Gaucho Water Polo

2003 Season Preview

2

The 2003 UC Santa Barbara men’s wa-ter polo roster includes 22 players, 13 of whom are newcomers, with 11 of those being freshmen. Although the newcomers outnumber the returnees on this year’s Gaucho team, head coach Joe O’Brien believes that the quality of the experienced players will make-up the difference. “I think what we have is experience at every position,” O’Brien said. “Very good experience,” he added. Perhaps the best of the experience comes in a pair of juniors. Brian Alexan-der, a defender, and Andrew Schoneberger, a driver, each competed on the interna-tional level during the summer of 2003 and O’Brien hopes the Gauchos will benefi t. “Brian Alexander played for the Ju-nior National Team and was the primary defender and leading scorer. That’s a big plus,” O’Brien said. “He should bring some stability to that position. Andrew Schoneberger’s experience with the World University Games Team, and also being a good defensive player, will be an important factor for us. Those are two guys we will be counting on this year.” As always, the Gauchos will have their work cut out for them in the brutal Moun-tain Pacifi c Sports Federation. “We have to be ready to compete ev-ery time we get into the pool,” declared O’Brien. “This league is just very tough. We can’t just show-up and expect to be competitive, we have to be ready to work.”GoalkeeperRegardless of who starts in goal for UCSB, it will be a newcomer. All three goalkeepers listed on the Gau-cho roster are fi rst-year players at Santa Barbara, although one, Mike Hoy, is a ju-nior transfer who was a mid-year transfer and played with his UCSB teammates in the spring and summer. Despite a lack of Division I experi-ence, O’Brien likes the 2003 goalkeeping situation for the Gauchos. “The biggest improvement is that we haven’t had competition in the goal in about three or four years which is really hard, and now we do,” he said. “You like to believe that every kid is going to be self-motivated, but it’s hard for a young person to get through a bad day when they don’t need to. What we have now is exceptional competition. We also have goalies who are extremely supportive of each other and who push each other to excel. The whole dynamic is going to improve us in the cage.” Hoy is a transfer from Los Angeles Valley College where he was a two-time all-conference selection and where he ranked third in the state in saves as a

sophomore. The other options are freshman Rick Wright out of University High School in San Diego and Jon Bonafede from Mt. San Antonio College.

“Wright has exceptional balance and is a great passer, Hoy has the experience of playing with the team in the spring and summer, and Bonafede has size and quick-ness” said O’Brien. All three bring things that make them automatically a contributor to our game, and their positive competition helps our goalie position to be in very good shape.”Defenders and DriversAlexander, Schoneberger and senior Doug Arthur lead the way among the defenders and drivers. Schoneberger and Arthur, are UCSB’s top returning scorers, having each notched 33 goals in 2002, and although he missed most of last season and was lim-ited to three goals, Alexander will play a major role in 2003. O’Brien believes the international experience that Alexander and Schoneberger gained during the sum-mer will payoff for the Gauchos in 2003, but he believes Arthur will emerge as the team-leader.

“Senior Doug Arthur had a breakout season last year,” commented O’Brien. “He is in his fi fth-year now and is a natu-ral leader. His teammates look up to him so much. He’s the kind of player and the kind of person everyone is going to want to have a good game for. When Doug is play-ing well, the guys are going to thrive off of him. He is just a powerful personality that has an impact on a team.”

In addition to the trio of Alexander, Schoneberger and Arthur, UCSB will look to sophomore returnees Ian Christensen, Ramiro Saldain and Jarrod Muenter. Christiansen scored ten goals as a fresh-man in 2002, while Muenter added nine

and Saldain three. The Gauchos also added freshman Matt Tilburg (Poway HS/Poway, CA). Although a freshman, Tilburg has in-ternational experience, having played with the USA Youth Team in 2002 throughout Europe. “Ian’s game and confi dence rose tre-mendously during the winter and spring,” O’Brien began. “Last year he was a little hesitant and reactionary at times, but now I anticipate him being more balanced and an important part of our game. Ramiro brings so much explosiveness. He is extremely fast, quick and powerful, so surgically used, he’s a really tough match-up.” Overall, O’Brien thinks it will be important for the Gauchos to play strong defensively in order to compete in league. “The biggest thing for us will be rely-ing on our strength on the defensive end,” he surmised. “We do match up physically well with teams in the MPSF. The thing we need to improve is our decision-making and composure. If we can do that, we will have a good year.Two-MetersIn 2002, UCSB depended primarily on one player at two-meters, Steve Traverso, and while he returns as a senior in 2003, he now has some company. Traverso, who scored 16 goals during his junior campaign, will again be an im-portant factor at two-meters for the Gau-chos. He will be joined by a duo of fresh-men in 6-foot-4 Joe Ferguson (Bellarmine Prep/San Jose, CA) and 6-foot-4 Matt Dale (Righetti HS/Santa Maria, CA). “Our potential to improve at two-meters is very good,” said O’Brien. “Essentially we’re going from having one two-meter man in Steve Traverso, who did a great job, to now having competition at that spot. Joe Ferguson has been very impressive. His

feel and athleticism in the water have been great and he has great size. Matt Dale is a little bit deceptive. He’s not the biggest guy but he has the ability to mix it up.”SummaryThe improved depth of the 2003 UCSB men’s water polo team should prove benefi cial not only in matches but also in practices with players competing for playing time. The return of three out of the top four scorers from 2002 is also a major positive, as is the international experience gained by players during the off-season. In all, the Gauchos have some solid up-side potential for success this season. Competing in the always-tough Moun-tain Pacifi c Sports Federation will pres-ent a major challenge, but when hasn’t it? This year, however, the Gauchos will be prepared.Brian Alexander

