Tom & Anthony Honner

ANTHONY HONNER

MINLACOWIE POLL HEREFORD STUDROSCREA FARMINGBRENTWOODSOUTH AUSTRALIA 5575

David and Mary Carroll have searched the world for the best genetics to present the cattle that are before you today.

We met when David wanted and bought the European marketing rights in Hustler, a five month old calf by a Canadian Champion, out of a Sydney Champion who fetched twice the price at auction of any bull in Australia that year.

David’s judgement was good as Hustler went on never to be beaten in the show ring, winning all 5 of the major Royal Shows in Australia and siring multiple champions, male and female in 6 countries. We have shared other bulls, the best we can find.

Australians, in common with David, search the world for the very best bulls. I have seen his herd and he has seen mine. I believe we share the same unique vision and strict guidelines of how to breed what the industry requires. Opportunities like today’s don’t come along very often and should be taken advantage of by any breeder looking to get ahead.

My son, Tom, and David’s Dáithí are the young guns of the future. A fantastic future as we are seeing all time record prices in Australia for meat to feed the world, and grass-fed Herefords are booming.

I wish a successful day for everyone.

Mary Carroll, owner

David Carroll, owner

The Carroll family has farmed in Coole, near Campile in Co. Wexford, for seven generations. The present size of the farm is 230 acres. Of that, 100 acres are in cereals, 25 forestry, and the remainder is pastureland, on which the pedigree herd is carried.

The first Hereford, a bull, was introduced to the farm in 1919, and the first pedigree breeding female was purchased in 1935. The pedigree herd was held at low numbers until the decision to change to Polled was made in 1979. At that point, the herd was expanded to the present headcount of over two hundred.

Following on from the success of our first ever production sale, in September 2005, and with numbers climbing in the herd, we have decided to hold a second. Once again, we were determined that any UDEL production sale would present cattle of a standard that we would normally retain within the herd. We are offering practically two full crops of young females, and rely on the genetic base we have built up to replace them. Only three females, apart from a few culled, are being retained from the two crops, the reason being that they are the only females capable of carrying on their lines, thereby keeping their families from dying out.

Strong emphasis has always been placed on the female families, of which there are twenty in the herd, and we have included at least one member from fifteen of them in the sale, as follows:

the initial letters of the first names of David Carroll’s children.

Dáithí & Teresa Carroll, owners, with their children Aoibhinn, Sarah and David.

Necklace Also from a heifer purchased from Costhorpe.

Belle A branch of the Victra family also from Costhorpe.

Curly From a heifer purchased from D.J. Vaughan’s Kingsland herd, they go back to the VERN.

Lovely From the foundation female in the herd “Carrickbyrne Beauty” purchased in 1935 from T.W. Jefferies. It goes back to the Lovely family of Glynwood.

Mayflower From the John E. Rice JR herd Wyoming USA.

Beauty From Rowington Marina 97th bred by Ted Hewitson, Warwickshire U.K.

Helen A branch of the Oyster family from J.H. Arkwright, Hampton Court, through DTC Vaughan, The Moor, Bodenham, Hereford.

Gem From Millbrook Little Gem 59th purchased from John Smith, Oldcastle. Co. Meath in the early Seventies. They descend from the Glynwood herd.

Since the majority of our bull buyers are commercial dairy and beef farmers, our aim is to produce functional, easy calving, fast-growing cattle.

We hope the cattle on offer today meet your approval and we thank you for your interest in UDEL Polled Herefords.

ID: IE371040610925

DOB: 4-Oct-2008

BEN HURLOT 43

It is with great reluctance that we part with Ben Hur.

He has been a consistent breeder, bringing growth, colour, muscle and temperament in his offspring.

He is still extremely active, fertile and docile.

We are retaining quite a number of his daughters.

Due to his competence as a breeder we were seldom able to get him to show condition.

Interbreed champion Enniscorthy show 2011 and shown at the Ploughing Cahmpionships, New Ross, 2012.
