Countless hours in mud, rain, snow and airports have preceded this book becoming real and tangible. It is not perfect but hope-fully will help to relive the magnificent events of the season even if you were not there in person.

This book contains the fruit of a four month project and has transpired to record the events of the 2009/2010 UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup season as well as possible.

You have to admit, not strong selling points. as much as i have loved cycling for many years, cyclo-cross has to be the dark horse of the sport for me. i didnt know much about it and to be honest, i had never really given it a second thought. it hadnt sounded too enticing, with all the mud and the cold weather and the short, urban courses.

and then it all changed back in 2008, when I had the chance to see a cyclo-cross World Cup race live and boy, was it brilliant. It felt like the Formula-1 of cycling: you get to see the riders several times throughout the race; the pace is unbelievably intense and the crowd go crazy every time their favourite rider whizzes past. It was the beginning of a love affair between cyclo-cross and I. I would like to dedicate this book to these modern gladiators, who go out there week after week and keep fighting for points and prize money, no matter how bad the weather is or how hard the competition is. and though the season might end in February, theyll be back as soon as the leaves start to fall. and we will all be there too, to witness the next exciting battle.

Ook al hield ik altijd al veel van fietsen, veldrijden was altijd een beetje een blinde vlek. ik wist er niet veel van en eerlijk gezegd kon het me ook niet bar veel schelen. Het klonk ook niet echt aanlokkelijk, met al die modder, het koude weer, korte stedelijke parcours niet echt een goede reclame.

Maar alles veranderde in 2008, toen ik live een wedstrijd van het WK veldrijden mocht bijwo-nen: in n woord geweldig. Het voelde als de Formule 1 van het fietsen: je krijgt de rennersheel vaak te zien, ze razen met een gigantische snelheid over de baan en het publiek gaat

helemaal uit zijn dak als hun favoriete renner voorbij raast. Dit was het begin van een liefdes-relatie tussen het veldrijden en mij. Ik draag dit boek op aan de moderne gladiato-ren die elke week de arena betreden en blijven strijden voor punten en prijzengeld, ongeacht de soms erbarmelijke weersomstandigheden en de moordende concurrentie. en ook al loopt het seizoen in februari af, de renners zijn terug zodra de bladeren beginnen te vallen. en wij zullen er allemaal ook weer bij zijn, om getuige te zijn van het volgende spannende gevecht.

Ve se ale zmnilo v roce 2008, kdy jsem ml anci vidt iv Svtov pohr v cyklokrosu a love, bylo to vynikajc. Ml jsem pocit, e to byla Formule 1 v cyklistice: jezdce bylo vidt velmi asto, rychlost byla neuviteln intenzvn a dav lel pokad, kdy okolo pro-svitl oblben jezdec. Byl to zatek milostn-ho afry - j a cyklokros. Chtl bych tedy tuto knihu vnovat vem nmodernm gladitorm, kte tden za tdnem, jako opravdov gladi-toi, bojuj o body a penitou vhru, bez ohle-du na to, jak patn je poas nebo jak je sout nron. a i kdy sezna kon na konci nora, jakmile zane padat list, budou zpt. a my tak, abychom tomu byli svdky.

it felt more like late summer than early autumn. The first race of the season was held in stunning weather: 25C

degrees, accompanied by sunshine and dust. Lot of dust. everybody was looking forward to the forthcoming race but there

were no surprises. Katie Compton and niels albert won the wom-ens and mens races respectively and with such ease that one would

have thought that this was just another Sunday training ride for them. The only surprise was Sven nys, who didnt finish the race;

racing throughout the mountain bike season had taken its toll.

Het voelde meer aan als nazomer dan als het begin van de herfst: de eerste wedstrijd van het seizoen werd gehouden met

fantastisch weer: 25 graden, zon en stof. Bergen stof. Iedereen had uitgekeken naar deze wedstrijd, maar er waren geen verrassingen: Katie Compton won bij de vrouwen, niels albert bij de mannen, beiden met zulk speels gemak dat je bijna zou kunnen denken dat dit een doodgewone zondagse trainingsessie was. De enige verras-

sing was Sven nys, die de wedstrijd niet uitreed: zijn deelname aan het mountainbikeseizoen had zijn tol geist.

The home of the famous pilsner beer welcomed the world cup circus with pretty ugly weather. The day of the race was as diverse

as it comes, sunshine then heavy rain followed by a light drizzle characterizing the elite mens race. This was one of two races

for the men only and so all eyes were on these elite cyclists and in particular, on Zdenk tybar who was looking for a win

on home soil. It wasnt his day, instead, Niels Albert turned out to be the strongest, again and Stybar had to f ight hard to make

it to the podium.

De geboortestad van het beroemde Pilsener bier verwelkomde het circus omtrent de Wereldbeker met behoorlijk slecht weer.

De dag van de wedstrijd was zo grillig als maar zijn kan: afwisselend zon, hoosbuien en motregen waren typerend voor de

wedstrijd van de beste mannen. Dit was een van de twee rondes waar alleen de mannen aan bod kwamen, dus alle aandacht was op hen gevestigd en dan met name op Zdenk tybar, die graag

wilde winnen op vaderlandse bodem. Helaas had hij zijn dag niet: wederom was het Niels Albert die aan het langste eind

trok. Stybar moest hard aan de bak om zich bij de eerste drie te kunnen scharen.
