, and improvethe benefits of their Union contract. When stewardssucceed and more people are joining our Union family, weare in a better position to secure contacts that bring peopletogether.
This work is doubly important in ‘right-to-work’ orshould I say ‘right-to-work-for-less’ states that tilt thebalance of power towards irresponsible corporations andaway from workers. Showing people in these states thefull value of joining UFCW is crucial to securing meaningful raises andimprovements in key benefits like health care, overtime after 8 hours, doubletime on your seventh day, and a safe workplace - just to name a few.
Remember, it’s the U and I in UNION that makes us strong; let’sall do our part to help grow our Union family!
Crecer Nuestra Familia de UniónNos Hace Tener Éxito
¿Cómo hacemos nuestra Unión crecer, para poder tener una voz fuerte para todosnuestros miembros? Esta es una pregunta principal que puede ser contestada en dosmodos – a través de organizar y participar. Cuando organizamos trabajadores y loslugares donde trabajan, extiende los beneficios de la membresía de la UFCW a más gente.
Cuando involucramos a los miembros y la implicación directa, nosotrospodemos asegurar buenos contratos con mejor pago y beneficios quele enseñan a la gente el valor grande que viene en ser parte denuestra familia de Unión.
Ninguna de esos pasos seria efectivos sin el trabajo duro delos Senescales. Los Senescales están en las líneas de enfrenteasegurándoles a todos en el trabajo quien puede ver, gozar, y mejorarlos beneficios de su contrato de Unión. Cuando los Senescales sonexitosos y más gente se está uniéndose con nuestra familia de Unión,nosotros estamos en una mejor posición para asegurar contactos quereúne a la gente.
Este trabajo es doble importante en estados de ‘derecho-a-trabajar’ o debo decir ‘derecho-a-trabajar-por-menos’ que mueven labalanza de poder a los corporaciones irresponsables y lejos de lostrabajadores. Enseñándole a la gente en estos estados el valor enterode unirse con la UFCW es importante para asegurar aumentos
significantes y mejoramientos en beneficios principales como cuidado de salud, tiempoextra después de 8 horas, doble tiempo en su séptimo día, y un lugar de trabajo seguro –solamente mencionar unos cuantos.
¡Recuerden, es la U y la I en UNION que nos hace fuerte; hagamos nuestraparte para ayudar a crecer a nuestra familia de Unión!
