Countless hours in mud, rain, snow and airports have preceded this book becoming real and tangible. It is not perfect but hope-fully will help to relive the magnificent events of the season – even if you were not there in person.

This book contains the fruit of a four month project and has transpired to record the events of the 2009/2010 UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup season as well as possible.

You have to admit, not strong selling points. as much as i have loved cycling for many years, cyclo-cross has to be the dark horse of the sport for me. i didn’t know much about it and to be honest, i had never really given it a second thought. it hadn’t sounded too enticing, with all the mud and the cold weather and the short, urban courses.

and then it all changed back in 2008, when I had the chance to see a cyclo-cross World Cup race live and boy, was it brilliant. It felt like the Formula-1 of cycling: you get to see the riders several times throughout the race; the pace is unbelievably intense and the crowd go crazy every time their favourite rider whizzes past. It was the beginning of a love affair between cyclo-cross and I. I would like to dedicate this book to these modern gladiators, who go out there week after week and keep fighting for points and prize money, no matter how bad the weather is or how hard the competition is. and though the season might end in February, they’ll be back as soon as the leaves start to fall. and we will all be there too, to witness the next exciting battle.

Ook al hield ik altijd al veel van fietsen, veldrijden was altijd een beetje een blinde vlek. ik wist er niet veel van en eerlijk gezegd kon het me ook niet bar veel schelen. Het klonk ook niet echt aanlokkelijk, met al die modder, het koude weer, korte stedelijke parcours – niet echt een goede reclame.

Maar alles veranderde in 2008, toen ik live een wedstrijd van het WK veldrijden mocht bijwo-nen: in één woord geweldig. Het voelde als de Formule 1 van het fietsen: je krijgt de rennersheel vaak te zien, ze razen met een gigantische snelheid over de baan en het publiek gaat

helemaal uit zijn dak als hun favoriete renner voorbij raast. Dit was het begin van een liefdes-relatie tussen het veldrijden en mij. Ik draag dit boek op aan de moderne gladiato-ren die elke week de arena betreden en blijven strijden voor punten en prijzengeld, ongeacht de soms erbarmelijke weersomstandigheden en de moordende concurrentie. en ook al loopt het seizoen in februari af, de renners zijn terug zodra de bladeren beginnen te vallen. en wij zullen er allemaal ook weer bij zijn, om getuige te zijn van het volgende spannende gevecht.

i když se mi cyklistika líbila, dlouhá léta mě cyklokros nijak obzvlášť nezajímal. moc jsem o něm nevěděl a abych řekl pravdu, nijak jsem se tím nezabýval. neznělo to nijak lákavě, s veškerým tím blátem a chladným počasím, krátké městské tratě, prostě je třeba si přiznat, že to není něco, co by se prodávalo snadno.

Vše se ale změnilo v roce 2008, kdy jsem měl šanci vidět živě Světový pohár v cyklokrosu a člověče, bylo to vynikající. Měl jsem pocit, že to byla Formule 1 v cyklistice: jezdce bylo vidět velmi často, rychlost byla neuvěřitelně intenzívní a dav šílel pokaždé, když okolo pro-svištěl oblíbený jezdec. Byl to začátek milostné-ho aféry - já a cyklokros. Chtěl bych tedy tuto knihu věnovat všem nmoderním gladiátorům, kteří týden za týdnem, jako opravdoví gladiá-toři, bojují o body a peněžitou výhru, bez ohle-du na to, jak špatné je počasí nebo jak je soutěž náročná. a i když sezóna končí na konci února, jakmile začne padat listí, budou zpět. a my také, abychom tomu byli svědky.

it felt more like late summer than early autumn. The first race of the season was held in stunning weather: 25C

degrees, accompanied by sunshine and dust. Lot of dust. everybody was looking forward to the forthcoming race but there

were no surprises. Katie Compton and niels albert won the wom-en’s and men’s races respectively and with such ease that one would

have thought that this was just another Sunday training ride for them. The only surprise was Sven nys, who didn’t finish the race;

racing throughout the mountain bike season had taken its toll.

Het voelde meer aan als nazomer dan als het begin van de herfst: de eerste wedstrijd van het seizoen werd gehouden met

fantastisch weer: 25 graden, zon en stof. Bergen stof. Iedereen had uitgekeken naar deze wedstrijd, maar er waren geen verrassingen: Katie Compton won bij de vrouwen, niels albert bij de mannen, beiden met zulk speels gemak dat je bijna zou kunnen denken dat dit een doodgewone zondagse trainingsessie was. De enige verras-

sing was Sven nys, die de wedstrijd niet uitreed: zijn deelname aan het mountainbikeseizoen had zijn tol geëist.

