• A former teacher, Mourinho had spells working at Sporting Clube de Portugal, Porto and FC Barcelona as acoaching assistant in the 1990s.

• As coach, had a brief, nine-game stay at Benfica and a highly successful tenure at Leiria before really making hismark after arriving at Porto in January 2002. In his first full season, 2002/03, Porto won the UEFA Cup and a domesticdouble. The next year they retained their league title and claimed the UEFA Champions League with a 3-0 defeat ofAS Monaco FC in Gelsenkirchen.

• Joined Chelsea in 2004 and led the club to the League Cup and their first league championship for 50 years in hisfirst season. Followed up with the league title again in 2006, and both the League Cup and FA Cup in 2007 but left theclub that September.

• Joined Inter in June 2008 and in his first campaign retained the Scudetto, a feat the Nerazzurri repeated in 2009/10when they also added the Coppa Italia and the UEFA Champions League title, their first European crown since 1965.

• Victory at the Santiago Bernabéu was Mourinho's last act as Inter coach before he joined Madrid on a four-year deal.His first season featured the club's first Copa del Rey victory in 18 years and his second brought the Liga title; also ledMadrid to three successive UEFA Champions League semi-finals, equalling Sir Alex Ferguson's record of seven last-four appearances, before returning to Chelsea at the start of June 2013.

• Born in the Swiss city of Schaffhausen, Di Matteo started his career with the local club, scoring two goals in 50league appearances over three seasons before moving to Zürich in 1991. Won the Swiss league title with Aarau in1992/93, his sole season with the club, going on to a three-year spell at Lazio.

• Became Chelsea's record signing in 1996 and paid back a chunk of that €5.85m fee with goals in their final victoriesof the 1997 FA Cup – after 42 seconds, then the fastest in the final's history – and 1998 English League Cup. Scoredthe only goal of another FA Cup final triumph in 1999/2000, the last final at the old Wembley.

• Having won 34 caps for Italy, Di Matteo sustained a triple leg fracture in a UEFA Cup tie against FC St Gallen earlyin the 2000/01 campaign and was forced to retire in February 2002. Then-manager Claudio Ranieri asked him to leadout the team for the 2002 FA Cup Final, which Chelsea lost to Arsenal FC.

• Took charge of MK Dons in July 2008 and, having finished third in the English third tier, was appointed by WestBrom the following summer. In his first season, led the club to second place in the Championship and promotion to thePremier League but sacked in February 2011.

• That June, Di Matteo returned to Chelsea as assistant to André Villas-Boas and, following the Portuguese coach'sdismissal on 4 March 2012, was appointed as interim first-team coach for the remainder of the season. After guidingthe Blues to FA Cup and UEFA Champions League glory, Di Matteo was confirmed as manager on a permanent basisthat summer but left the club in November 2012, resurfacing at Schalke almost two years later.
