NADINE DEXTER is responsible for the successful start-up, planning, direction, and operation of all administrative and service functions of the Health Sciences Library. She is currently working with faculty and staff to create an environment that pro-motes growth, creativity and motivation throughout the College. She is also working on developing and applying technology tools for teaching, learning, assessment and outreach; as she is preparing for integrating library-training programs into the health sciences curricula and clinical environment. Nadine will also provide for the strategic use of knowledge resources and developing partnerships that support sources of external funding. Beginning in 2000 until her hiring at UCF in 2008, Dexter developed and imple-mented a plan for creating the newest medical library in the nation at Florida State University in Tallahassee. This task involved identifying both print and electronic resource providers for monographs, journals, databases and on-line journals that would fulfill the mission of the new College of Medicine. She also created a suc-cessful hiring plan for the library. In addition, Nadine developed, defined and imple-mented all medical library policies that affected collection development, patron us-age, database vendors and cataloging. She was also responsible for managing a $1.5 million budget for medical library development.

THE HARRIET F. GINSBURG HEALTH SCIENCES LIBRARY’S PUBLIC SERVICES DEPARTMENT is responsible for providing reference and instruction services to the faculty, students, and staff of the College of Medicine. HSL reference librarians also provide consumer health information to the general public.

In the 2013-2014 academic year the Public Services department began a series of lunch and learn work-shops for first year medical students, which complimented students’ Focused Individualized Research Experience (FIRE) projects. Workshops included introductions to PubMed and EndNote, and how to search the medical literature. The lunch and learn series was also part of the library’s new Personal Li-brarian Program, where all 120 first year medical students were assigned one of the six HSL faculty li-brarians to be their “go to” person for all things library-related, for their first two years of medical school. The program launched in August 2013.

The Public Services department is also responsible for library marketing and outreach, including plan-ning the library’s bi-annual HSL Info Expo, a lunchtime information session geared towards College of Medicine faculty and staff. Popcorn day, which occurs most Thursdays at 3pm, remains the library’s most popular outreach activity, and draws large crowds into the library each week. The Public Services librarians also assist the library team in writing and submitted abstracts for professional conferences. Some of this year’s highlights and accomplishments are listed below.

ACHIEVEMENTS

Much to the delight of faculty, students, and staff, the Electronic Resources Librarians successfully nego-tiated and licensed UpToDate. The process from start to finish was an arduous five months and required cross departmental collaboration with IT.

The Electronic Resources Librarians worked with FSU, FAMU, and FIU health sciences libraries to nego-tiate a deal with Mary Ann Liebert Publishers for access to their LEAP Journal Collection. This deal di-vided the cost amongst the libraries and gave access to the entire collection of Mary Ann Liebert jour-nals. The UCF Hitt Library benefits from this deal and has access to the collection as well.

The Electronic Resources Librarians, along with other library staff, gathered and evaluated medical mul-timedia resources from various medical school libraries to add to the Health Sciences Library website’s multimedia collection. This project resulted in a poster presented at the Southern Chapter Medical Li-brary Association Conference in 2013.

All existing resources were renewed. The Electronic Resources Librarians work with 38 vendors. They negotiated 16 license agreements for new and existing resources in 2013. The library website currently lists 526 e-books, 1,471 e-journals, and 110 databases/websites.

NEW ACQUISITIONS

In 2013, the Electronic Resources Librarians in the ELECTRONIC RESOURCES DEPARTMENT acquired the fol-lowing new databases, journals, and e-books for the Health Sciences Library.

UpToDate – An evidence-based clinical decision support resource authored by physicians to help healthcare practitioners make the best decisions at the point of care.

EMBASE – A highly versatile, multipurpose and up-to-date database covering the most important inter-national biomedical literature from 1947 to the present day.

Mary Ann Liebert Journal Collection – Peer-reviewed academic journals in the areas of biotechnology, biomedical research, life sciences, clinical medicine, alternative/integrative medicine, surgery, and law. This collection is shared with the UCF Hitt Library.

HIMSS eBook Collection – Focused on numerous topics in healthcare information technology and man-agement systems, HIMSS' publications help professionals keep on top of cutting edge technology and standards.

BrowZine – Combines individual articles from databases to create complete journals and arranges them in an intuitive newsstand, then delivers these journals to patrons in an easy to use format opti-mized for the iPad or Android tablet computers.

Acland's Video Atlas of Human Anatomy – Supports the teaching and learning of anatomy with more than 300 narrated videos of real cadaver specimens.

VisualDx – A clinical decision support system that helps clinicians recognize and diagnose visually pre-senting conditions. It captures the variation disease presentation by age, skin type, body location and severity, combining the best medical images in the world with a unique search engine to give you patient-specific answers in seconds.

INNOVATION AND CURIOSITY

The Electronic Resources Librarians discovered a new conference called Electronic Resources and Librar-ies that provides continuing education opportunities specifically for their field. Pamela Herring journeyed to Austin, TX to see if the conference was worthwhile. She came back with many ideas, one of which was CORAL, an open source electronic resources management system. The Electronic Resources Librarians are working with the Information Technology department to test this resource.

The Electronic Resources Librarians created an Excel spreadsheet that tracks the purchase history of all the resources they license. This spreadsheet has been helpful with planning the next fiscal year budget.

The Library Director, Library Services Coordinator, and Electronic Resources Librarians began meeting every week to discuss the budget. The results are a better understanding of the current status of the budg-et.

MARKETING AND OUTREACH

The library faculty held a lunch and learn session that present-ed UpToDate to College of Medicine faculty and students. The library faculty also traveled to Pegasus Health and presented UpToDate to the clinicians.

Pamela Herring presented BrowZine to Medical Education and Clinical Faculty at their monthly meetings.

The Electronic Resources Librarians tirelessly worked with Impelsys, a company located in India, to troubleshoot issues with their two e-book platforms: HIMSS E-Book Collection and Netter Reference Collection, which resulted in an improved platform interface for users.

THE INTERLIBRARY LOAN DEPARTMENT has seen some increased activity over the course of 2013. Most

of the article and book requests made by Health Sciences Library patrons occurred in Fall 2013, with

the majority of these requests falling in November. For Spring 2014, the majority of requests were made

in January. There has also been a notable increase in the number of books being requested by the Col-

lege of Medicine community this year. The ILL department has been able to borrow books primarily from

the John C. Hitt Library on the Main Campus of UCF, an interaction that has proven both beneficial and

convenient to our ILL operations.

Thanks to the efforts of the Electronic Resources Librarians, the department has been able to increase

its lendable holdings to include more peer-reviewed academic journals to share with academic medical

libraries across the country. A journal that was purchased primarily to support the research needs of our

Faculty and Volunteer Faculty members at the Burnett School of Biomedical Science, Phar-

macogenomics, has also become useful to other libraries we lend to this year, as the department saw

requests for articles in this journal arrive more frequently.

As the 2013-2014 school year comes to a close, ILL operations are poised to see another increase in

activity as we introduce more students in August, and research activities begin to gain speed within the

College.
