Stage 1- Desired Results
Established Goals:SS5CG1- The student will explain how a citizen’s rights are protected under the U.S. Constitution.SS5CG2- The student will explain the process by which amendments to the U.S. Constitution are made.SS5CG3- The student will explain how amendments to the U.S. Constitution have maintained a representative democracy.
Understandings:Students will understand that…* Civil rights are the rights of citizens that are protected by the law, such as voting and fair treatment.* The creators of the Constitution knew that the Constitution would have to be changed in the future in order to protect all civil rights.* The difficulty of the amendment process keeps it from being overused and/or abused.* The amendments that were added to the Constitution were necessary to keep civil rights protected by the law.
Essential Questions:1. What are civil rights? Why are they important to protect?2. What is an amendment? What is the Bill of Rights?3. Why is it important to be able to change the Constitution? Is making it difficult to change a good thing?4. How have amendments helped to protect our rights and the representative democracy?
Students will know…*Bill of rights and other key amendments.*Steps of the amendment process.*Amendments supporting representative democracy.
Students will be able to…*Recognize and describe Bill of Rights and other key amendments and amendment process steps.*Use research skills (with guidance) to find out information about amendments.*Express findings via slide show and oral demonstration.
Stage 2- Assessment Evidence
Performance Task:*Create a power point and oral presentation, including self-chosen amendment, facts discovered about the amendment, picture(s) that represent the amendment, and explanation of how the amendment protects our civil rights/ representative democracy and why it is important.(Explanation, Interpretation, Application, Perspective, Empathy)
Other Evidence:*Oral or written response to each of the essential questions.(Explanation, Application, Interpretation, Perspective)*Amendment process graphic organizer.(Explanation, Application)*Create student booklet containing each of the discussed amendments, personal descriptions, and drawn illustrations about each.(Explanation, Interpretation, Perspective, Self-Knowledge)*Amendments matching cards in groups.(Application, Empathy, Self-Knowledge)*Test on the Bill of Rights, amendments, and amendment process.(Explanation, Application)
Stage 3- Learning Plan
Learning Activities:*Hook- “What do you believe are your rights as a student at this school?” List rights on chart paper or whiteboard.*Prior Knowledge- Ask students to each write personal definition of “civil rights” on paper. Then ask them to “look up” a definition (internet references, textbook, dictionary, etc.) “How is your definition different? How is the definition you found different than others?” Discuss.*Introduce Unit- Identify learning goals (GPS) for the unit. Answer any questions and discuss.*Review the instructions and scoring rubrics for power point presentation.*Show and listen to podcast “Protection of our Civil Rights”. *Read section covering civil rights and Bill of Rights in class textbook, Mastering the Georgia 5th Grade CRCT in Social Studies, pp. 109-114. *Follow-up- Students will answer essential questions #1 and #2 as “Ticket out the Door” activity.*Primary Source- Students will look at copy of U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights on computer projection screen to see Constitutional language of the amendments. Discuss how language is different and difficult to understand at times.*Student-paced work- Begin student “Amendments” booklet- Hand out papers/pages with headings of each of the first ten amendments. Students write amendment in own words and draw illustrations. Place in file folders with student’s name. Place on shelf for additional work times and further use in unit. *Show and listen to podcast “Constitutional Changes” (amendment process and key amendments).*Read section covering amendment process and key representative democracy amendments in
textbook, Mastering the Georgia 5th Grade CRCT in Social Studies, pp. 114-117. *Peer learning- Complete the “Amendment Process” graphic organizer in pairs using text, internet, podcast, etc.*Follow-up- Students will answer essential questions #3 and #4 as “Ticket out the Door” activity.*Review steps to create power point presentation via computer projection screen. (video tutorial) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWdFnMgGPKQ *Individual project- Begin rotations at computer stations for research and PowerPoint creation. Assist students as needed with research needs and PowerPoint.*Continue work on student booklet during computer rotations, adding the key representative democracy amendments. Students write amendment in own words and draw illustrations. Students will keep in folder until ready to publish.*Encourage students to review rubrics and review examples, and assist as needed during rotations. *Supply publishing materials (construction paper, art paper, hole-punch, brads, ribbon, etc.) and let complete books when ready. Have student turn in with *View PowerPoint presentations in class. Students will hand oral scripts in after presentation. *Group Work-Follow-up/Review- Amendments matching cards in groups for test review.
