It was part of an entire fortification system along Singapore’s north-eastern coast, from Changi to Pulau Tekong. It is a rare example of World War II relics here that have been preserved intact. Island facts Size: 1,020ha Once a cluster of five islets separated by tidal rivers, it has since become a single island with the building of bunds for prawn farming. The island’s rugged terrain is popular with mountain bikers. Much of the island has been shaped by granite mining and the cultivation of cash crops such as rubber, coffee, pineapple, coconut and jasmine in yesteryears. Chek Jawa Wetlands, a haven for one of Singapore’s richest ecosystems, is a must-visit. Residents rely on wells for water and diesel generators for electricity.
