MA ANIMATIONMA Animation is a flexible course which offersyou the opportunity to explore the broad subject of animation within a professionalframework. It aims to guide and empower you to find out what role you wish to undertake in the industry and how to make those firststeps towards it.

Sarah Ann Kennedy-Parr, an RCA graduate, worked in the animation industry for fifteenyears before entering the world of academia. She created, wrote and directed her own series for Channel 4 called Crapston Villas as well as working on longer format showssuch as EastEnders. Sarah keeps her industry knowledge and contacts fresh by writing the occasional episode of Peppa Pig and voicing the character of Miss Rabbit in PeppaPig and Nanny Plum in Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom. Her own line of research looksat the role of women in the animation industry and how this impacts on the charactersand stories created.

Adam Vickerstaff

Since graduating, Adam has worked atgames company Evolution Studios and iscurrently working as an Object Artist at Secret Sorcery.

Nigel Hunter

Following graduation, Nigel moved to Vancouver and has worked on various TVseries and films including Escape From Planet Earth (Feature, Rainmaker Entertainment – Crowd Animator plussome shots). Nigel has also worked on another film, The Prophet, which was released in 2014 and was directed byRoger Allers (of Lion King fame). Nigelsays that he would never have been able to break into the animation industry without doing UCLan’s MA Animation.

Yujie Duan

Yujie is now a Lecturer at Hangzhou DianziUniversity, teaching CGI animation to students.

Hayley Dwan

Since graduation, Hayley has been workingfor advertising company Milky Tea and animation studio Factory Transmedia.

Charlotte Blacker

As a student, Charlotte won the Royal Television Award for Best Film. Since graduating, she has worked at Loose Moose in London and Mackinnon & Saunders in Manchester, andhas now set up her own animation company called Good Cop Bad Cop Productions, basedin Wakefield. http://www.goodcopbadcopproductions.com/

RESEARCH ONE

Research One is a single module that underpins Practice One. During this moduleyou will be introduced to various researchmethods and practices which are useful inrelation to industrial practices as well as afoundation to PhD or doctorate levels ofstudy.

RESEARCH TWO

Research Two (single module) features a series of talks from industry professionals togive you a useful insight and networkingopportunity into the animation industry toenable you to begin your own networkingjourney.

COURSE CONTENTPRACTICE ONE

Practice One, a double module, starts yourinvestigation into your own line of enquiry -helping you to discover which area of animation you would like to specialise inand why. Previous areas of research havebeen: facial animation; animation acting;how to make the perfect showreel; andeven how to create a winning pre-schoolseries. During this module, you may decidewhat you want to do and embark on thepre-production stages. Workshops are available if you intend to learn new softwareor skills within the animation discipline.

PRACTICE TWO

Another double module, Practice Two is acontinuation of the work from Practice One but in more depth. Studies include polishing pre-production; creating the assets for the film; animation tests; and experimenting.

PRACTICE THREE

Part of this triple module is to contextualisethe research that underpins your practicalproject in the form of a poster presentation.This presentation will summarise anddemonstrate the research undertaken whilstcompleting the practical work. You will havethe opportunity to work across disciplineswith sound designers and musicians on thesound. The final work will be displayed inan end-of-year show.

OVERVIEWThe animation industry is expanding.Animation is used in games design, advertising, special effects or to simplytell a story or a joke. It can be seen online, in a TV series, in a feature filmor as part of a documentary.

UCLan’s MA Animation offers you theopportunity to explore the broad subject of animation within a professional framework. It is mainly a practical course where you may specialise in one area of animation such as modelling, special effects, writing or sound design, or you maychoose to make a film in the style andmethods of your own choice. You areable to choose to work on live briefsthroughout your MA under the guidance and advice of your coursetutor to gain industry experience

within the nurturing framework of anacademic institution.

Regular visiting industry professionalsand trips to animation festivals will helpand encourage you to network withthe animation industry and are a keypart of this course, ensuring that youhave the optimum chance of forgingyour own contacts for the future.Research modules underpin practiceand help to guide you with insight andunderstanding of the professionalworld of animation – which in turnhelps you to forge the career path ofyour choice.
