Match backgroundRSC Anderlecht go in search of their first UEFA Champions League home victory in nine years when they take onGroup C rivals Málaga CF at the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium.

• Anderlecht have lost seven and drawn two of their last nine home games in the group stage and last won a UEFAChampions League fixture in Brussels in November 2003, 1-0 against Olympique Lyonnais.

• While Anderlecht opened Group C with a goalless draw at AC Milan, Málaga marked their group stage debut withan impressive 3-0 home defeat of FC Zenit St Petersburg, Isco scoring twice.

Match background• Anderlecht did beat FK Ekranas 5-0 and AEL Limassol FC 2-0 at home in this season's qualifying rounds and lastterm recorded three straight home victories in the UEFA Europa League group stage.

• Málaga boast a solid away record in UEFA competition. Besides earning a 0-0 draw at Panathinaikos FC in theplay-offs, the Andalusian club won five and lost just one of eight away fixtures in their only previous European campaign– which encompassed the 2002 UEFA Intertoto Cup and 2002/03 UEFA Cup.

• Málaga's first opponents in that debut campaign were KAA Gent in the UEFA Intertoto Cup third round. They won3-0 at home before earning a 1-1 draw in Belgium thanks to Julio Dely Valdés's added-time equaliser.

• Anderlecht won their first seven home matches against Spanish visitors but have lost three of the past four. Theiroverall home record against Liga sides is W8 D0 L3.

• Anderlecht's most recent meeting with a Spanish club was a 5-1 aggregate win against Athletic Club in the 2009/10UEFA Cup round of 32. Roland Juhász scored in a 4-0 home win, with Lucas Biglia on target in the 1-1 first-leg drawin Bilbao.

Team ties• John van den Brom's only previous experience of Spanish opposition came as a player in the Vitesse side beaten1-0 home and away by Real Madrid CF in the 1992/93 UEFA Cup third round.

• Silvio Proto and Olivier Deschacht played in Anderlecht's 1-0 home loss to Joaquín's Real Betis Balompié onmatchday two of the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League group stage. Deschacht then helped Anderlecht to a 1-0victory in Seville.

• In between those matches, Joaquín helped Spain beat Proto and Deschacht's Belgium 2-0 in a 2006 FIFA WorldCup qualifier in Brussels.

• Onyewu won six and lost just two of 12 meetings with Anderlecht, including Standard's Belgian First Leaguechampionship play-off victory in 2009.

• Onyewu is a United States national team colleague of Sacha Kljestjan.

• Jérémy Toulalan helped Lyon eliminate Anderlecht in the 2009/10 UEFA Champions League play-offs, featuring inboth legs of an 8-2 aggregate triumph including a 3-1 success in Brussels.

• Behrang Safari was in the FC Basel 1893 team beaten 5-0 at home by FC Barcelona in the 2008/09 group stagebut which subsequently earned a 1-1 draw at the Camp Nou.

• Tried his luck in Turkey at İstanbulspor in 1995/96 but lasted one season before returning for five more years withVitesse, hanging up his boots in 2003 after a short spell at De Graafschap.

• Returned to Ajax as second-team coach, becoming head of youth development in 2005. Took the reins at second-tierAGOVV two years later and guided the club to the promotion play-offs in his final season.

• Earned a promotion of his own in 2010, being named Den Haag coach and took the club into Europe for the firsttime in 23 years. In June 2011 Vitesse convinced Van den Brom to make a heart-warming return and he rewardedtheir faith by leading the club into the UEFA Europa League via the end-of-season play-offs.

• That November he succeeded Jesualdo Ferreira as coach of Málaga and in the following campaign oversaw afourth-placed league finish, the club's best ever, subsequently negotiating UEFA Champions League qualifying toreach the group stage for the first time.

• Viktor Kassai works as a travel agent in his native Hungary and his progress to UEFA's list of Elite referees hasensured plenty of opportunities to broaden his horizons still further.

• Born on 10 September 1975, Kassai has taken charge of more than 100 matches in the Hungarian top flight, gettinghis first taste of international action in the 2001 UEFA Regions' Cup.

• Kassai, whose principle interests are sports and film, officiated two UEFA Cup matches in 2003/04 and the followingseason brought his first UEFA Champions League engagement, the second qualifying round first leg between HNKHajduk Split and Shelbourne FC. Went on to officiate FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Under-21 Championshipgames the same season.

• In July 2005 Kassai refereed three games at the European U19 Championship in Northern Ireland and has remaineda regular in international fixtures ever since, also working at the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Canada.

• Worked as a fourth official at UEFA EURO 2008, where he was given three matches, and was a referee at thefootball tournament at the Olympic Games in Beijing later that summer, taking charge of the final as Argentina defeatedNigeria. Oversaw four games at the 2010 World Cup, including the Germany-Spain semi-final, and seven matchesin the UEFA Champions League the following season, concluding with the Wembley final between FC Barcelona andManchester United FC.

• Holders Chelsea FC are hoping to avoid becoming the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stagesince the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/2000and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage). In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European ChampionClubs' Cup holders and lost 4-3 on aggregate in the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva.

• No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last clubto win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997) and ManchesterUnited FC (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League final as holders only to lose.

• S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League having featuredagainst Real Madrid CF on matchday six in 2007/08 aged 43 years and 252 days. Alessandro Costacurta is the oldestoutfield player; the Milan defender was 40 years and 211 days when he played against AEK Athens FC in 2006/07.

• Ryan Giggs is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 37 years and 289 days, in Manchester United's1-1 draw at SL Benfica on 14 September 2011.

• Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared; he was 16 years and 87 days when he started forRSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was sent off in the 37th minute.

• Peter Ofori-Quaye is the youngest player to have scored in the UEFA Champions League, aged 17 years and 195days. He found the net in Olympiacos FC's 5-1 defeat at Rosenborg BK on 1 October 1997.

• Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a match in Barcelona's 7-1 win against Bayer 04 Leverkusenon 7 March 2012. Eight players, including Messi, have scored four times in a game, most recently FC Bayern München'sMario Gomez on matchday eight last season.

• Barcelona have finished as group winners on 13 occasions, one more than Manchester United and Real Madrid.