Člověk měl pocit spíše pozdního léta, než brzkého podzimu: první závod sezóny se uskutečnil v úžasném počasí: 25 stupňů,

svítící sluníčko a prach. Hodně prachu. Všichni se na blížící se závod velmi těšili, nedošlo při něm ale k žádnému překvapení: Katie Comptonová a niels albert zvítězili v závodě žen a závodě

mužů, vlastně vyhráli tak snadno, jako kdyby to pro ně byla jen jedna z tréninkových nedělních jízd. Jediným překvapením byl

Sven nys, který soutěž nedokončil: závodění po celou sezónu horských kol si vyžádalo svoji cenu.

The home of the famous pilsner beer welcomed the world cup circus with pretty ugly weather. The day of the race was as diverse

as it comes, sunshine then heavy rain followed by a light drizzle characterizing the elite men’s race. This was one of two races

for the men only and so all eyes were on these elite cyclists and in particular, on Zdeněk Štybar who was looking for a win

on home soil. It wasn’t his day, instead, Niels Albert turned out to be the strongest, again and Stybar had to f ight hard to make

it to the podium.

De geboortestad van het beroemde Pilsener bier verwelkomde het circus omtrent de Wereldbeker met behoorlijk slecht weer.

De dag van de wedstrijd was zo grillig als maar zijn kan: afwisselend zon, hoosbuien en motregen waren typerend voor de

wedstrijd van de beste mannen. Dit was een van de twee rondes waar alleen de mannen aan bod kwamen, dus alle aandacht was op hen gevestigd en dan met name op Zdeněk Štybar, die graag

wilde winnen op vaderlandse bodem. Helaas had hij zijn dag niet: wederom was het Niels Albert die aan het langste eind

trok. Stybar moest hard aan de bak om zich bij de eerste drie te kunnen scharen.

Domov slavného plzeňského piva uvítal závod Světového po-háru pěkně ošklivým počasím. Den závodu byl tak proměnlivý,

jak to jen bylo možné, a elitní závod mužů charakterizovalo svítící slunce, silný déšť i lehké mrholení. Byl to jeden ze dvou závodů,

kdy byl celý závod pouze jejich, takže veškerá pozornost bylasoustředěna na elitní muže a Zdeňka Štybara, který toužil po

vítězství na domácí půdě. Nebyl to však jeho den, tím nejsilnějším byl znovu Niels Albert, a Štybar musel tvrdě bojovat, aby se na

pódium dostal.

Not too far from the border between Switzerland, Germany and France, the third round was held. Another course situated by a lake, just like in Italy but you could not compare the weather. Though it didn’t rain on the day of the race, the mud made the otherwise not too tricky course quite challenging. Katherine Compton wanted to make sure that everybody took her seriously when she had said that she was going for the World Cup title this season and she did so by winning the race. The men’s race didn’t see a new winner either: even if only by millimetres, Niels Albert beat Zdeněk Štybar - again.

Niet ver van het drielandenpunt tussen Zwitserland, Duitsland en Frankrijk werd de derde wedstrijd gereden. Weer een par-cours aan een meer, net zoals in Italië, maar onder totaal andere weersomstandigheden. Al regende het niet op de dag van de wedstrijd, door de modder vormde het normaalgesproken niet al te lastige parcours een behoorlijke uitdaging. Toen Katherine Compton zei dat ze dit seizoen voor de wereldtitel ging, wilde ze dat iedereen haar serieus zou nemen, en ze ging dan ook met deze wedstrijd aan de haal. Bij de mannen was er ook geen nieuwe win-naar: al was het met luttele millimeters voorsprong, Niels Albert versloeg opnieuw Zdeněk Štybar.

Třetí kolo se uskutečnilo nedaleko trojité hranice Švýcarska, Německa a Francie. Další trať, která byla stejně jako v Itálii situována u jezera, nicméně počasí bylo naprosto nesrovnatelné. Ačkoli nepršelo v den závodu, bláto udělalo z jinak nepříliš obtížné trati trať náročnou. Katherine Comptonová chtěla, aby ji všichni brali vážně, když řekla, že v této sezóně chce získat titul Světového poháru. A tak se také stalo, když závod vyhrála. Ani závod mužů neviděl nového vítěze: i když jen o několik milimetrů, Niels Albert zvítězil nad Zdeňkem Štybářem – zase.

