Match backgroundHaving impressed on Matchday 1, Bayern München will look to consolidate their early advantage in Group E as theyface Dynamo Kyiv for the first time in 21 years.

• The German champions kicked off their 2021/22 UEFA Champions League campaign with a 3-0 victory atBarcelona, Robert Lewandowski scoring his 74th and 75th goals in the competition, while Ukrainian title holdersDynamo drew 0-0 at home to Benfica.

Previous meetings• The teams have met in ten previous contests, although none since March 2000. Bayern have won five of thosematches to Dynamo's four.

• Each side recorded a home win in the 1999/2000 UEFA Champions League second group stage, a late PauloSérgio goal giving Bayern a 2-1 win in Munich before Kakha Kaladze and Giorgi Demetradze secured Dynamo's 2-0win in Kyiv. Despite that result in the final round of matches, Dynamo's first win against Bayern since 1977, Bayernstill finished top of Group C to reach the quarter-finals. Dynamo were eliminated in third place having finished level onpoints with section runners-up Real Madrid, that season's eventual champions.

• Bayern also reached the 1998/99 UEFA Champions League final at Dynamo's expense, Mario Basler's goal inMunich securing a 1-0 home win in the second leg of their semi-final and a 4-3 aggregate success. Dynamo had led2-0 and 3-1 in the first leg, Andriy Shevchenko scoring twice, with Stefan Effenberg and Carsten Jancker levelling forBayern in the final 12 minutes.

• Dynamo won three of their first four meetings with Bayern, including both in the 1975 UEFA Super Cup, Oleh Blokhinscoring the only goal of the first leg in Munich and both in the Kyiv return.

• That 1975 defeat is the only one of their five matches against Dynamo in Munich that Bayern have failed to win.

Form guideBayern• This is Bayern's 25th UEFA Champions League group campaign, fewer only than Barcelona and Real Madrid (both26). They have now won their section 17 times, including in each of the last three seasons. Only Barcelona (21) havedone so more often.

• In 2020/21, as holders, Bayern finished first in Group A, extending their UEFA Champions League record ofsuccessive victories to 15 before being held 1-1 at Atlético de Madrid on Matchday 5. Those were the only points theydropped in their section.

• A side coached by Hansi Flick, who had guided Bayern to their sixth European Cup in 2019/20, then eased pastLazio in the round of 16 (4-1 a, 2-1) but a 3-2 home loss against Paris Saint-Germain – who Bayern had beaten 1-0 inthe previous season's final – in the quarter-final first leg proved insurmountable, Bayern bowing out despite asubsequent 1-0 win in France.

• Last season's first-leg defeat by Paris ended Bayern's run of eight successive home UEFA Champions Leaguevictories.

• Flick left Bayern to take over as Germany coach in the summer, Julian Nagelsmann moving from Leipzig to succeedhim in Munich.

• Champions of Germany for a record 31st time last season – with a landmark ninth successive Bundesliga title –Bayern have reached the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals or better in nine of the last ten seasons, theexception their defeat by eventual champions Liverpool in the 2018/19 round of 16.

• Aside from their ten games against Dynamo, Bayern's only other experience of Ukrainian opponents came in the2014/15 UEFA Champions League round of 16 when, after a 0-0 draw away to Shakhtar Donetsk in Lviv, they wonthe return 7-0 – their joint biggest victory in the competition. Thomas Müller, with a penalty, and Robert Lewandowskiwere both on target.

Dynamo• This is Dynamo's 18th UEFA Champions League group appearance, a Ukrainian record, and a second insuccession.

• Last season was the first time Dynamo had featured in the group stage since 2016/17, the Kyiv club finishing behindJuventus and Barcelona in Group G; all four of their points came against Ferencváros, a 1-0 win against theHungarian club on Matchday 6 securing third place.

• Dynamo beat Club Brugge, who had also moved over from the UEFA Champions League, in the UEFA EuropaLeague round of 32 (1-1 h, 1-0 a) but then lost to eventual winners Villarreal in the round of 16 (0-2 h, 0-2 a).

• The win at Club Brugge last season was one of only two in Dynamo's last 12 European away games (D4 L6).

• Mircea Lucescu guided Dynamo to their first league title since 2016 in 2020/21, a domestic cup triumph giving theclub a first Ukrainian double since 2014/15 and a ninth overall.

• This is the first time Dynamo have qualified automatically for the UEFA Champions League group stage since2016/17.

• Dynamo last faced a German club in the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League play-offs, when they beat BorussiaMönchengladbach 4-3 on aggregate (3-1 a, 1-2 h). The first leg was their third win in Germany on their 13th visit (D2L8), and a first since a 2-1 victory at eventual winners Hamburg in the 1982/83 European Cup quarter-final second leg(2-4 aggregate).
