Ethics Flip Flop Fever! The UCCS Daniels Fund Ethics Initiative, College of Business and the Marketing Club teamed up to put together an Ethics Awareness campaign. Flip flops were distributed in early October, and students were asked to take pictures of their ethics’ flip flops in cool places to show where one can go with the College of Business and the Ethics Initiative. The winner of the photo contest will win a $100 gift card at the UCCS Bookstore.
The flip flops proved to be a big hit for the College of Business’ Facebook page, increasing the percentage of people engaged with the site 240% from the previous week. New Page Likes were up 233.3%!

Barney Rosenberg September 18

September was an exciting month for the Ethics Initiative beginning with speaker Barney Rosenberg, Vice President, Ethics and Business Conduct for Meggitt Group. Rosenberg brought his real life experience and ethics knowledge to his UCCS presentation and involved students with an ethics game that challenged their ethical decision making. Over 103 students, staff,
faculty and community members attended his lecture and classroom workshops. Guests enjoyed that Rosenberg gave them examples of real world ethical situations they might face in their careers and also gave insight into a global ethics perspective.
Luis Benitez October 9

Leadership speaker and successful mountaineer Luis Benitez talked to students about his multiple journeys to the summits of various Himalayan mountains. He demonstrated his ethical decision making process through his success and failures. Over 85 students attended Mr. Benitez’s public speech.
Eller College of Management Ethics Case Competition in Tucson, Arizona October 24

The UCCS Ethics Initiative sent two student competitors and two student observers (Kayla Ross and Chelsy Hodge) to The University of Arizona in late October for the Eller Case Competition. Hussain Albahrani and CJ Prue represented UCCS, presenting their recommendations for solving an ethical problem related to an employer
sponsored wellness program dilemma. CJ Prue stated that it was “an experience that I will never forget and was an invaluable opportunity.” UCCS Ethics Fellow Gordon Stringer, Senior Instructor of Finance was the attending faculty advisor to the UCCS Eller team.
The Psychology of Fraud with Toby Groves October 22

Toby Groves, researcher, consultant, and trainer brought his personal ethical bank fraud experience to UCCS. Attendees thought the most valuable aspect from his presentation was learning how easily someone could start down that slippery slope. 31 students and 20 faculty and community people attended this compelling event.

This year is the 100th anniversary of the Colorado Coalfield Strike and Ludlow Massacre of 1913-1914. The Ethics Initiative partnered with the College of Letters, Arts & Sciences to understand industrial healthcare and mining safety laws that now exist throughout the U.S. because of ethical issues that began from that event. Maria Montoya, an Associate Professor of History at NYU, guided listeners through the events and resulting outcomes. Students, faculty, and community members attended.
Dan Rooney October 19

The Daniels Fund Ethics Initiative co-sponsored Major Dan Rooney, founder of Folds of Honor, to share his story and motivate students and alumni at the 10 year anniversary of the UCCS PGA Golf Management Celebration. Major Rooney empowered audience members and provided a road map for positive change through promoting education for those whose lives were altered due to military service. The event had 125 attendees, including students, alumni, and community members.
Ethics Workshop for the Law Enforcement Field November 1

The School of Public Affairs Ethics Fellow Katy Cathcart hosted a workshop to enhance and expand the understanding of UCCS students in
the area of professional ethics when encountering dilemmas that come up specifically in the law enforcement field.

UCCS Ethics Case Competition November 15

This year’s case revolved around a business ethical problem. Each team was asked to identify the key stakeholders, as well as the financial, legal, and ethical considerations while finding a solution to the dilemma at hand. Presentations were 15 minutes long followed by an intense 5 minutes of Q&A from the judges. This year’s judges were Jackie Brookshire, Jane Dillion, John Duclos and Jariah Walker all from the Colorado Springs business community. 1st Place went to Benjamin Griffith and Jeremy McLinden, 2nd Place to Scott Griffee and CJ Prue, and 3rd Place to Jacob Lozow and Jennifer Scoville. Team recognitions were awarded to Austin Bell & Justin Miller, Alex Koehler & Laura Loosbrock and Emily Megee & Kale LoBosco. Participating teams are now eligible to be considered for one of the competitive slots on the UCCS inter-collegiate ethics case competition team.
The 2013 Ethics Essay Contest judging has begun!
This year’s ethical dilemma for the College of Business Daniels Fund Ethics Essay Contest discussed the ethical implications involved in selling violent video games. 45 papers were submitted by UCCS undergraduate and graduate students on November 15th. Results will be announced the week of December 9th. Prizes will be awarded to the best.
Student Center for Public Trust Chapter Events The UCCS chapter of the Student Center for the Public Trust (SCPT) provides an “interactive environment where ethical business behaviors and ideas can flourish, while creating opportunities for students to network with the business community and develop professional leadership skills.” Chapter membership is offered across all UCCS disciplines and colleges and provides a forum for ethics education and promote ethical thinking, while developing the character and conscience of all students. The student board of Erin Sparrow, Kayla Ross, Chelsy Hodge, and Scott Griffee direct and promote events and activities.
Additionally, the SCPT members accept responsibility for improving their community by completing a community service project each year.

Ethics Video Premiers October 30

Ready? Lights, camera, action! The Accounting Ethics and Institutions, and Business, Government and Law classes wrote and produced “Ethics in Action” videos showing their creativity and originality to educate viewers on the various aspects of leadership, ethics and business that are sure to provoke discussions. These videos are being considered for submission to the SCPT nationally sponsored 2014 “Ethics in Action” Video Competition. Does UCCS have the next prize winner?
Blue Star Recycling November 16

The students from the SCPT Chapter and the Chancellor’s Leadership Class volunteered for Blue Star’s 4th Annual Community Recycling Event. Students helped with everything from directing traffic and counting attendees to helping with material collection. Blue Star Recyclers is a local company with a mission to recycling electronics and other materials to create local jobs for people with autism and other disAbilities.
Student Evaluators work to bene-fit the Colorado Ethics In Busi-ness Alliance (CEBA) UCCS students has 14 teams evaluating nominees for the prestigious Bill Daniels Business Ethics Award and the Daniel L. Ritchie Award. Evaluators will spend about 20 hours in addition to doing site visits for their reports. Students will present their findings on December 2 to CEBA board directors. They are excited to be invited to attend the CEBA’s Annual Award Luncheon to meet the winners.