Since this year the rules don’t allow organisers to build sandtraps, we haven’t seen them much. However, due to Kok-sijde’s proximity to the sandy beaches, there was plenty of sand

here that hadn’t been artificially built into the course. After a fierce battle, Marianne Vos claimed her first win of the season, but Katherine Compton’s third place meant that no one was threaten-

ing her premier spot in the overall standings. In the men’s race, it wasn’t obvious who would win until the last few metres, when Zdeněk Štybar and Sven Nys went against each other - and this

time Štybar emerged as the winner. He closed the gap slightly in the overall rankings but Albert still had a decent lead.

Volgens de regels die vanaf dit jaar gelden, mogen de organisa-toren geen zandkuilen meer bouwen. Die hebben we de laatste tijd dan ook weinig aangetroffen. Vanwege de nabijheid van het strand was er echter zand in overvloed in Koksijde; hier hoefde niets kunstmatig te worden opgebouwd. Na een felle strijd eiste

Marianne Vos haar eerste titel van het seizoen op, maar Katherine Compton zorgde er met haar derde plaats voor dat niemand haar

eerste plek in het klassement in gevaar kon brengen. Bij de mannen werd pas op de laatste meters duidelijk wie er zou winnen, tijdens

een nek-aan-nekrace tussen Zdeněk Štybar en Sven Nys – dit keer kwam Štybar als winnaar uit de bus. Hij dichtte het gat in het

klassement enigszins, maar Albert had eerder al een comfortabele voorsprong opgebouwd.

Vzhledem k tomu, že od tohoto roku pravidla organizátorům nedovolují, aby budovali písková lože, už jsme je nikde neviděli.

Protože Koksijde je ale v blízkosti písčitých pláží, byla tam písku spousta a nebylo třeba je vytvářet uměle. Po krutém boji získala

Marianne Vosová své první vítězství v sezóně, ale třetí místo Katherine Comptonové znamenalo, že její první místo v celkovém

umístění nikdo neohrozil. V závodě mužů nebylo do posledních metrů jasné, kdo zvítězí, když spolu soupeřili Zdeněk Štybar

a Sven Nys - a tentokrát se vítězem stal Štybar. Zmírnil tak trochu svůj odstup v celkové klasifikaci, ale Albert měl slušný náskok.

Clay in Spain – summing up Igorre in three words. On a surprisingly warm December day, the elite men lined up on the start line to decide who was the fastest. A lead group of three, containing Niels Albert, Sven Nys and Zdeněk Štybar led the field, making it obvious to the rest of the pack that they would determine the winner amongst themselves. Then fate intervened in the form of a lapped rider who held up Albert and Nys - allowing Štybar to claim his second win of the season.

Gravel in Spanje – dat is Igorre in drie woorden. Op een verras-send warme decemberdag stonden de beste renners aan de start om te bepalen wie van hen de snelste was. Een kopgroep van drie mannen bestaande uit Niels Albert, Sven Nys en Zdeněk Štybar liet er geen twijfel over bestaan dat ze onderling zouden uitmaken wie de winnaar zou worden. Het lot hielp nog een handje mee met een gedubbelde renner waardoor Albert en Nys achterop raakten – zodat Štybar zijn tweede overwinning van het seizoen kon binnenslepen.

Hlína ve Španělsku – tak je možné Igorre shrnout ve třech slovech. V překvapivě teplý prosincový den se elitní muži postavili na startovací čáru, aby rozhodli o tom nejrychlejším. Vedoucí skupina tří mužů, skládající se z Nielse Alberta, Svena Nyse a Zdeňka Štybara, vedla závodní pole, z čeho bylo dalším jezdcům jasné, že o vítězi rozhodnou mezi sebou. Pak zasáhl osud v podobě předjetého jezdce, který Alberta a Nyse zpomalil – což Štybarovi umožnilo získat jeho druhé vítězství v sezóně.

While most in the Western world were preparing for Christmas, the best cyclo-cross riders gathered for the sixth round of the World Cup. The unusually heavy snowfall wreaked all sorts of havoc but one had to admit that it created a unique and beautiful backdrop for the race. We saw new faces on the top of the podium. Daphny Van Den Brand had had a balanced season thus far but this was her first World Cup win of the year and the same applied to Sven Nys, who made it clear that he’s still one of the best riders of the field.

