Match backgroundMemories will be stirred of a famous UEFA Champions League hat-trick when Inter welcome Tottenham to Milan onthe opening night of Group B.

• The last time these teams met in a UEFA Champions League fixture in Milan, Gareth Bale scored a remarkabletreble for the visitors – albeit in a losing cause in their debut season in the competition. This time, however, it is theEnglish club who boast more recent UEFA Champions League experience; while this is Tottenham's third successivegroup campaign, Inter have not been at this stage since 2011/12.

Previous meetings• In two pulsating meetings in the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League group stage, Inter withstood a superb fightbackfrom ten-man Tottenham to win 4-3 in the first game at San Siro, despite Bale's hat-trick. Spurs turned the tables innorth London, running out 3-1 winners as both sides progressed to the last 16.

• There were also plenty of goals when the sides renewed acquaintance in the 2012/13 UEFA Europa League roundof 16, Spurs winning the home first leg 3-0 – Jan Vertonghen scoring the final goal – but Inter levelling the tie onaggregate back in Italy to force extra time. Emmanuel Adebayor's 96th-minute strike proved enough for Tottenham toprogress on away goals despite a 4-1 defeat on the night.

Form guideInter• Fourth in Serie A in 2017/18, Inter are the last Italian team to win the UEFA Champions League, in 2010 – their thirdEuropean Cup triumph, and first in 45 years.

• This is the 12th time Inter have been in the group stage – but the first since 2011/12.

• Inter have progressed from their group in their last eight UEFA Champions League campaigns.

• Inter did not take part in UEFA competition in 2017/18; their most recent European campaign came the previousseason, when they failed to progress from their UEFA Europa League group.

• The Nerazzurri have won their last four home games against English visitors, most recently a 1-0 defeat ofSouthampton in the 2016/17 UEFA Europa League group stage. They have won ten of their 15 home games againstPremier League clubs (D3 L2).

Tottenham• Third in last season's Premier League, Tottenham are in the group stage for the fourth time – and the third season ina row.

• Spurs got to the round of 16 in 2017/18, losing to Inter's domestic rivals Juventus. Tottenham drew the away first leg2-2 – having been 2-0 down – but went out after a 2-1 reverse at Wembley. They have won only one of their lastseven fixtures against Italian sides (D3 L3).

• Tottenham's most successful UEFA Champions League campaign came in 2010/11, when they reached the quarter-finals. That featured their only victory in Italy – a 1-0 success at AC Milan in the round of 16 first leg. Their record inthe country is W1 D4 L4.

• The London club picked up seven points on their travels in last season's group stage, finishing top of their sectionahead of eventual champions Real Madrid.

Links and trivia• Croatia's Ivan Perišić scored past Hugo Lloris in this summer's FIFA World Cup final, France eventually winning 4-2. Šime Vrsaljko and Marcelo Brozović also featured for Croatia.

• Perišić cancelled out Kieran Trippier's opener as Croatia, with Vrsaljko and Brozović again playing, beat an Englandside featuring Eric Dier, Harry Kane and Dele Alli after extra time in the World Cup semi-finals.

• Christian Eriksen missed his spot kick as Denmark lost to a Croatia side including Perišić, Vrsaljko and Brozović onpenalties in the World Cup round of 16.

• Have played in Italy:Fernando Llorente (Juventus 2013–15)Erik Lamela (Roma 2011–13)

• Llorente won two Serie A titles and the Coppa Italia during his two seasons at Juve.

• Have played in England:Andrea Ranocchia (Hull 2017)Borja Valero (West Brom 2008/09)

Head coachLuciano SpallettiDate of birth: 7 March 1959Nationality: ItalianPlaying career: Entella Chiavari, Spezia, Esperia Viareggio, EmpoliCoaching career: Empoli, Sampdoria, Venezia, Udinese (twice), Ancona, Roma (twice), Zenit, Internazionale Milano

• An industrious midfielder in his playing days, he started his coaching career in 1993/94 with former club Empoli andenjoyed immediate success with successive promotions. After a good first campaign in the top flight, Spalletti left tojoin Sampdoria but was sacked 28 games into the 1998/99 season.

• Had brief stays at Venezia, Udinese and Ancona but returned to Udinese in summer 2002, steering them to sixthand seventh-placed finishes before guiding them into the UEFA Champions League for the first time in 2004/05. Thissuccess persuaded Roma to approach Spalletti, and he signed a two-year contract.

• In 2005/06 Roma set a then-record of consecutive Serie A wins (11) and finished fifth, with Spalletti subsequentlynamed Serie A coach of the year. Guided the Giallorossi to Coppa Italia success in 2007 and 2008 and two UEFAChampions League quarter-finals. He resigned in September 2009 and joined Zenit three months later.

• Soon after he delivered their first Russian Cup in 11 years, followed by league titles in 2010 and in the transitional2011/12 campaign. Zenit reached the UEFA Champions League knockout stages for only the second time in 2013/14,but Spalletti left his post between the round of 16 first and second legs.

• Was out of work until January 2016, when he returned to Roma following Rudi Garcia's departure. Led the side frommid-table to third in that season and up to second place in 2016/17, departing again that summer; took charge of Interin June 2017 and finished his first campaign in fourth position, enough for a first UEFA Champions League campaignin six seasons.

Mauricio PochettinoDate of birth: 2 March 1972Nationality: ArgentinianPlaying career: Newell's Old Boys, Espanyol (three times), Paris Saint-Germain, BordeauxCoaching career: Espanyol, Southampton, Tottenham

• A tough-tackling central defender, Pochettino was a product of Newell's Old Boys in Argentina where he brieflyplayed with the legendary Diego Maradona during his five years in the senior squad.

• He moved to Europe in 1994 to join Spanish side Espanyol and won the Copa del Rey in 2000, before joining Parisin January 2001. After a stint at Bordeaux, returned to Espanyol, initially on loan, before hanging up his boots in 2006having won another Copa del Rey. Capped 20 times by Argentina, appearing in the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

• Switched to coaching with Espanyol in January 2009, with the club lying third from bottom in the Spanish Liga;guided them to a tenth-placed finish. Under Pochettino, three further mid-table finishes followed before a slow start to2012/13 prompted his departure.

• Surprisingly resurfaced in England at Southampton in January 2013, succeeding Nigel Adkins; introduced a high-pressing, attacking style which helped the club keep clear of relegation trouble. In his first full season in charge, tookSaints to eighth position with 56 points – a new club record.

• Appointed Tottenham manager on a five-year contract in May 2014, and led the side to the English League Cup finalin his debut campaign, only to lose out to Chelsea. The following season, 2015/16, Pochettino's side were incontention to win the club's first league title since 1961 until a draw at Chelsea with two games to go; neverthelessfinished third to book a UEFA Champions League return, and finished a place higher, as Premier League runners-up,in 2016/17, before claiming third spot again the following season.