McCormick Memorial Leadership AwardEstablished in 1990, the McCormick Memorial Leadership Award honors UC Santa Barbara water polo players who possess the qualities of loyalty, leadership, self-sacrifi ce and courage among one’s peers. Those qualities were exemplifi ed by Tim McCormick, a varsity water polo letterwinner at UCSB in 1981 and 1983. McCormick served as the team co-captain in 1983. After graduating from UCSB in 1984 with a degree in business economics, McCormick went into the U.S. Navy and rose to the rank of lieutenant, fl y-ing F-14 fi ghter jets. McCormick died in 1991 as the result of an automobile accident. Each year a Gaucho water polo player who best exemplifi es those qualities put forward by McCormick will be awarded the leadership award.

UCSB Points of Pride

• The UC Santa Barbara Intercollegiate Athletic Department has a gradu-ation rate of 83%. The 83% mark is 16% above the graduation rate of the University as a whole. In fact, a recent U.S. News & World Report survey ranked UCSB third nationally in graduation rate among all NCAA Divi-sion I schools.

• UC Santa Barbara has three consecutive Big West Conference Com-missioner’s Cups. The Commissioner’s Cup is considered the all-sports championship for the Big West Conference.

• In the past fi ve years UC Santa Barbara has had more than 150 Academic All-Big West honorees, more than any other conference school.

• In 2002-03, UC Santa Barbara had fi ve teams qualify for NCAA postsea-son competition, and over the past fi ve years nearly 25 have accomplished the feat.

• Last year alone, UC Santa Barbara had seven conference athletes of the year. In the past fi ve years, more than 25 have been honored. In addition, UCSB had nearly 50 all-conference selections in 2001-02 and in the past fi ve years, there have been nearly 250 all-conference athletes.

• In the past 20 years of NCAA Division I competition, UC Santa Barbara has produced more than 150 All-American athletes.

• In 2002, UC Santa Barbara’s men’s and women’s basketball teams each won their respective Big West Conference basketball tournament. UCSB is the only current member of the league that has won both the men’s and women’s tournaments in the same year and the fi rst since 1990.

• UC Santa Barbara has produced 15 Olympians, including four Gold Medal winners. Most recently, swimmer Jason Lezak and men’s volley-ball player Eric Fonoimoana, won Gold Medals at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.

• Through the NCAA’s CHAMPS/Life Skills program, UC Santa Barbara athletes have become an important, contributing part of their community. Whether it is a food drive, a toy drive for underprivileged children, a read-ing program in local schools or volunteer sports clinics for kids, Gaucho are giving something back.

• UC Santa Barbara Athletics is a department of stability and success. UCSB’s 15 head coaches not only have outstanding records in their re-spective sports, but a great deal of stability as well. The 15 have combined

for 171 years at UCSB, an average of 12 years per coach. Six have been UCSB head coaches for ten years or longer and three have been in Santa Barbara for more than 20 years. Seven of UCSB’s head coaches were Gaucho student-athletes.

The University The Athletic Department• UC Santa Barbara’s meteoric rise to distinction—from a teaching col-lege to world-class university in just over 50 years—is a phenomenal success story in modern higher education. It is with great pride that UCSB celebrates its three Nobel Prizes in chemistry and physics won by UCSB professors for their landmark research. Alan Heeger, professor of physics and materials, shares the 2000 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for devising the electrically conducting plastics that could revolutionize computing, Engi-neering Professor Herbert Kroemer shares the 2000 Nobel Prize in Phys-ics for developing layered semiconductor and low-energy laser technol-ogy used in ultra-fast computers, satellites, cellular phones, compact-disk players and other consumer goods. Together with the 1998 Nobel Prize in Chemistry won by UCSB Physicist Walter Kohn, these pioneering ac-complishments demonstrate the importance of interdisciplinary research, a hallmark at UCSB.

• UCSB’s international status and the eminence of its faculty are widely recognized and celebrated. UCSB’s renowned faculty numbers about 900 and also includes fellows of the National Endowment for the Humanities, recipients of the National Medal of Science, and members of the National Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, and the National Academy of Engineering.

• An elected member of the prestigious Association of American Universi-ties, the vibrant, energetic campus ranks with Harvard, Stanford and UC Berkeley among the leading institutions of higher learning in the United States and Canada.

• Recognition of academic quality takes many forms. One of the most prestigious is support from the National Science Foundation. UCSB is home to eight national research centers and institutes, including six that are sponsored by NSF. For example, the Institute for Theoretical Physics brings together the world’s foremost theorists to study problems overlap-ping the specialized subfi elds of the discipline.

• UCSB has been selected as one of the fi rst three California Institutes for Science and Innovation by Gov. Gray Davis. The California NanoSystems Institute, a research partnership between UCSB and UCLA, will receive $100 million annually, which will be matches two-to-one by private in-dustry. The institutes are expected to produce scientifi c advances in fi elds critical to the future of California’s economy.

• The quality of the UCSB faculty’s scientifi c research has, for the fi rst time, led the Institute for Scientifi c Information to place the campus among the top 10 of the top 100 federally funded universities in the nation according to its new Sci-ence Watch ranking, which is based on citations-per-paper score. UCSB ranks number four among public universities. The prestigious report includes ratings of fi rst-place for the university’s departments of physics and materials.