Terwijl de meeste mensen in het Westen bezig waren met de voorbereidingen voor Kerstmis, kwamen de beste veldrijders bijeen voor de zesde ronde van het WK. De ongebruikelijk zware sneeuwval richtte heel wat schade aan, maar zorgde wel voor een unieke en prachtige achtergrond voor de wedstrijd. Er waren nieuwe gezichten te zien op het podium. Daphny Van Den Brand had tot nu toe een evenwichtig seizoen beleefd, maar dit was haar eerste winst voor de Wereldbeker dit jaar. Datzelfde gold voor Sven Nys, die er geen twijfel over liet bestaan dat hij nog steeds een van de beste veldrijders is.

Zatímco se většina lidí západního světa připravovala na Vánoce, nejlepší jezdci cyklokrosu se shromáždili k šestému kolu Světo-vého poháru. Neobvykle vydatné sněžení způsobilo velký zmatek, ale na druhou stranu vytvořilo jedinečnou a krásnou kulisu pro závod. Na pódiu jsme pak viděli nové tváře. Daphny Van Den Brandová měla dosud vyrovnanou sezónu, toto ale bylo její první vítězství v letošním Světovém poháru. To samé platilo pro Svena Nyse, který dal jednoznačně najevo, že je stále jedním z nejlepších jezdců pole.

Two days after Christmas and we were all back by the racecourse. Not only was the date special, the course was as well, as it was

intertwined with the famous Zolder race track. Traces of ice made it hard to get around but the sunshine made you forget all

of your troubles. It wasn’t overly surprising that Marianne Vos won and you could see the usual suspects on the podium around her: Daphny Van Den Brand and Katherine Compton. The real

surprise came when the men started: the icy course made the race completely unpredictable and at the end, Kevin Pauwels emerged

victorious. Zdeněk Štybar finished sixth; his chances for the overall title seemed less and less likely.

Twee dagen na Kerst stonden we alweer langs de piste. Niet alleen de datum was bijzonder, maar ook het parcours,

aangezien dit was verbonden met de beroemde wedstrijdbaan van Zolder. Restanten ijs maakten het moeilijk om vooruit te

komen, maar de zon deed alle zorgen snel vergeten. De winst van Marianne Vos kwam niet echt uit de lucht vallen en naast haar op

het podium kwamen we de gebruikelijke personen tegen: Daphny Van Den Brand en Katherine Compton. De echte verrassing viel

bij de heren: het ijzige parcours maakte de wedstrijd volkomen onvoorspelbaar en uiteindelijk zegevierde Kevin Pauwels. Zdeněk Štybar eindigde als zesde en zijn kansen op de titel leken verkeken.

Dva dny po Vánocích a my jsme byli všichni zpět na závodišti. Speciální bylo nejenom datum, ale i trať, protože byla propojená

se slavnou závodní tratí Zolder. Jízdu znesnadňovaly zbytky ledu, ale svítící slunce nechalo zapomenout na všechny problémy. Nebylo velkým překvapením, že zvítězila Marianne Vosová,

a kolem ní na pódiu byly ty obvyklé „podezřelé osoby”: Daphny Van Den Brandová a Katherine Comptonová. Opravdové

překvapení přišlo, když odstartovali muži: ledová trať učinila závod zcela nepředvídatelným a na konci se vítězem stal Kevin

Pauwels. Zdeněk Štybar skončil na šestém místě, jeho šance na celkový titul tak vypadala čím dál tím méně slibně.

The first World Cup of 2010 was held at a legendary venue: the Roubaix Velodrome. This was the day when the favourites fell from their pedestals. Katherine Compton didn’t start due to a leg cramp. Since her main rival for the title, Daphny Van Den Brand had finished all the races; she took over the overall leader’s jersey and made a big step towards the overall title. Men’s overall leader Niels Albert was pushed off his bike a week before dur-ing the National Championship race and he had broken his rib so his start was equally uncertain. It turned out that in this state, he wasn’t a match for the very motivated Zdeněk Štybar, who claimed his third win of the season and also got hold of the overall leader’s jersey. But the title was yet to be decided at the last race...

