In an historical moment where citizens demonstrate the need to regain trust in politicians, thedefinition and implementation of politics is crucial in order to renew the social contract betweencitizens and public authorities.

Since the Beijing Declaration adopted by the international community in 1995, severalinstruments have been put in place to deliver gender equality.

In a changing global context, local and regional authorities are the closest sphere ofgovernment to the citizens and its demands. The participation of women in local decision-making strengthens the bases of society and ensures that all aspects of politic, economic andsocial life take into account the gender equality.

The session will explore several affirmative mechanisms (such as quota) put in place around the

world in the last decades and will revise them in order to contribute to the role of local andregional authorities as promoters of a more sustainable and fair world.

As the government bodies with much of responsibility for many of the MDGs and goalssuggested for Post-2015, local and regional governments advocate for the recognition of theircrucial role in the definition, implementation and monitoring of the Global Agenda at local level.Cities and regions across the world are already demonstrating their capacity to address povertyreduction, prosperity and sustainable development.

At the same time, although it is clear that every goal has a direct impact on the lives of women, only 2 of the current 8 MDGs explicitly mention women. The role of women in the advancementof communities is far to be sufficiently reflected both in the international and national policies.

The forthcoming Post-2015 Development Agenda should pay special attention to the promotionof gender equality as a cross-cutting issue and underlining value of any development agenda.