De eerste Wereldbekerwedstrijd van 2010 vond plaats op een legendari-sche locatie: Roubaix Velodrome. Dit was de dag dat alle favorieten van hun voetstuk vielen. Katherine Compton kon niet starten vanwege been-kramp. Aangezien haar belangrijkste rivale voor de titel, Daphny Van Den Brand, alle wedstrijden had uitgereden, nam zij de leiderstrui in het klas-sement over waarmee ze meteen ook dichter bij de eindtitel kwam. De leider in het klassement bij de heren, Niels Albert, was een week eerder van zijn fiets geduwd tijdens het NK, waarbij hij een rib had gebroken. Ook zijn prestatie was dus onzeker. In deze toestand bleek hij geen partij te zijn voor de zeer gemotiveerde Zdenek Stybar, die zijn derde zege van het seizoen behaalde en de leiderstrui in het klassement overnam. Maar de uiteindelijke winnaar van de titel zou pas bekend worden na de laatste wedstrijd...

První Světový pohár roku 2010 na legendárním místě: Roubaix Velodrome. Byl to den, kdy favorité spadli ze svých piedestalů. Katherine Comptonová se závodu nezúčastnila kvůli křeči v noze. Vzhledem k tomu, že její hlavní rivalka na titul Daphny Van Den Brandová dokončila veškeré závody, převzala tedy dres vedoucí závodnice a učinila vel-ký krok směrem k celkovému titulu. Celkový vedoucí závodník u mužů Niels Albert byl před týdnem sestrčen z kola a zlomil si žebro, takže jeho účast na závodech bylo stejně nejistá. Nebyl tak soupeřem pro velice motivovaného Zdeňka Štybara, který získal své třetí vítězství v sezóně a převzal dres vedou-cího závodníka. Ale o titulu se rozhodne během posledního závodu...

The much anticipated last race of the World Cup season was held at the venue of last year’s World Championships. The course was altered a little bit but all the tricky bits remained. Katherine Compton’s leg had cramped again one day before the race, so the job of chasing the overall title fell to Marianne Vos. She did her best and won the race, but Daphny Van Den Brand finished third and that was enough for her to win the overall title. The elite men’s start was as frantic as ever, but from the third lap, it all boiled down to Niels Albert vs. Zdeněk Štybar, with Kevin Pauwels on their tail. For Stybar to win the overall title, this was good enough; all he had to do was not to let Albert out of his sight. And he succeeded at doing so: though Albert won the race, Stybar clinched the overall title, his first ever overall World Cup title.

De langverwachte laatste wedstrijd van het Wereldbekerseizoen werd gereden op de locatie waar vorig jaar ook het WK werd gehouden. Het parcours was iets aangepast, maar alle lastige onderdelen zaten er nog steeds in. Katherine Compton had de dag voor de wedstrijd opnieuw last van beenkrampen, dus moest Marianne Vos de titel in de wacht gaan slepen. Ze deed haar best en won ook de wedstrijd, maar Daphny Van Den Brand eindigde als derde en dat was genoeg voor haar om met de uiteindelijke titel aan de haal te gaan. De start bij de heren was hectisch als altijd, maar na de derde ronde ging de eindzege alleen nog maar tussen Niels Albert en Zdeněk Štybar, met Kevin Pauwels in hun kielzog. Voor Stybar was dit voldoende om de titel te winnen, hij mocht alleen Albert niet al te ver laten uitlopen. En dit lukte hem: ook al won Albert de wedstrijd, Stybar pakte de titel, zijn eerste Wereldbekertitel ooit.

Natolik očekávaný poslední závod Světového poháru se uskutečnil na stej-ném místě, jako loňské Mistrovství světa. Trať byla trochu pozměněná, ale veškeré náročné části byly ponechány. Jeden den před závodem měla Kather-ine Comptonová opět křeč v noze, takže role bojovnice o celkový titul padla na Marianne Vosovou. Dělala, co mohla, a závod vyhrála, ale Daphny Van Den Brandová skončila na třetím místě, což jí k získání celkového titulu stačilo. Start elitních mužů byl tak zběsilý, jako vždy, ale od třetí etapy bylo vše na Nielsi Albertovi a Zdeňku Štybařovi, s Kevinem Pauwelsem v závěsu. Toto Štybařovi stačilo, aby vyhrál celkový titul, vše co musel udělat, bylo dávat pozor na Alberta, aby mu neuniknul z dohledu. A to se mu také pov-edlo: i když Albert závod vyhrál, Štybař potvrdil celkový titul, svůj první celkový titul Světového poháru vůbec.
